Descent 4?
« on: October 28, 2008, 07:51:37 PM »
http://www.custompc.co.uk/news/602400/interplay-back-in-action--descent-sequel-on-the-way.html

Well, it appears that Interplay has risen from the dead.  The sale of the rights to the Fallout franchise have given them some capital, and another sequel to one of my favorite games of all time seems to be on the horizon.

I hope to God this is true.  Descent was one of the first games I ever played - and THE first FPS I ever played, so it holds a lot of sentimental value for me. But it also holds up damn well on its own. An entirely unique FPS with six degrees of freedom - you can fly around in ANY direction, and pitch, yaw, and roll.  There was nothing like it back then, and there's nothing like it today.  The formula was a real winner - you fly around, shoot at robots, rescue hostages, blow the reactor, and get the hell out of there. What's not to like? It had a wonderful claustrophobic feel that really caught my eight-year-old imagination (even though I couldn't beat it without cheating 'til I was ten). And the final boss was insanely hard. Er, at least it was back when I played it. In any case, I got a real sense of achievement when I beat him.

I would sell my body to buy Descent 4 if I had to.  Assuming it's actually coming.  I sure hope it is.

The problem I had with Descent back in the day was that it was really, really, confusing.  The blotchy, brown graphics made me lose my bearings practically all the time.  Modern graphics could do wonders for the game, though.  (My first FPS was Wolfenstein 3d).

Well, I LIKED being disoriented.  I liked flying into rooms upside-down or sideways.  The Q and E keys were my friends.  I didn't care that the only colors were gray, dark gray, brown, explosion, and laser beam.  I got to fly around shooting ROBOTS.  Fuck yeah!

EDIT:  I was wrong about the colors.  There's also metallic red, metallic green, and metallic purple.

I like the idea of Descent on a next gen console.  They could really go nuts with the level design.  But with it being little more than a glimmer in the eyes of a developer, I'm not holding my breath just yet.

Seriously, though.  If this doesn't happen I may stick my head into a hot fusion reactor while a bunch of Medium Lifters tear me apart before the whole joint explodes.

Or maybe just an oven.  Either one would be fine.

And they'd better not make it insanely easy just to please the console kiddies.

I was bieng threated with death by wolf raping before it was cool!.
