What's that called?
« on: April 29, 2009, 06:04:40 AM »
I started another thread in the movie section when I couldn't remember the name of a movie, and someone knew it almost right away.  So I thought I'd do it again for this old cartoon I used to watch as a kid which, for the life of me, I can't remember the name of.

All I can remember about it is that it's a Japanese product in the mold of, say, a Robotech or a Voltron or something like that, and it's about a crew of people that fly through space on this big red and grey ship that kind of looks like a giant red and grey submarine.  And I think the whole front of the ship was a big gun that they made a big deal out of firing.

Okay TV experts, given only that vague and maybe even incorrect recollection, what was that cartoon called?

Sounds like Star Blazers.

The only thing I remember about it is the groovy theme song:

Absolutely, positively, 100% certain, Regis-that's-my-final-answer, Star Blazers.  Only it's a giant red and gray battleship, not a submarine.  And that weapon is the Wave Motion Gun.  It shoots through stars.  Bow down before the mighty Wave Motion Gun.

Yeah, I was a kid at the right time.

Thanks Monty, that's the one!  I also think it was the groovy theme song that sold me.

Yes, Scrivener, a giant battleship, not a submarine.  I was close.

Funny that I would like yet another TV show with a theme song which explained that show's entire premise...

IMDb has a freakishly resourceful thread called "Need To Know."  There are so many people on that thread, it's like the best customer service a movie-lover could want... with the exceptional turdface here or there.  Anyway, I've never been disappointed by it before, no matter how obscure, even with the smallest of info.  Check it out here:  http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000001/flat/136752094

(Unfortunately, as the thread gains popularity, it becomes more of a place for people to ask the simplest questions that a simple Google search will answer; so an obscure movie question will be a breath of fresh air).

Thanks for that tip, I'll remember that one for what I'm sure will be my many future memory lapses.

And that weapon is the Wave Motion Gun.  It shoots through stars schools.

Don't needlessly explain my tangential pop-culture references, gbeenie.

Oh, and did you know your screen name is not an adverb?

I thought your Johnny Dangerously reference was accidental. My apologies.

What was that one movie, where the people were flying around in a plane, and there were a bunch of snakes on it?  Samuel L. Jackson was in it.

Also, did you guys ever see that old science fiction series starring William Shatner about all those astronauts on a trek through the stars?  What was that one called?

Apology accepted.  No harm done.  Except perhaps to Joe Piscopo.
