Are Gamefly downloads worth doing or is is best just to wait until they are on sale on Steam?

Very painless to do. Sign up for an account. Buy on the Gamefly website. Download via a separate program which doesn't need to be running any other time except when you D/l. The service (which used to be Direct2drive) has been around since 2004 and has been one of Steam's biggest competitors until last year when GF bought them. And Gamefly is pretty big themselves. Unlimited downloads, the programs themselves use whatever DRM that they originally shipped with. About the only thing you'll be missing over Steam is the automatic inclusion in your games list, automatic patch updates (although most of these are already patched to the extent that they'll be patched) and Steam achieves.

Not a HUGE savings, but I feel like mentioning that Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, AKA the best Indiana Jones games ever, AKA one of the best adventure games ever, is a mere $2.50 on Steam for the next 4.5 hours instead of the ususal $5.

Want the Lego Batman 2 Villains DLC but didn't preorder from Gamestop? Well, two ways to get it:

1) Go to Canada. Apparently all of their copies came with both the heroes and Villains DLC. Jerks.
2) Are you a member of Gamestop Power-up Rewards? You can buy them via the "New Items" tab (2nd page) for 2000 points, which IIRC, means that you've spent $20 at Gamestop.

The summer sales are starting to heat up. Gamefly's just ended and now Amazon's offering theirs:

4th Of July Sale - Buy One, Get One Free

Pretty eclectic list of stuff being offered there.

And current rumors state that a certain sale from a certain company named after heated gases starts a week from today.

Megaman X2 on the Wii's virtual Console for 8 dollars. Sure, doesn't seem like a bargain until you see how much it goes for on Ebay.... usually 5x as much.

Amazon Gold Box event for VG all day Tuesday. (And a certain download site's sale is threatened to begin on Thursday.)

Wouldn't it be funny if Steam was just laughing and watching everyone roll out their rediculously low sales, and then waited until late July to roll out theirs? :^)

New Indie Bundle!

http://www.indieroyale.com/

6 games, though I really only bought it for Serious Sam 2 HD.  The others are a bonus.

Amazon has another PC Download sale sunning through the end of the month: Amazon Sale

The obscenely good value Paradox bundle is back as is a 2k Mega Pack with:
Bioshock 1 & 2, Borderlands GOTY, Civ City Rome, Duke Nukem Forever, Civ V GOTY, Civ IV Complete, Mafia II, Stronghold Collection all for $39.99

Yes, you might be able to buy all those titles on Steam for a lower price over a period of a few months, maybe,  but it's a heck of a value for that price.
