The Riff That Got Away...
« on: December 21, 2008, 10:17:13 PM »
OK... the rules for this are straightforward... but I'll try to muddy them up as much as I can.  ;)

You were listening to a RiffTrax, or a 'Mike-era' MST3K (leaving the Joel-era ones for this game on Cinematic Titanic if so desired).  You heard an opening for a riff and...  nothing.  You knew INSTANTLY that the thought in your head was a prized gem that MUST have somehow been accidentally erased from the soundtrack, because the guys COULDN'T have missed it.

So: what is it?

Describe first the scene, and - if your riff builds on a riff that was actually said by Mike, Kevin or Bill (or a guest riffer) - include that as well.

I'll start...

In MST3K # 1009, Hamlet.

Hamlet is arguing with his mother in her room.  Just after Hamlet stabs Ophelia's father through the curtain (before Hamlet finds out who it was)...

MissedRiff:   "Oooh... looks like Hamlet'll be arrested for Pelonious Assault!"

EDIT:  There is a great thread that is for films and TV shows (and whatever else)... pretty much anything that isn't covered by the 'rules' for this thread.  Lonesock started it and its here: http://forum.rifftrax.com/index.php/topic,18101.0.html

In the Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Rifftrax there was one joke I thought of in the theater, and when I got home looked up the details I needed for it.  I can't remember off the top of my head what joke WAS in this spot, but it wasn't this one.

In the wedding scene, as the camera cuts to John Hurt as Professor Oxley.

Oxley:  How much of human life is lost in waiting?

Missed Riff:  Lets see, Last Crusade was out on May 24th 1989, so I'd guess eighteen years and three hundred sixty three days.

The bizarre absence of Goyle (or is it Crabbe) in Prisoner of Azkaban, replaced by some skinny kid (I only just noticed it). Well, too nerdy maybe, but if they don't point it out, who will?

The incredibly dangerous Scottish terrain of Hogwarts. I'm sure dozens of students are killed every day going to Magical Creatures 101.

And ANYTIME after the introduction of the blue chicks?

Pretty good. But for a joke like that you should add the inevitable slapping or some other retribution by one or both of the other riffers.

In the Star Wars IV Rifftrax, I saw a missed oportunity. When they are cleaning up the dead Jawas outside their big sand crawler vehicle, C3PO is carrying a dead Jawa and throws him onto the burning pile. They should have riffed "I'm not dead! I'm getting better-AAAHH!"

There was one in 300 that I recall - it's where the Spartans enter the village that's been completely decimated by the invading army and it pans to a shot of those dead people hanging in a trees' branches.

My riff would've been: "Literally: A family tree."

I could've gone a little further too, by wondering what kind of fruit that the tree would bear...

Nice Python 'running joke' riff!

I've realized that - being a noob here when I started this thread - that I actually put it in the wrong place.  So I DO hope people continue to add their 'missed riffs', but please put them in the new spot:  The New Spot

From a reviewing of "Next"...

Jessica Biel has invited Nicolas Cage into the motel room, and they start kissing.  Cut away to scenery.

Bridget says:   "A helicopter flying in the Grand Canyon?!?  What's that supposed to symbolize?"

MissedRiff:   "Ahem...  honey, a little tiny tube flying around in a huge canyon?  Not exactly sure that's what either Cage or Biel would've wanted for symbolism."

= = = = =

Just watched The Riffed Matrix again last night...  so here we go.  These are all building on the riffs Mike and Kevin already said:

= =

After Neo is 'flushed' from his pod and the clamp is coming out of the ship to grab him, Mike says "I've played that game a number of times and I've never caught an actor."  That line getting out by the time the claw is reeling Neo into the ship.

Kevin could have said: "Mike: neither has he."

= =

When the squiddy is first after them, and they pull into the large open area of the tubes, Kevin says, "There's H.R. Giger's rumpus room!"

Shortly there's a close-up of Neo.  Either of them could've said, "...and, appropriately, there's H.R. Giger's rumpus."

= =

When they are eating their meal of white mush, Kevin goes into a long spiel about his college roommate talking about the Smurfs being communist.

Mike could've said: "Uh... Kevin?  That was me."

To which Kevin could've said (somewhat hesitatingly):  "Ohhhh... yeah... that was a great theory; I... I fully agree!"

= =

And finally, when the Smith is fighting Neo in the subway, and they are on the tracks, the Smith calls him 'Mr. Anderson' and he says, "my name is Neo"

Then Mike says: "-sporin"

This could have continued with:  "-politan",  "-synephrine",  "-conservative"

Sorry... I'd originally thought that a different area of the Forum would be more appropriate for these (and re-started the thread there).  But recently realized that the area I'd linked to was actually moreso for people to discuss releases of their full iRiffs and such.  So... back to here as this is where people add their creativity in short text blurbs.

Just watched The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers again last night, and thought a slight change of one line and an additional one would be good.

The line was when the tree people were attacking the tower, and one tree was on fire, it dunked its head into the water after the dam was broken.  Mike said something about no-one paying attention to his Richard Pryor impression.

Change that to:  "Here's my Richard Pryor impression."

New Riff:  "Well: I guess that's Ent...ertainment!"
