Title: What have we learned?
Post by: Raven on August 14, 2007, 03:08:58 PM
I learned that if you date a stripper it really hurts your chance for promotion.

If aliens attack your chance of survival greatly increases if you wear a dog costume.  Dogs always make it but First Ladies are most likely toast.

Eventually everyone gets to play the president of the United States at some point in their career.

I learned that shooting down a fifteen mile across target as it is hovering directly above population centers will result in no casualties.

I learned that one nuclear device can obliterate a sphere of metal hundreds of miles across.  And that even after it has been blown apart, scattering chunks at least twenty meters across of dense metal it somehow doesn't wipe clean the half of the planet that was facing it.

Today is the day we declare our independence!  Not that we actually have anything to declare independence from, we're just going to declare it because it's the name of the movie.

I learned that strippers still have to strip even if there is no one there to watch, and if you refuse to strip for no one somehow the club owner looses money and is forced to fire you.

Even though firefighters have lost their lives when they were caught in the middle of forest fires due to lack of oxygen (firestorm), a whole city can go up in a ball of fire and - if you're a named character - you won't suffocate right in the center of it.

The aliens wear armor that takes a whole room of Area 51 scientists to get through it but one Air Force flier can punch right through it and knock the alien cold.

No matter how hard you try to - or who tries to do it - you cannot ignite the atmosphere of the entire planet.

And it doesn't matter that one of your old ships is in good working order and in contact with your main ship (where you could trace it's location) or that you can access their satellites and all the secret information going through their goverment conversations - you won't be able to find Area 51.

Am I the only one that thinks these aliens are such total f*ck-ups that they aren't actually "sweeping across the galaxy like locusts" but are really running from a long succession of ass-kickings?

I learned that operating on an hostile alien neither requires you to anesthesize the alien nor have security in the room with you, or in the next room, or even in the general vacinity.

Area 51's break room is well stocked with booze.

Aliens need a better firewall.

Chiefs of Staff really want to nuke things whether there's a good reason to or not.

In a global crisis most of the world will just on their duffs and wait for the Americans to do something cool.

Vivica Fox is, well, a fox.

I'd bet that most militaries do (the US certainly does).  There's something to be said for a code that requires that requires only on/off and duration for communication.

Now why they had telegraph keys for sending the Morse Code is something that I can't explain.

Actually a point similar to this started a huge argument/debate in the IMDB forum.

It was something along the lines of "The Yanks save the world again like how they won WWII, Korea, Vietnam all by themselves"  and  "Hey, lay off, the reason why Americans are the heroes of the movie is the fact that it is made by Americans. In British movies the Brits are the heroes, etc....."

Quite a fun read actually.

The US won Vietnam?   :o :o :o :o

BTW, these people would love the movie released in the US as Godzilla 1985.   From imdb.com:  "....in the Japanese version, the Russian submarine officer tries to stop the nuclear weapon that was accidentally launched. This was changed for the US version so that the Russian officer actually launched the weapon."

Well, after watching some of the deleted scenes, I've learned that this movie could've been a lot worse. Movie editors of America, I salute you.

I've also learned that in the event of an alien attack, I'm seeking shelter with PSLOwner. With your telegraph/Blackberry doohicky and my 733t haxxor skillz, those alien commie bastards will never know what hit 'em! 8)

We'll still need a wisecracking pilot who knows the manuvers of extraterrestrial vessels, though. :P

I learned that an alien vessel that is several miles wide and has almost unfathomable mass causes no more than a little rumble when it falls to the earth.

I learned that although aliens have no vocal cords, they still squeal like pigs when you shoot them.

I learned that the Military at Area 51 is quite stupid and selfish, and that it takes a civilian to realize that the whole passel of folks on the ground level of the base are in danger of the gigantic alien vessel heading right for them.

I learned that there is at least one person in high-ranking government positions that is evil for no apparent reason.

I learned that elite American fighter pilots are allowed to make long speeches in the middle of their extremely dangerous and important missions.

I learned that Harry Connick Jr. is extremely annoying, and that his death was sooooooooooooo unexpected.

We also learned that invading aliens would rather destroy random non-combative targets in their first attack than go after installations that can actually fight back.  Those can wait for much later (giving them time to come up with a defense).

(a plan which it's stupidity is only matched by the aliens in the latest War of the Worlds...where the aliens immediately start frying people who are no threat to them and yet who they could need later to fertilize their weed)

That cable companies have a giant wall on which they can watch all tv-stations at once and has a nifty built-in AI that can dramaticly re-arrange the pictures on them to give the President a large picture on this wall during addresses.  That or people can only watch part of the president's body on certain channels.

Actually, given the tech differences, the fact that they don't really care about civilian casualties, and the impact of the shock attack going after the largest population centers first does make sense.  It's all about the destruction of the infrastructure.  And since presumably aliens wouldn't speak English or have access to AAA guides they might not be able to pick out military targets in which case attacking the major population centers is more likely to catch one of those.  Once those are wiped you start hunting down any major source of heat or radio.

But they obviously did have a tourist guide, because they attacked sightseeing hotspots like the Empire State Building and the Whitehouse.
The aliens obviously knew that these otherwise completely unremarkable buildings would have a great symbolic effect on the American audience.

Ah, but that's because - as we learned from this film - shockwaves and fireballs and various aftermaths caused by aliens travel at 1/10th the speed they normally would.

We also learned that invading aliens would rather destroy random non-combative targets in their first attack than go after installations that can actually fight back.  Those can wait for much later (giving them time to come up with a defense).

Clever people, those aliens.

Fracking ZAGATS.............

I learned that figuring out a patern in how often a signal is broadcast grants you immediate access to everything about the intricate computer language being transmitted, to the point where, without working on it for more than a day, you can invent a crippling computer virus that will bypass any of their firewalls.

To be fair, Goldblum did hire the Geek Squad from Best Buy to help him out.

You'd think they'd go after industrial centers, ports and more centers of govermnent than the White House if that were true, though, and not waste their time destroying well-known and symbolic but effectively useless monuments. Since they weren't accepting surrenders and didn't intend on leaving any of us alive, there's no point in breaking our morale with shock and awe.

I learned that if the aliens had installed Norton Antivirus, we'd be toast.

(Unless, at the last minute, the Daleks ALSO invaded, in which case the aliens would have been toast, and the humans would all have been turned into pig slaves)

I learned that spaceships designed for aliens with radically different anatomy can be flown by cavemen....I mean human pilots.  In fact, they don't even need any test flights, they can just use 'pilot magic' to figure everything out.

I learned that aliens are evil and absolutely won't negotiate with us, even if they're captive and we can obvously kill them.

I think the reason is fairly apparent in that instance ([cough]Haliburton[/cough]).

I'm pretty sure Rocker Dude's attempt to make it a 2 and half day work week would not go down well with conglomerates.  His amendment of the  pledge of allegiance to the lyrics of "Don't Fear the Reaper" would polarize also.   :)

May have missed some one mentioning these, but I learned a few things;

-Aliens are dumb as paste in many ways. They build massive starships, but can't think of a way to shield an incredibly vulnerable portion of the ship that, when open to attack, will blow the whole damn thing up. I believe it's implied they've done this to other worlds by Pullman. In none of these little moves did they ever get this weakness revealed?
-Ignoring the other huge physics issues...  Downing a massive evil alien spaceship is something to celebrate. ...Well, yeah, but it ignores that the sheer size would cause such massive destruction people within a comfortable viewing distance of it going down would die.
-Aliens are dumb, again. Really dumb. Their little laser guns on the tiny crap ships are inaccurate as hell. Modern combat aircraft have servos in place to help aim efficiently. They don't appear to have missiles that can seek a target. They appear to have scientists who are more interested in designing scary looking spaceships and super keen special effects ladden lasers than anything that would be concievably effective in any combat situation outside of a narrow "Blow up population center, SWARM LIKE DUMB ASSES" mentality.
-...Really friggin dumb. Why did they need to use Earth's satellites to coordinate? What, they don't have clocks where they're from? Do they not realize using said satellites would send up a bit of a red flag? Do they have any kind of actual command structure or are they like some random gang of space-thugs who are planning this out at the last minute?

...In short, I learned that these aliens shouldn't be able to take on a marmot, let alone a whole planet.

That this is the second time that Mike and Co. have missed a chance for an obvious Battlestar Galactica riff. (The first being Space Mutiny.)  Come one! Mary MacDonald was in this thing! You get points for mentioning Dances With Wolves, but you dropped the Hot Pocket on this one.

And how can you watch a movie with Adam Baldwin and NOT make a Firefly/Serenity riff, gorramit!

Also needed more Data riffs.

Otherwise great job, as always!

I learned that Will Smith pronounces Earth very well when he says "welcome to Earth" which almost makes all the 'welcome to erf' jokes seem like they were pathetic and a little racist.
