X-Com Returns. Whimper
« on: April 14, 2010, 04:48:18 PM »
One of my favorite games is on its way back.... as a shooter.

Quote
XCOM re-imagined by 2K Marin for Xbox 360 and PC

In a surprise late night announcement, 2K Games has revealed that 2K Marin (responsible for BioShock 2) is working on a re-imagined version of XCOM. Like the first BioShock game, this "strategic" and "suspense-filled" first-person shooter will debut exclusively on Xbox 360 and PC.

Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K, addressed the switch to a first-person perspective in a press release: "Players will explore the world of XCOM from an immersive new perspective and experience firsthand the fear and tension of this gripping narrative ride."

According to the release, players will assume the role of an FBI agent "tasked with identifying and eliminating the growing threat" from an "unknown enemy." If the story stays true to the original franchise, expect aliens, global conflict, and lots and lots of dead, incinerated humans.

Whimper. Guys I played Enforcer. It wasn't really X-Com. But the Bioshock folks are doing it... Geez. Don't have it suck.

I think it could work, as long as it has the atmosphere of a Bioshock game.  The fact that Microsoft got it exclusive is pretty impressive though.

I think it's less Microsoft  influence and more "Bioshock 1 & 2 didn't do well on the PS3, so 2k seems to be giving up on transferring games developed on the PC over to Sony Land." And it seems to be 2k Australia developing it, which is the same crew that did Freedom Force. Which is a big plus for me. And hey! Screen shot!

Ooh. A distinct lack of browns. There's a plus.

That's one of the reasons I chose PS3 over 360...if it doesn't get ported to the PS3, it'll be out for PC 99% of the time, and I'll buy it for that.  But it seems like most of the games I would want to buy end up being ported over to PS3 anyway, just later on (Tales from Liberty City, Bioshock, Fallout 3 DLC), and considering I like to wait a majority of the time for prices to drop, it all works out.

Interesting take on XCOM, though...never really played the originals, but a friend of mine practically crapped himself when I told him how to get his old copy working in DOSBox so he could play it again.  Looked fun, but strategy games are not my forte (I still suck at SimCity, and that's a game you technically can't even lose at).  But, 1st Person Shooters seem to be what all the kids like these days...

Since we have a semi-related thread, I'll ask here:

Does anyone know a good resource for learning to play X-Com? This is one of the strategy greats that I never got in to when it was out and I decided it was time to get in on that.  I picked up the set on Steam and I'd like to start playing from the first one, but there's no decent tutorial, and I don't know where Steam links to the manual, if at all...

Apparently, a PDF of the first XCom Manual can be found here.

Okay, here's the E3 demo/walkthrough

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/nAmvP4w2ts0?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/nAmvP4w2ts0?version=3&amp;amp;hl=en_US</a>

And here's a quick impression of the comments on Youtube:

Except Noah was a tad more restrained.

No seriously. It's like 2k killed these people's dog. And then their sister. And the barista they had a crush on. And then Neil Gaiman, just because.

Look, I'm a huge fan or the original. But I'm getting a strong "No Mutants Allowed" vibe here from the comments. Am I a fan now? Not necessarily. My eyes were rolling pretty hard at certain comments in the narrative.  But at this point, while it isn't X-Com (nor thankfully is it Enforcer) it looks decent enough to keep paying attention to. However, if it were called "Invaders from beyond Time" I suspect most folks would be much happier.

And if all else fails, Xenonauts is still being worked on.

 :D :D I love Spoony.

The best part of his "betrayal" rant was Angry Joe's expression. It's priceless.

And the Firaxis (non-shooter) X-Com moves forward with a trailer and an October 9th release date.

I think that's the "Skills for kills, Agent" VO guy from Crackdown too.

And our friend from above chimes in with this:
