This has bugged me for a long time ???
They're going at warp 8, and never crash into cloaked Klingon ships.
Well, I know when I was on Nuclear Submarines, The Sonar was Very sensitive so as to detect anything & everything moving in the oceans..
But in the world of Star Trek, Guess they've got pretty good helmsman avoiding those invisible ships out there :P
Unless they use standard travel lines, the chances of running into someone in space are pretty minimal. Also, doesn't warp move you, I dunno, under the fabric of reality?
If it was that big a problem in the future I guess they would have addressed it. But let's face it, nobody ever addressed why the hell Kirk and Picard were able to actually come back from the Nexus and furthermore why the hell they didn't just travel back in time to the moment of Soran's birth and just strangle the little shit sucker!!!!!
Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.
[Shamelessly stolen from a source that any nerd will recognize instantly.]
The ships are only a few hundred meters across. They're traveling thousands of times faster than light in a volume of space that could be measured in cubic light-years. That's 9,460,528,400,000,000 meters to a side. Even in orbit they're dealing with a volume of space measured in thousands of kilometers.
Basically the odds of hitting a cloaked ship would be like you buying a lottery ticket for every state that runs one and winning every single one.
Why ships always face each other across hundreds of meters and are orientated the same way in the Star Trek universe is left as an exercise for the reader.
Yeah... uh.. Right!
Sounds Good to Me..
How about...because the cloaked ships move out of the way...?
In Time to get out of the way of an approaching ship at Warp 10+...

Yeah... and that's very improbable. In fact, you'd probably need some sort of drive just to figure out how improbable that would be. Although, i would guess that the chances of flying into a cloaked spaceship is something like two to the power of 2 billion, 79 million, 460 thousand, 347 to one against. ;)

Let's just say it's an anomoly and call it a day.
One other thing: They obviously don't have to worry about stuff like that. At warp speed, dust motes would ram a ship with about the force of an atom bomb, so they can't actually be moving through space, or the crew would be summersaulting over railings pretty much 24/7.

Anyway my thoughts on the topic... maybe if the invisible ship was spying in front of the enterprise because the aliens don't know when youre going to be taking off.

If anyone is actually interested. The warp necelles create a warp field that squashes space in front of the ship and stretches the space behind the ship. So technicaly the Enterprise doesn't move at all in warp speed. Space moves around the ship.

At warp speed, dust motes would ram a ship with about the force of an atom bomb, so they can't actually be moving through space, or the crew would be summersaulting over railings pretty much 24/7.
Except that there's no atmosphere or anything holding the dust mote in place, so the immensely greater mass of the ship would send the mote shooting off on a endless trajectory until it collided with some other object.
Can you imagine the force phasers, photon torpedoes, and other ship to ship weapons must be packing? On top of their inherent firepower, weapons are sometimes being fired at
warp speeds, which, when you consider the vacuum of space, means the energy burst or projectile hits the target moving faster the the ship it was fired from, and the ship itself was already moving faster than light. That gives you an idea how durable starship hulls are.

But sir the odds of successfully navigating an asteroid field are approximately 3,720 to 1!!!!!!!

I'm having this vision of planets scoured clean by the radiation burst from interstellar hydrogen and dust moving and relativistic velocities bombarding their planet due to a starship flying by.
This would be a much larger problem than the cloaked ships, BTW, since the star ships moving at warp would be leaving a streaming cone of death behind them and they do move into warp near planets...

Damn you beat me to it.
Warp would be cool if, of course, sub-space (a requirement for the tech to work) actually existed. Which it doesn't.
I think we should all agree not to go faster than light. I know it's already a law, but that doesn't always stop people.
NO GOING SUPER-LUMINAL VELOCITIES! IT BAD! IT MAKE UNIVERSE GO BOOM!
No way, I want to be feared and hated for being know for destroying entire galaxies. If that doesnt get you laid, your hopeless.
It gets a bit tiring after a while when the chicks only want you for your galactic cannon. >:D
HUH-HUH!
YOU SAID 'GALACTIC CANNON'
HUH-HUH!!
To add to Sideswipe's thought, I was told by my physics professor that the nature of warp speed in Star Trek requires a ship to slip into hyperspace, which is a space that is unexplained except that we know it is removed from regular space, which would allow the ship to move freely without coming in contact with anything else (except for ANOTHER ship that has slipped into hyperspace but what are the odds of that??)

Very small. Like there could be anything living in hyperspace. People are just jumping at shadows.
I think they've changed how "warp" works three or four times over the years.
Also going back to the original premise of the thread. I think that a cloaked ship might the see Enterprise barrelling down upon them and get the hell out of the way.
