The future of The Jetsons just got a little meatier.

Conrad Vernon, who co-directed the Seth Rogen animated movie Sausage Party, has come aboard to develop with an eye to direct The Jetsons, Warner's Animation Group's big-screen take on the classic Hanna-Barbera television series.

Warner Bros. has long sought to adapt the movie for the silver screen and since the late 1990s has focused on a live-action version, propelled by the success of the live-action version of another classic Hanna-Barbera title, The Flintstones.

The new development firmly keeps the property on the animation track.

While it didn't last as long on the air as Flintstones, the show tapped into the Space Age wonder of the early 1960s and made a deep mark in pop culture as a Saturday morning cartoon staple and in syndication for decades.

The show focused on the misadventures of a family named the Jetsons, led by father George Jetson. Also in the pack were housewife Jane Jetson, teenager Judy Jetson, and tyke Elroy Jetson. Also in the orbit were Rosie the household robot and Astro, the family dog.

Paramount tried to mount a live-action version as did Universal. Warners has had the rights since at least the late 1990s and has developed versions that attracted directors such as Adam Shankman, Robert Rodriguez (the latter had a script by The Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg).

Vernon is a DreamWorks Animation vet who co-directed Shrek 2, Monsters vs. Aliens and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted. (Fun fact: he voiced the Gingerbread Man in the Shrek movies.)

He directed 2016's Sausage Party with Greg Tiernan. The raunchy movie received strong reviews and grossed almost $100 million domestically on a budget of only $19 million.

I liked the Jetsons as a kid, but mostly for the cool sci-fi designs of everything. So if it's animated that should be kept pretty well. The big thing is going to be the story. I remember the 1990 movie not being very good because the stakes weren't that impressive.
Sausage Party was surprisingly clever and funny, so I have some hope for this. I just hope this doesn't have the same controversy over animators not getting paid.

They want to make a 3D animation of it? NO WAY. It will be the same crap as The Smurfs. It kills the spirit of this.

The Jetsons Live-Action TV Series in Early Development (http://screenrant.com/jetsons-live-action-tv-series-development/)
Warner Bros. reveals a live-action TV series featuring The Jetsons is in the works, bringing the original '60s show back to life.

Warner Bros. announced work has begun developing a live-action TV series, rather than a feature length film, to revive The Jetsons. The news was reported by TVLine, who also reports that Family Guy EP Gary Ganetti will be heading up the project, and acting as EP alongside Robert Zemeckis and Jack Rapke. The reboot will be a sitcom, set 100 years in the future (like the original), and does not currently have a network to call home.
