see I think it's simply that in books and such it's more exciting if someone is Forbidden, and saying "i'm a murderer", but knowing he's truly good, but he's still forbidden makes it exciting. But I'm with you. In three months or a year or whatever, exciting will wear off, then what will you talk about?

And I think there's plently more wrong with this romance that just that. But there isn't enough time on earth to go into it.  :)

But the "forbidden" factor totally fails, because nobody is doing any forbidding. Every single character except the token irrelevant antagonistic member of the Cullens approves of the match, and despite the token "it's too dangerous for you to be with me" comments, Edward doesn't really resist the relationship either.

But he is. He killed people back when he first became a vampire.

So that makes it all even worse.

I thought the movie made it clear that he never did that, on account of the other cullens keeping him in check?

Huh.  Well.....the movie may not have mentioned it, but, the books did.  I think he grew up vegetarian after he was turned, but, about 10 years into the relationship with Carlisle, he decided to become rebellious.  He killed people, but, they were bad people, a la ., Nick of Forever Night, and....the Vampire in Moonlight.  ...That may come out in movie 2 or 3....

I think this thread makes a clear case for GOOD screenwriting and directing, or at least thinking through things. Teenagers pick these things up subliminally, so people should be a little more careful. But I know I'm asking too much to expect good writing in a teen angst movie.

Edward at one point goes through bratty vampire puberty and goes off and kills a few humans.  But then he regrets it and really embraces the angsty teenager next to him inside himself and gets all depressed. (ok i may have embellished a little)

But I am inclined to agree with the thoughts from Fuzzy and Queen.

Meyers has a warped sense of what love should be, and writes it that way. She tries to imbue Edward with this bad boy image and the image of a turn of the century gentleman. She injects religiosity into her work in odd places that i feel hinders more than develops the characters as well as the "love" story. She turns it into something more along the lines of a relationship based on control and obsession.

I can't help thinking of this quote from MST3K's "The Mole People"

ADELE: Royal food is not for servants
JOHN: Haven't I told you that you're not a servant?
CROW: Now go get me a beer!
ADELE: Yes, my Lord.
JOHN: And what else have I told you?
SERVO: That you follow me for my own protection?
