Title: Thoughts?
Post by: gammer on October 19, 2006, 08:32:48 PM
So do you think "they" honestly forgot to make the Halloween section?

I wonder if they did it on purpose because they may have wanted more people to see the movie before we start writing/talking about it?
Maybe our comments sometimes, persuade some people to not buy the rifftrax?

Just a thought...and maybe I'm way over thinking this and they really did forget to put up a Halloween section.   ::)

They must be too busy thinking of ways to haze the newcomers.

nah, I think they haven't put up a Holloween category is because they haven't recorded it yet. why would they put up a discussion about a product not released yet? if you want to discuss the original sans riff you could just go to some other forum

For their tardiness I reserve the right to post twice.  I loved it.  I think horror films work really well for riffing.  Even if they are well done, like Halloween was for the most part, they are just fundamentally absurd.  Also, long tension building shots give plenty of time for Mike and Kevin to do what they do best.  Though I need to have a word with Mr. Sharecrow....

Let's seeeee, I'd put it anywhere from 6 to 8.  It's quite good.  However, my experience was interrupted by technical difficulties.

I couldn't get share crow to work so instead I decided to use the most complicated method I could think of.  I played the rifftrax on a laptop which I hooked up to the a mixer, so I paused with a wireless mouse and used a different remote for volume.  I lost the remote for the dvd player so I hooked a portable dvd player straight into the tv, so I had a remote to pause the player and another for the tv volume.  So I had 4 remotes to work, and plus I unknowingly played the first quarter in full screen instead of wide.  I tried to tough it out and watch it in full, but I just couldn't take it.  The framing was horrible.  People's arms and legs were getting cut off left and right, it was gorier than the actual film.  And of course, after I went to the menu to fix it, the sync was minutes off so I had to re sync, which took a good 10 minuets of riffs being a little off before I got it.

But despite all that, I still loved it.  I'm sure I'll like it much more once I get it to work with sharecrow.

So we're posting our Halloween thoughts here? Okay...

I thought it was good.  Not great, but very funny in some places.  Let me just say, this is a hard film to riff.  There are long stretches where hardly anything happens; its just people walking.  Followed by more WALKING to the ominous but incredibly repetitive Halloween theme tune.  My favourite sections of the movie were actually when they weren't riffing the movie, such as the "playlet" they do about halfway through which made me almost choke to death with laughter on my Doritos.  There's some good stuff toward the end of the movie too, when the guys are baying for blood to be let, just for something to happen.  Now I'm really looking forward to the Matrix.

Any riffs you were expecting to hear but didn't? I'll definitely be doing more of my own riffing from now on, thanks to the contest. On my first pre-RiffTrax viewing, there was:

some character: SH*T!
victim #1: I've already got a place for that.
me: The backyard.

Helped a lot that they actually compared her to a dog later.

And I thought the warning sound for the train did a good approximation of the Halloween theme. And there were a few MST3K references that coulda been made, but probably weren't to distance this project from MST3K. Like, when victim #1 said, "Be natural! Be natural!" I was like, "Mr. B Natural? Where?!" And who else was just waiting for "Chief? MCCLOUD!" You know where I mean. Kevin even started listing random names.

Well, Kevin Murphy is officially my favorite riffer.  STV and this one are my favorites.  I can't wait for The Matrix.

"I.....think someone is leaning on the synthesizer."

He just kills me.

FREAKIN AWESOME!

Just great!  I think it might be right up in the top 3 for me.  Kevin and Mike were ON!  And there were soooo many opportunities for them to just freestyle it up that I was in tears laughing so hard.  Even my wife loved it, and she's not a big fan.

And, it seemed that Kevin was in full "Tom Servo" mode.  His excitable voice and the cracks he made sounded so much more like Servo than in STV.  It was really MST3K old school riffing.

I loved it.  Hire Kevin full-time!  Then when Bill guest stars it will be like a real homecoming.

I watched the movie before the rifftrax came out just to see if I could guess what some of the riffs would be. And I noticed that the three friends really didn't seem to like each other. After seeing that I was really hoping that Mike and Kevin would notice this too. Needless to say I wasn't let down. I think it was a good job all around on this one.

According to the Behind-the-scenes material, the movie was filmed during the spring in Southern California, so they had to buy some fake leaves and paint them brown to scatter everywhere in an attempt to make it look like fall.

Those silly independent filmmakers!   ;)

I'll be honest, somewhere in the Pleasance riffing I was hoping for at least one Puma Man reference.

Pleasance: "Tony Farms! You're just a small, insignificant... human being!"
Tom: "That's Hooman being!"

I really liked this one - particularly the riffs about the hyperextended "people walking down the street" shots.

Unlike almost everyone I've ever met, I was bored senseless by Halloween the first time I saw it. Don't get me wrong; I fully recognise its place in movie history and the undeniable influence it has had. However, for me, it utterly fails as a horror film.

The Rifftrax treatment in this case was, in my lowly opinion, richly deserved, well judged and hugely appreciated.

Cheers,

Cy.

I watched this one last night (along with X Men).  Halloween has always been one of my favorite films of the genre, and I expected a great Rifftrax to come out of it.  I was not disappointed.  I had forgotton how slowly paced and methodical this movie was in dishing out the gore.  Much more refreshing than the Hostel's and Saw's that come out nowadays, where everything is so in-your-face and non-stop.

I always love it when they make music references during a riff, such as the Janis Ian and Sheriff references during this, or the Talking Heads reference during X Men.

Speaking of which, did you catch the Radiohead reference in Halloween?

This one was pretty great, although I was having some unfortunate sync errors at the end. It was one of those situations where trying to correct it just seems to make things worse...

The second I saw Donald Pleasance, I started laughing. Damn you, thePumaman, for conditioning an automatic hillarity response to his Royal Baldness.

How did Jamie Lee Curtis manage to look an embittered 35 even at that age?

Favorite Riffs:

"Bloody knife... clown suit... Okay, well it's cold out here, we're gonna head inside."

"....and 15 years later, the parents are still both staring at the kid on their lawn."

(kid falls on pumpkin)  "A young Billy Corgan sets out on his musical career..."

For super meta- action, AMC aired Halloween last night in widescreen with added scenes and running text commentary.

Peter Cushing apparently passed on the role of Dr. Loomis, later calling it "the biggest mistake of his career."   But I love Donald Pleasence, and wouldn't trade him for a couple of Grand Moff Tarkin jokes.

That was good, yeah!

I'd always thought of Halloween when passing Haddonfield, NJ.  Turns out the producer was from there and named the town in the film after it.

In actuality the movie was shot in some part of Hollywood.  As Mike and Kevin pointed out, it's the part that has various time and climate zones within it.

The quick reveal shot of an adult Michael Myers lifting up his mask turns out to be the brother of Erin Moran, tv's "Joanie" from Happy Days.  Maybe he was the oldest brother that we never saw on that show...

I'd seen Halloween multiple times, but Rifftrax made it fresh and memorable. One of my favorite scenes was one of the (many) extended walking bits where Kevin keeps saying,"Okay, now...cut! Cut! Okay. Now....Cut! " That was great.

This one isn't in my top 5, but it's still a great movie with great riffing. Watching the movie after so long also reminded me about how the pacing of movies has changed, where everything is very rapid and in your face. Give me that old school horror with subtle build-up.

Great Rifftrax - But you have to question the filmmaker's motives.

It seems to be a nerdy revenge against classmates who got laid in high school.

I guess John Carpenter wasn't a very popular young man.

90% of horror movies involve the smart, clean living virgin surviving while anyone who has sex or does dugs is killed.  Slashers are basically morality tales at their core.

On the DVD extras, Carpenter is quoted as making an argument that the bond between the heroine and the killer are that they are both shy, withdrawn, 'repressed' people who are more watching life than living it.

It's maybe a bit of a stretch, but the killer could be interpreted as her suppressed anger acting out on her 'friends' who are more engaged in teenage living, and who also look down on her and treat her less than stellar (as Mike and Kevin point out).

And once again P.J. Soles (Carrie) pays the price.

Joe Don, I live near Haddonfield NJ, my own self.  I also think of the movie whenever I drive by.  Interesting...

Also, to the point about the morality play of slasher pics, yes, that concept has been discussed over and over in film classes and in books and essays on the subject.  It was picked over ad infinitum all during the late 80's early 90's.  It's actually quite fascinating.  At first, even the film makers didn't realize they were doing it, (like it was just a psychological response) but then it became a staple and was even parodied several times, so it lost it's mystique.

I think Stephen King once commented that slasher pics were the most puritanical of films because of the zeal with which they punished "sinners".  hehe...

Just watched it last night and I LOVED it! I avoid horror movies like the plague because I'm too easily grossed out, so was relieved that it was so tame, and the riffing was top notch!  I'm still laughing thinking about a chicken on the piano. I agree Kevin sounded more Servo-ish. The scenes with the three girls despising each other reminded me fondly of similar MST scenes, like in Merlin when John McEnroe talks with his psychic friend, and Tom's going, "you stupid bastard, I could stab your eyes out, so help me god!"  Hee hee. And the acting was sooooo bad--I can't believe it was considered a legitimate horror classic. The fuzzy-haired girl read her lines almost exactly like the chick in Touch of Satan. Anyhoo--possibly my favorite rifftrax to date!  Thanks Mike and Kevin!   :D

Oh--who is the Olympic gymnast they mention when the dead guy swings out of the closet? Kurt someone? That whole scene cracked me up--"Half of me, take half of me!"

Did anyone notice if Mike and Kev did a Telefon reference when Donald was in the phone booth, near the beginning, by the abandoned red pickup truck?  Kevin recited a bit of poetry there, but it didn't seem to be from the "miles to go before I sleep" Robert Frost refrain that Donald dishes out over many a payphone in Telefon.

That's pretty much my view of it. A seminal film? Yes. A sign of things to come, both in terms of the flood of imitators that would follow and in terms of the growing skill of Carpenter as a director? Yes. But a "good" movie? Erm..no. The continuity problems, the walking-scene padding, the endless teen chatter with no relevance, the wearisome scenes of people just sitting there watching TV, the music cues that go nowhere... It's perfectly fine to respect the movie's place in history, but that doesn't mean it isn't deserving of biting comments. And the comments were great. Another winner.

Yes I noticed this too. Its sounds better that they used a "phone" effect as apposed to cupping your hands over your mouth, like they used to do in the MST days.

I also thought that the Donald Pleasence riffs were just 'grand'. To me, if it wasn't for these riffs, then this would be the worst RiffTrax to date. But lucky for us there were plenty of Donald 'no so' Pleasence riffs to make this rifftrax worthwhile.

Sorry I aggravate some people by saying Halloween is bad movie. It just seems like it is!  I'm sure many people think that about movies I like though.

What Kevin quotes in that scene -- "As the June light turns to moonlight, [he'll] be on [his] way" -- is actually from a fairly obscure Beatles tune called, coincidentally enough, I'll Be On My Way.  Though what the hell that has to do with Donald Pleasance, I have no clue.

The one riff I was surprised I didn't hear?  Not a single Mike Myers reference.  They probably made a deal not to do something so obvious, but I was still surprised.  Of course, I never noticed that the name "Michael Myers" is not actually said much in the movie.  Maybe, what, twice?

Oh, yeah!  And wasn't that kid in the movie supposed to be dressed as Luke Skywalker?  Not a single Skywalker riff.  And I saw the perfect place for one!  When he and the little girl are watching TV and he crawls over the side of the couch to go to the window, I inserted the following riff:  "Luke Couchwalker."

Brilliance, I tell you!

I particularly enjoyed the Griswold Family Truckster riffs, and after watching this one, I happened to catch Halloween on AMC the other night, at the scene where Donald Pleasance is standing on the street as Michael drives past him in the station wagon, and I chuckled at the memory of the riffing from that moment.  Heh.

I actually love Halloween, sans riffing, but this was hilarious. Mike's voicing for Sheriff Brackett (the great Charles Cyphers) still has me laughing when I think about it. "At all times I like to give the impression of a potential rapist"... Not an exact quote. But that was classic. Kevin Murphy was great too. He seems to have perfected the muffled wearing-a-mask voice and the other-end-of-the-phone voice. I liked the crack about Lindsay Wallace being a stuffed child.

This was the hardest I've laughed in a while. The only other rifftrax I've gotten so far is Point Break. Not as funny as Halloween, but still funny. I think Kevin Murphy and/or Bill Corbett should be on board for each track, because I think the guys work better when they have someone to play off of.

Just got through watching Halloween and thought it was hilarious... just the bit near the start where we got a shot over Myers shoulder as Laurie walked away and Mike was doing a Darth Vader voice aplogising for getting in the wrong film and calling for George Lucas... Classic

I don't know what it is-- I really enjoy hearing the other guys' voices, but my favorites so far are the ones in which Mike works alone.  I know I'm in the minority here, but then again, I wasn't not-voted Prom Queen for nothin'.

I think the problem with Kevin and Bill, and I find this a very slight problem, is that they tend to be very cynical towards the movie they are riffing.  I don't think they should fawn over the movies, but they should lighten up a bit on them.  It is, after all, just a movie.  They should really just relax.   ;D

Maybe it's so they appear different to what Mikes doing, to balance things out... you know, good cop-bad cop

It just feels more forced when Mike is with Kevin or Bill, especially in the beginning, like they're too scripted or something.

I cannot abide horror movies.  Halloween was the first one I ever saw-- I watched it yesterday and had nightmares all last night :(  Not even the Rifftrax could keep me safe!

The same way I know I don't have to staple my hand to the wall to find out if I'll enjoy it?  I'm really really sensitive to gore, even the suggestion of gore.  There are certain "average" action movies that I can't handle because they're just too violent-- even Roadhouse and some episodes of MST are bothersome to me.  I also have an overactive imagination; bad combo.  I just don't want to scare myself or see the deepest, darkest sides of human nature for my entertainment.

Given my reaction to Halloween, even with the commentary, it seems I've been making the right choices for myself.  Your mileage may vary, of course.  Other people are more than welcome to like and/or watch horror movies.  I prefer comedy and fantasy because it reminds me of the good in life.

If you try the stapler to the hand, and enjoy it, then you can naturally proceed to Clive Barker films...

LadyK, my heart is going out to you, right now.  I'm sorry that you were scared by this movie, or any movie.  Please remember that The Universe is wise and compassionate (is that spelled right?  I'm still on cold medication).

Oh, you'll love it!  It's a big dumb movie with some violence, but mostly a ton of stupidity.

It's hard for me to be afraid of horror films because I believe in eternal life and the wise and compassionate Universe all of that.  It actually frustrates me because I WANT to love horror movies but I just have a hard time being scared.  That's why I say, if you understand that, you won't be frightened by anything.

All's I'm saying... there IS someone or something always looking out for you.

That was a really nice thing to say, Randy.  :) And I believe in all those things too. It's just sometimes a little harder to remember that I believe in them when I'm watching mutilated bodies pile up on the screen -- but since I hate to miss a Rifftrax, I'll at least try!

LOL!  That's why I love rifftrax!  It makes fun of stuff that other people think is scary/serious etc.  Many native American traditions say that if you can laugh in the face of fear then you have conquered it.  Mike Nelson and Kevin Murphy help us do that.

Happy SAMHAIN, everyone!

edited for a gigantic grammatical error....

That's why action/sci-fi/horror movies work best for Rifftrax. They take themselves too seriously. And when those movies try to be funny but aren't, that's when the hilarity is really ramped up.

I had a MST3K moment during the scene when Michael is stalking Jamie Lee Curtis with his stolen station wagon.  Watching the featureless suburban landscape drift past the windows for about five minutes, I had no option but to say "sigh...Manos!"

It may have been lost in the shuffle, but I loved Kevin's line of "Mike Oldfield called, he wants his music back!" during the end credits.  It's just something I appreciate as a Tubular Bells fan.

Personally I loved this one - horror is probably one of the best genres to riff on.

Also good to hear the return of Mikes Donald Pleasence voice - a reminder of the heady days of Pumaman (or is that Poomaman?).

Very well done rifftrack, ^^^ I've also noticed that horror movies work well (all except for the Grudge of course :-)

Edit: that came off as harsh, grudge riff is okay, just wasnt my favorite :-*

I love Halloween. My favorite of the genre. However, The riff is feckin hilarious and does point out some of the more obvious flubs and gaffes that I kinda overlooked as a fan.

Pure 70's gold riffin'.

It was funny, but my friend and I agreed that it was too well-made of a movie to really dig into. Good attempt, and I will definitely watch it again in late October.

B Natural? Totally with you on McCloud.

I thought at least some of the OBVIOUS mistakes....

Like when the 3 girls are walking after school and Linda makes the comment,"Speed kills!'
Following the stop and the Shape driving off again, they HEAD THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION they were going:heading once again toward the school.

Another one I thought was funny, was when Donalds character is on the side of the road on the pay phone.....when he goes and discovers the truck, you can clearly see the boom operator in the pay phone reflection

All in all....I enjoyed it immensely . :D
