Title: Cathy Is DRM-free!!!
Post by: Teaflax on March 07, 2008, 12:53:21 PM
Here I was, just about ready to hit the purchase button, when I realized that this was not another DRM-free file.

What gives? Was the experiment a failure? Is this a control test?

Hmph. I was all excited about watching this on my PSP tonight...

Also, the mp3 is provided, in case you want to sync it up yourself.

I noticed that a pirated version appeared quickly on a certain type of file posting protocol.  But that's no different from any rifftrax release.

I guess sales must have been down as well.   Bummer. :-\

Who pirated it, and what does he value so that I can destroy it before his eyes?

Unfortunately, that is inevitable.

But if you can PM me in the direction of the torrent, I can ban the user that bought it.

Can someone find the guilty party and send them my way?

Downloading the file within Divx takes me about 12 tries to get a complete download.   It will download 7%, then fail.   another 5%, then another failure.   Still only at 53%.........

Really? I can say I've never had a problem downloading from them.. strange..

And there were no issues with the short we released last week, right? Maybe DivX is having some tech issues.

So the answer is no more DRM free?

I was so excited to be able to watch this on my iPhone.

I had only previously purchased one riff trax and it was such a pain in the ass to synch that I didn't bother doing it again until the DIVXX came out, which was even more of a pain in the ass, and I never got it to work right on my Mac.

The DRM free short was awesome.  Took about 10 seconds to get into iTunes and on my iPhone.

Seriously, don't stop doing DRM free versions.  It's costing sales by NOT doing them.

If piracy is keeping us from DRM free stuff there is only one solution.

Darn it!

I loved that the last track was DRM free because I hate being tied to my laptop to watch it and the entire DIVX thing is a pain anyway.

I quit downloading the shorts until the last one. But that one I had downloaded and on my iPod in minutes and was able to enjoy anytime without it seeming like a chore to watch.

I was very excited about there being a new release until I got to the store and was just about to hit purchase when I saw things were back to DRM.

Boo on RiffTrax for teasing me so.

I also haven't used the automatic syncing RiffTrax player. I would much rather watch the movie on my nice, big TV and hit a couple buttons on my iPod to listen to the riffs. I keep them all in an automatically generated playlist. It's a breeze.

Please bring back the DRM free shorts!

It's always good to get feedback. I mean, polite constructive feedback anyway. And what's interesting is that this issue brought a few new people out of the woodwork to comment. There are quite a few posts in this thread from forum members that don't post a lot, and even some brand new forum members. Which means that they took the time to join just to comment on the DRM issue.

I'm sure the guys at Rifftrax get the point. God... by now they probably hear people bitching about DRM in their sleep. But customer feedback is still important. And as long as people keep their cool, i don't mind how how many times they repeat themselves. It's easy enough for me to skip this thread anyway!

With this whole DivX thing, I thought yay I can watch them on my fancy DivX player, so I can burn Divx discs, but alas it tells me I dont have authorization when I put it in my player. wtf! I have no idea how to get around that. Especially since I obviously have authorization, being I bought the damn thing. Sorry kind of angers me.

You have to first, burn an authorization DVD (which has your DVD player code in it) on your DVD, then you can play your Divx shorts

Yeah, chalk up another "I was just about to buy it, but saw it wasn't DRM free and didn't" for me.

For the Rifftrax overlords... once you put the shorts out DRM free, I will gladly hand over my money for the ones I haven't purchased.  (I haven't "pirated" them either)

It took the music industry a while to understand that DRM doesn't do anything to limit illegal copying.  And once you free up the DRMed filed I will gladly be there with bells on.

I completely understand the reason for not offering that on movies you don't have the rights to, but your DVD player is a GREAT solution.

For other riffs that you do that are public domain, I am going to vote with my wallet and not purchase any until they are DRM free and easy for me to transfer to the player medium of my choice (iPod, Laptop, iPhone, PSP, etc.)

By putting the DRM on the files, you are only inconveniencing your loyal law abiding fans.  I have the technical means and aptitude to sync them up myself, but sometimes it just isn't worth my time and effort.  It is a shame when the easiest/most efficient method to get media you want (and are Willing To Pay For (or Have Paid For)) is to find the "cracked" version.

Again, it is a lesson the music industry has finally learned, and it is a lesson the Movie industry is also learning now.

As near as I can tell, I have purchased EVERY movie riff you have done, I just draw the line at the DRMed riffs of Public Domain files.

Please continue to do great work on the public "shorts", and when they are DRM free I will gladly return with my wallet in hand.

Businesses seem to learn no other way.

Ditto to the ditto.

Yeah, I know this attitude is selfish...in regards to the folks who re-author. Sorry 'bout that, but so far this hasn't affected me because we get the MP3 given to us.

I remember when RiffTrax first announced they were going to release the shorts on DivX. Everyone thought "wicked, we can get the video and audio mixed into one and it will be easy to watch". I also think that folks thought it would just be an avi file encoded with the DivX codec...not the DRM .divx file that only plays in the DivX player.
Anyways, I'm not going to  :deadhorse: ...I know they know how I feel about the subject.

Title: Re: Why isn't Cathy DRM-free?

Yeah, it's usually buried somewhere in the setup menu. I was able to find it on my Toshiba under a miscellaneous player setup menu.
Title: Re: Why isn't Cathy DRM-free?
Post by: Quicksilver on March 09, 2008, 01:54:25 PM
I just got it all setup. You know I had to put a VOD divx containing disk in to get the player to reveal its product activation ID. That's just stupid. So it assumes you dont know what you're doing and only lets you see the code once you try to play a VOD file, even then it's still buried in setup menus.

None the less, it's actually quite amazing, I put all my shorts and movies from VOD on one disk, with tons and tons of room to spare. Pretty cool.

Oh and the picture quality is top notch, not bad for $40.

Huh, my DVD player didn't require that. Obviously it varies by manufacturer how their setup procedure works (and they should really document it in their instructions better).

Glad you got it working, though.

I feel like I'm doing the no-drm people injustice, by liking the product, but I'll tell what, burning a divx cd was easier than making toast. Drag, drop and burn, right from the divx player.

I'm neither pro or anti divx at this point.  It is so easy to reauthor my own shorts, that as long as they keep giving us the .mp3's I have no complaints.

This will be the first Rifftrax I won't buy, at least until my situation changes anyway.

I am only online at work, where they have some kind of block in place to stop me connecting to Divx.

I've bought all of the other shorts anyway, with the plan to watch them as I usually do (I don't and can't re-author my dvds) and since this one's a double, but with only one MP3, I am finally saying, no guys, that is too much of a pain in the ass to deal with.

Yes, I remember reading that when setting up my account, I don't remember the number either but 10 sounds right...

Do the Divx certified players erase the authorization CD-R you have to make?  I guess it would have to or else there's no way they could limit the devices since you could reuse the CD.  Or maybe the limit is only for computers?

There would be fewer complaints if they followed the iTunes model, computers can be authorized and deauthorized and will play without needing a live internet connection, and you can own as many players as you want, although the 5 computer limit on iTunes is kind of low....

Would be nice to have these on iTunes, but Apple sets all the prices on iTunes so they would cost more (if a big company like NBC/Universal couldn't set their own prices I doubt Rifftrax could)....

I'll leave off the rest of the standard DRM rant, for the sake of space and time.  I'm sure you can read it anywhere else anyway.

Hmm, the top guys we're in contact with over there haven't mentioned doing this anytime soon. Is there something you know that we don't?

Also, as I mentioned earlier (perhaps in another thread) they are working on an update to the authorization that doesn't require a live internet connection, but the timetable is a little long for it.

One problem I had with iTunes' DRM on some music I bought was that I had all these songs that were authorized through an email address that I got through my cell phone provider.  My cell phone provider stopped offering that email address and abruptly cut off all use of the email address.  Then I switched computers, and iTunes wanted me to authorize the new computer to play these DRM music files.  I couldn't authorize them because I couldn't remember the password I used on that email account, so I couldn't verify my email address, so I couldn't authorize the computer to play the music.  Talk about a clusterfuck.

Then I try talking to Apple about it, and I wait on hold or don't get a response to my emails.  Rifftrax is great because they are small and are directly available to you if you have problems.

There are other reasons I hate DRM, but not being able to play what you purchased because you have to jump through 8,000 hoops is mostly why I hate DRM.

You're not alone, my myspace page and my xbox live internet account were tied to an old college e-mail that got taken away at a random point. So my freaking horrible myspace page is up forever! I probably could do something about it, but I guess I dont care enough.....until my employer finds it or something.

At this point, opposing DRM is a principle for me, Even if I can work around it, I'd rather just vote with my wallet and not bother getting involved with it, because encouraging solutions that treat the end-user like a potential criminal is doing nobody any favors - not the consumers or the content creators.

DRM is a rental system, because sooner or later you will have to circumvent it to use the file you ostensibly bought in the way that you want. It may take fifteen years before this happens, but sooner or later, it will throw a spanner in your works.

So, the quicker DRM goes the way of the dodo (because it will have to, sooner or later), the better it is for everyone.

Hmm, the top guys we're in contact with over there haven't mentioned doing this anytime soon. Is there something you know that we don't?

You don't have to contact top guys at divx to know that companies go out of business, especially user-hostile ones like divx.

I actually bought the latest shorts Rifftrax, against my better judgement. Rifftrax is the only reason I'd try to jump through hoops like this just to watch something on my TV.

Can anyone help me with my issues? Every time I log into my divx VOD account, the player tells me I need to download the latest version, even if I just did so, say, less than a minute ago. Anybody know how to make this stop?

Also, does anyone know how to find the divx authorization code for my Oppo DV-970HD player? It's not in the user manual, and the divx option in the player's menu is grayed out.

I realize these are Oppo and divx issues, not Rifftrax ones, but I thought I'd ask here first.

I understand why Rifftrax would contain DRM. After all, my wife and I (who went on our first date after finding out we were both MST fans) only watched every episode of MST3K, bought MST t-shirts and other merchandise, bought the MST episode guide, bought all of Mike's books, bought every last episide of Rifftrax, and tell everyone we can about Rifftrax. We might be copyright criminals.

That's really not fair. No one has accused YOU of being a criminal, but it IS true that Rifftrax stuff gets pirated, and you can understand why they guys might not want that.

I too believe that DRM is going to keep the buyers away, and only make the idea of a pirated, converted copy way more appealing, but I can understand where the guys are coming from.

Regarding the first point, no - it's different for each device, unfortunately. It's up to the device manufacturer to decide where the activation for DivX goes. You can blame that on your device's maker, not DivX.

Regarding your second point, you must not have read any of our previous responses about the DivX DRM. The DRM is an unfortunate side effect of using DivX, which was our number one choice for a) preventing movies from being pirated (the other movie studios insist that there be either content or access control on anything that gets put out On Demand) and also for b) allowing us to serve a ton of data without having to deal with bandwidth issues.

If there was a way to have DivX serve our files DRM-free, we would probably go that route (although I'm speaking unofficially here, since I don't make the big decisions) but it is talked about a lot here and we are deciding our next steps.

We do understand the concerns surrounding DRM and we're doing our best to try and find a middle ground. Rest assured that our honest customers will be rewarded.

No, I can't understand where they're coming from with the DRM. Forcing me to jump through all these hoops to prove I bought the short before I can watch it on my TV sure seems as if they're assuming I might have stolen it. Even the DRM on iTunes doesn't make me connect to the internet every time I listen to a song or force me to track down secret codes.

I don't know the ins and outs of providing bandwidth, but it sounds really fishy that Rifftrax can provide bandwith for the entire audio catalog and two shorts (the DRM-free ones), but not for other shorts. Given some of the other responses in this thread, I don't think I'm the only one who would rather pay, say, $1.50 or $2 for a short if it were DRM-free to cover bandwidth. $1 per short seems really cheap anyway. Maybe you could privide the shorts both ways, one for those who have figured out how to watch the DRMed shorts, and a more expensive one for those of us who haven't.

And I really, really appreciate that the new short up on the front page is DRM-free. These shorts are like having brand new MST shorts, especially when we can watch them on our TV.

In all fairness, "all these hoops" is really an exaggeration. Some people can get the DivX thing working in 5 minutes, others can't. That's fine. But the same is true about the mp3 riffs in general - we understand you can't please or provide for everyone, and that's why - even in the DRM shorts that people have demonized - we provide the mp3 so you can do what you want with it. Even pirate it, which has happened - and will always happen - because people are douchebags.

Quote...but it sounds really fishy that Rifftrax can provide bandwith for the entire audio catalog and two shorts (the DRM-free ones), but not for other shorts.

You would really be surprised how much bandwidth it takes just to provide our regular mp3 offerings. But trust me when I say, it's a lot, and to add these files (the smallest, formatted for iPod, is still almost twice the size of your average RiffTrax mp3) would cause a huge spike in outgoing bandwidth. However, we are planning to have a content delivery network in place soon to allow for a better user experience and take the load off our servers.  And it's not JUST shorts - we have a VOD library of full-length features too.

QuoteAnd I really, really appreciate that the new short up on the front page is DRM-free. These shorts are like having brand new MST shorts, especially when we can watch them on our TV.

Glad to hear it.

Didn't realize that this wasn't DRM free. My divx player keeps saying that there are network errors. When I pay money for something it should just work.. None of these stupid hoops to jump through.. You guys have lost my business forever..

Seeing as how the majority of our VOD content is DRM, it might be too much to put that kind of a notice on all of them. Which is why we put "DRM-Free" on those specifically. Not a bad suggestion, but I think if each product contains "a mention" of DRM whether it's with or without, that might prove to be even more confusing. At least that's my opinion. Thoughts?

I think everyone should assume it has DRM unless it is marked as DRM-free.    That is how most things are labeled and marketed (e.g. "Chicken Noodle Soup" and "Salt Free Chicken Noodle Soup").

Which is probably good if you are the same "repeter" that regularly posts RiffTrax to USENET. If you are not the same "repeter" you might want to change your display name. IF you are the same "repeter" than you are a complete and utter douche bag and a moron for using the same name on usenet on this forum.

To be fair to "repeter" (he pets again and again?), the product description also failed to mention:

1.   The download link does NOT contain links of free plasma TVs
2.   The file does not include a free copy of "Citizen Kane"
3.   That downloading the file does not make you smarter, taller or faster.

You have lost me forever too.

Well, he claims that he has never heard of usenet (even though he found out about RiffTrax from a torrent site) and that it's just a coincidence that most  of the files uploaded to the usenet using his same unique user name are also the ones that he has purchased from us.  Guess we were wrong to suspect anything!

I know it's been said before ad nauseum, so please add my voice to the list of those who just want to be able to watch Rifftrax on my nice big TV.  There are probably many like me who don't have the ability to burn CDs or whatever you people are doing, and frankly I don't enjoy feeling stupid because I'm not technically savvy.  Part of the reason I started watching Rifftrax is that it's simple and relatively low-tech.

Seriously, you have so many loyal fans, I think most if not all of us would happily pay a buck or 2 to support you even if this stuff was available free via pirated sources.  Especially those of us who have been fans since the MST days.

In case it matters at all, the ultimate way for me to enjoy these shorts is to buy a single DRM-free .dvx file, download it to a flashdrive, and just plug it directly into my DVD player's USB port.  That ...brings me tears of joy!

I fully understand the "why" of DRM, even though it's usually just a giant pain in the *ss, but I really hate the idea of the mandatory DivX player install...so much so, that even though I spent NINETY NINE WHOLE CENTS for "Cathy", I'm not going to install the player to watch it. There! Take that! lol  ;)

Seriously, though, that whole idea just sucks. Tsk tsk.

All of the shorts are now DRM Free.  If you already purchased it, you have access to DRM Free files, and shorts will be DRM Free going forward.  So this thread is no longer needed.
