So, I'm in Birmingham, AL. On Tuesday, the whole city shut down. A "dusting" was predicted. 2" of snow (and a LOT of ice) came. Schools were let out and parents went to retrieve their kids. All the major roads became parking lots. The sandtrucks couldn't get through. People spent the night in schools, Wal-Mart, any place they could get warm. A lot spent the night in their cars.
I got stuck at work. Fortunately, I work right next to a hotel with a joining Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. I work at a small (but thriving) company, so the owner bought us stranded ones lunches, dinners, and rooms for the following two days. I spent one night in the hotel and, on Wed, walked 5 miles back home (half that trip was a running trail leading directly home). It was like Cormac McCarthy's The Road. SO many abandoned/wrecked cars. After 90mins, I made it home safely to my wife. Spent another day at home Thursday. Cleaned around the house and watched Wolf of Wall Street (or what I'm calling it, "Quentin Tarantino's Gordon Gecko Extravaganza"). Today, roads are mostly clear and temps are back to above-freezing, so I'm back at work. SO close to a 6 day weekend, but Fridays are our slowest days. All is good for stansimpson.
