Borat! Coming to DVD March 6
« on: January 09, 2007, 08:23:52 AM »
Nice!!

According to Variety, the film will make it to DVD in its entirety, even though some lawsuits tried to stop it. So we get the full theater version.

I really did like this film, even though I thought I wouldn't. It's easy to like Borat, even though he does a lot of crazy things. In the context of the character, it all works well.

Yakshimash!

Is it just me, or is it going from theater to DVD 'quickly'?

The theater-to-DVD turnover rate has gotten faster for movies in general. Not sure if Borat is ahead of the curve on that tho.

It was widely released in October right? ( I remember it being around Halloween... but I have a terrible memory on such things) So, that's about 5 months or so.... and I think the norm is probably 6-8 months, so yea.. a little early. Hey, if they can squeak it out ahead of the lawsuits, all the better!

I wonder how much deleted stuff there'll be.  I can imagine there'll be an "in-character" commentary too.  Looking forward to it.   :)

I'm surprised they wait even that long to release it.

The old theory:  Spread out the release of the film so it can milk each market for everything its got.  Give it time in theatrical, foreign, pay per view, dvd, cable, then broadcast.  If you release them too close together then people will only watch it in one place and it won't make as much money.

The new theory:  Release them all close together.  This way you only have to pay for advertising one or two times so you can blow it all in a huge advertising blitz, then you ride all the hype into dvd sales.  There was so much hype around Borat that I think it would have killed in DVD sales had it released a little earlier.  Now it's pretty much gone and they will have to shell out for a new campaign.

The etiquette woman is also suing and she has more of a case because she had them sign a contract that said they can't make her look bad or defame her and stuff. The frat boys case was thrown out by the judge.

Really?  I heard the producer took the frat boys to a bar and got them drunk before they signed their release, which was the grounds of their lawsuit.  It's interesting that they threw it out.

I don't think he made the Etiquette woman look dumb, it's just that she was afraid her reputation was ruined because of the movie, but Cohen had no intention of actually following the advice of the Etiquette instructor, as you will see in the film. It's all about funny, and seeing Cohen totally destroy the situation during the dinner scene is hilarious!

I'm very curious to see Borat, but I had the feeling I didn't want to sit through it at the theatre, so I'm looking forward to the DVD. Sometimes dumb comedies are tough to swallow surrounded by dumb people. But I got the sampler disc that was floating around with the opening scene in "Kazakstan" and a few deleted scenes, and enjoyed that. An audio commentary by Borat would be pretty sweet. I hope they do it.

Did anyone read the interview with Sasha Baron Cohen in Rolling Stone? Quite the interesting guy.

I saw this on my birthday with my grandma! We both thought it was hilarious.

There's also a guy suing them because apparently Cohen accosted him in a men's room and stared at him. They didn't put the scene in the movie but I guess it's been on TV and that it's on the web.
