Title: What have we learned?
Post by: SecretAgentSuperDragon on June 01, 2007, 01:04:33 PM
I've learned that exposed Predator mandibles can be the most beutiful thing in the world in the right context.

I've gained a more nuanced understanding of Arizona's Governor Predator.

I learned that Predators usually kill everything without hesitation, but as soon as the last guy is defenseless and super easy to kill, the predator makes it self significantly weaker and drags it out for AS LONG AS POSSIBLE for some damn reason.

Actually that one had an excuse that was established in the film (as opposed to the other hundred times in cinema where this occurs for no good reason).  It wanted sport so it wouldn't attack an unarmed wounded man.  Presumably it decided that Arnold was a worthy opponent so it stripped its gear other than the knife before going at it again.

Feel free to debate whether or not he really was a worthy opponent and if the predator should have just shot him and stuffed his head for over the fireplace, though. :)

I thought the predator took his gear off, cuz it shorted out in the water and was useless to him. If his litle helmet thing with the laser gun isnt working well all hes got is his knife ;).  On the same scene, we l;earned predators can breath the same air we do, with no equiptment..... pretty neat

I learned it can take 1000's and 1000's of round to wound the predator. I learned when you see the predator just run through all your ammo, because somehow it will be worth it.

I also learned that as hunters we suck and somehow the predator landed in the one jungle where the biggest baddest army guys happened to be and still Arnold is the only one that decently put up a fight. I felt rather bad for Billy, the predator really took advantage of him.

also second person shooters suck, SPS, I do know why FPS games are much more fun.

While watching the movie, I was struck by how quickly Arnold "learns" what the Predators motives are.  like when he tells Anna, the captive, "he didn't kill you because you were unarmed."  Or maybe because she was a woman?  or because she had eaten something he didn't like for lunch?  Or because she's never been to the zoo?

Just seems that when you're dealing with the first ever intergalactic being you've ever encountered, maybe it is time to throw the rules of logic out the window.

I learned that being The Predator, an alien from another planet won't stop it from running for governor.

I've learned that we take no prisoners, unless they are sexy female ones.

I've learned that I really need to be more careful when buying DVDs.

See, when Predator was announced as being the next Rifftrax, I said "Sweet!" and ordered a copy on Amazon Marketplace. It arrived yesterday, just in time for the release. So, I watched the trax then walked over to my media shelf to file it away... and I discovered that I already owned the 15th anniversary collector's edition of Predator ,making my Amazon purchase completely unnecessary. D'oh. And my version didn't have fingerprints all over the disc either.

If the Predator won't kill if they're unarmed, why the hell didn't they just drop their guns?  ???

I learned that the guards at those camps arent 'Look outs'  but 'Look in's'

Also, the predator will let you take forever to set up a trap before he comes back at you.

Because then the Predator would become frustrated, lose patience and kill everyone anyway.

I believe I learned that the predator's "self-destruct" mechanism uses some serious over-kill. (Didn't I see a mushroom cloud?) But it can still be easily outrun by Arnold.

A mushroom cloud will be created by any sufficiently large explosion since the fireball goes up (the head) drawing up a column of debris filled air below it (the stem).  I've personally seen a natural gas explosion go up as a mushroom cloud.  It's still overkill, though.

I learned that a guy can shoot dozens of people without blinking and seem like a cold asshole, but when the alien that killed all his fellows is laying and dying, he just doesn't have the heart to finish the job on the poor thing.

I also learned that menacing alien hunters have some goofy assed laughs.

Oh yeah, and I also learned to... GOO!! RUUNNN!! GEET TO DA CHOPPAAA!!

I learned what the cover of the Predator's album will be if he ever releases one.

I learned that the best way to protect women is to keep them from protecting themselves. THAT must be why men were hesitant to let women get the vote! It all makes sense!

I also learned that, even if you're part of a group that brutally executes helpless prisoners, if you're pretty, you're not evil.

Ah hah!! This is where my Predator comicbook knowledge comes into play here. You see Predators (Yautja) are a race of alien Warriors with a very structured code of honor. In Arnold's case, the Predator hunting him was most likely impressed by his prey's industrious strategy and according to his code of honor, he decided to even up the odds out of respect and challenge him (Arnold) to hand to hand combat instead of killing him like all the others. Of course the fact Arnold took out his shoulder canon made it harder for the Predator to kill him that way.

Also I'd like to expand upon something I've run into with non-comicbook fans I've chatted with who are puzzled as to why the Predator didn't go after the girl and hunt her down like the men. This also goes back to the comicbooks in that the Yautja respect their female population (This might be due to the fact an adult female Yautja can grow up to 8 - 10 feet tall and can kick a male Yautja's carcass with ease.) and I suspect this sense of honor was the reason the girl was not picked off.

Arnold ducked an covered.  Haven't you ever see the old PSAs?

I love this movie, and like Lady_Deception, I am tempted to defend this movie from all the criticisms in this thread.  But I'll hold myself back, I know it's all in good fun.  Instead, I'll mention something that Mike pointed out (and something I never noticed before):

I learned that mission commanders are not informed that they don't have back-up until they are well on their way into the mission, and only after they explicitly ask about it.

I learned that goofy comic incidental music from childrens movies also works if you're being hunted by a bloodthirsty alien.

Also, if you're in the jungle and you think you see something invisible in it, it's a good idea to open every round you have off into the wilderness. In unison if you're in a group. THAT'LL show that jungle! :^)

That being in an 80's action flic qualifies you to become a state governor

That rescue teams pack enough weaponry to level several city blocks but don't do "dirty work" like assassinations. Ewwww. Icky.

What I learned I learned years ago when I first watched this movie:

Stan Winston is friggan -brilliant- when it comes to creature design.
