And now, on with the countdown.

« on: November 03, 2009, 05:32:52 PM »

Since it's November, and Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away, I've been looking forward to one thing:

Black Friday.

What are you looking for? Where will you go? Know any good places to look?

Me, I've got a hundred bucks saved to blow at Amazon.  Beats fighting the crowds, but they had some amazing DVD deals last year.

Im,

I'll be posting the BF stuff like I did last year, but the biggies in the media world haven't been leaked yet, just stuff from Office Max and the like.

However,Amazon's a great choice to watch since last year they matched almost every BF special from Target, Best Buy, Circuit City and even Walmart, IIRC.  I think the only specials that I wasn't able to get from them was a portable DVD player and a Lego Star Wars Star Destroyer that Target was selling. But DVDs and games? Those got ordered at 12:01 Amazon time with no problems at all.

But hey, the K-Mart DVDs just got leaked. Here they are:
$3.99
Hellboy II
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Semi-Pro
Oceans 12
Pursuit of Happyness
Devil Wears Prada
21
We Own the Night
Blades of Glory
The Mist
Kentucky Fried Movie
Beethoven's Big
Walk Hard
Mr Woodcock
"over 50 titles to choose from"

$5.99
Dark Knight
Wanted
Pineapple Express
Role Models
Journey to the Center of the Earth
Barbie - Diamond Castle
Mr & Mrs Smith
Live Free or Die Hard
Bucket List
Death Race
Soul Men
"additional titles available in-store"

$8.99
Taken
Fast & Furious
Paul Blart Mall Cop
Coraline
Kung Fu Panda
17 Again
Marley & Me
Madea Goes to Jail
V for Vendetta BLU
Constantine BLU
Corpse Bride BLU
Wedding Crashers BLU

Looks like Sears is going to offer its BF specials online on Thanksgiving Day, as well.

Sorry dude, didn't mean to steal your thunder with the Deals Thread--I did see it. I figured this could also be a discussion thread for it all.

Awesome list there though.  Kung Fu Panda looks pretty great in Blu, haven't seen the others that way.  And I might get Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

No worries. I'm just letting you know that most of the lists haven't gotten leaked yet. Sears, K-Mart , Office Max, Harbor Freight and part of Toys R Us' ads are the only major ads in the wild right now.

Side note: Panda's in standard def at that price, not Blu-y.

Ah, crap.

Still, Forgetting Sarah Marshall was the funniest movie of 2008, hands down.

What's Black Friday?  Is that a memorial to some kind of historical tragedy?

It's slang for the day after Thanksgiving, which for our non-American readers, is always held on a Thursday. For the past 40 years or so, the Friday after Thanksgiving has been one of  the biggest shopping days of the year.

It's called Black Friday because people who deal with the public (salesclerks, bus drivers, cops etc.) generally really dislike this day as it starts very early, ends very late, is very, very hectic and the throngs of shoppers go rather insane and tend to be more unpleasant to deal with than normal.

I've also heard that they call it black Friday because it puts retailers "in the black" for the year, as opposed to the red, since it opens the holiday shopping season.
