There were a lot of weird things on cable TV late at night in the 80s.
The dude in LA that had a big "Jesus Saves" light on some building and would rant and rave about how god wanted you to send him money to keep the light burning and would cover Greatful Dead songs with his in studio band was on of my favorites, but Santo Gold was one of the biggest WTFs that I can remember seeing.
