Ok, so here's what's up:
I've got the 2 Disc Special Edition of Independence Day which according to the front cover includes both the Special and Theatrical Editions of the movie. However, the Disc itself only seems to include the Special Edition. There is no option on the main menu to choose between the two.
To solve this minor problem, if you are running PowerDVD and right click and select Go To and then Title 4, this will allow you to access the original Theatrical Edition.
However, and here's where the Major problem seems to occur, if you try to use DVD Decrypter, you can only select the Special Edition, as it only recognises the first 10 Seconds of Title 4 which is the the copyright warning screens you get before the film starts.
I have the same exact problem. Here's my theory from looking at the raw .VOB files. It seems that while this DVD claims to contain the special edition and the theatrical version it really only contains the special edition. However, they have some done some kind of trickery to make the DVD play the special edition in a way that exactly matches the theatrical version.
My guess is that when you pick the theatrical version the DVD skips certain scenes while it's playing. If you find a solution to make DVDCrypter work correctly, otherwise I'm just going to watch this one the old fashioned way and hope I don't have to take a piss during the movie.
I have the 2-disc UK version, and the first thing I see when I put it in my player is a menu showing a picture of the White House with two options in the bottom corners of the screen, Theatrical Version and Extended Version.
Then when I select the Theatrical Version, I'm taken to a second menu with four options:-
Play Theatrical Version;
Set up;
Chapters;
Go to Extended Version.
But then again it went completely out of sync with the Trax within the first 15 minutes, so I have a suspicion that it was playing the Extended version even though I asked it not to. >:(
I'm going to try it again tonight.

This sounds like my copy.

No problems with that though, sounds like there are different pressings?
When I get home i'll take a screenshot of my DVD Decryptor screen.
Well, here's what I get with DVD Decrypter:

And now I can't get the Damn Theatrical Edition working again :grr:
Heres mine.

I dunno.
The first 3 Disembaudio sync lines were spot on, but the fourth was way off, just as if there was half a scene difference between the film and the riff.
Maybe it's like Fantastic 4, where there were slightly different Theatrical versions.
It doesn't say anything about it on dvdcompare.net, but maybe that's because the whole 2-versions-on-one-disc schtick is confusing things.
I notice, before anything else, that your copy is multi-region, BathTub. That may be the crucial difference.
If so, that sucks. >:(
I'll take a pic of my DVD Decrypter screen before I try to re-synch later on tonight.
no thats just AnyDVD
My version:-

Pretty much the same as BathTub's.
Evolution117, which version have you got (date/cover/production code etc.)?
Well, it seems that I may have finally found the answer to my problem. That answer isn't a good one unfortunately. :( It would seem that I have been screwed by Fox >:(
For whilst the DVD Case I have is this:

It seems that the Actual Discs themselves are from the R2 DTS Release of the movie, which only included the Special Edition. :grr:
I guess PowerDVD must've skipped or something that time. It's not fair I tells ya, Stupid Fox.
Ah ok, if the studio is being tricksy that's hard to fix.
It appears my disc has a glitch, too.
First time I tried to play the Theatrical version, it played the Special Edition instead.
Second time I tried to play the TV, it just kept recycling the menu instead.
If anyone else is in this predicament, just jump to Title 2 and it'll play the TV fine.
So basically whoever made these discs, sucks.
arse.
I got the UK DTS disc too. No theatrical cut. :-[
