Title: What have we learned?
Post by: Trekker4747 on July 17, 2015, 03:12:20 PM
I learned that it's shockingly easy to get excited about a Rifftrax.

I learned that James Nguyen is a true master of the bad movie.

I learned that Kevin hit the "Wait, what?!?" point at about the same time I did when I first watched it.

I learned that it is entirely possible to have your head explode from awesomeness.

I learned The Birds wasn't the only movie that Nguyen tried to homage. He did Vertigo too.

I learned Natalie has a brother. He was having lunch with her/his mother, so now we know what the elaborate tray of cold cuts were for.

I also learned that Rod bought Julie's parents house.
I also learned Natalie's mom was the executive producer of this film.

I also think I found a new Rifftrax that beats out the Apple for my favorite movie.

Now I go cup of coffee.
Finally I learned I cannot type today hence the edits and the need to go cup of coffee

Same here, plenty of times when I was ahead of the curve with the guys. I even noticed the prominent water cooler at the party before Bill said something about it.

I learned that Julie's parents lived in Rob from Birdemic's house.

I learned that Tippi Hedren will do a movie role, presumably, for nothing more than a half-punched Subway coupon.

I learned that our.... "hero"?   "Male lead?" "The guy the movie was focused on," took a shockingly long time to figure out the real reason why Julie wouldn't meet him in person.

I learned that revolutionary virtual reality programs and devices can run on, and last a long time on, an early 2000's laptop running off the battery.

I learned that revolutionary virtual reality programs some how just "know" what you look like in order to produce the in-VR avatar you, as well as "knowing" how you want to move through the virtual space and move your arms without any obvious means to input that information into the program.

I learned that the actress who played Julie (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1342461/reference) has appeared in real movies (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0870111/combined).

She was in Ang Lee's Hulk as well. So that's two bad films set in Frisco. Zing!

I learned not to get drunk on wine while watching a Rifftraxed James Nguyen movie.  I literally laughed so hard I threw up at the "Bill's gone full Numa Numa Guy!" line.

Provide for a woman financially and she's obligated to have sex with you...

Either this movie endorses marriage in the 50's, or something illegal in the present.

I learned that James Nguyen knows who Ada Lovelace is, and that the Ada programming language is named after her. No joke. When your expectations of someone are already as low as possible, any sign of actual intelligence or knowledge comes as a shock.

I was actually kind of impressed that that little detail was gotten right.

I learned that a 20Ghz chip was remarkably hard to sell in the early 2000s.  Considering such a speed was orders of magnitude faster than anything that existed at the time, when we were just breaching the 1GHz barrier, but is orders of magnitude faster than what's possible with current microchip technology.  Such speeds are only just now being conceived of using radically different  microprocessor technology.

But some dumpy schlub who can't seem to buy a suit that fits him right can't even sell a 20Ghz chip in 2003.  Man, people back then were hard sells!

I learned that a day without sex is a day wasted. Oh that must been from another movies. Everything in this movie is similar to that other movie. Only Natalie isn't Dead.

Ah,but it wasn't 2003. It was THE FUTURE! And in THE FUTURE with 3D Virtual Reality Dating, 20 GHZ chips are like sponges. Yeah they exist, but if you're making a living selling them, you're basically a step above barista.

I learned that people with perfect networked virtual reality software only use it to experience places that are a short bus ride from where they live.

I learned that the best computer programmers prefer cumbersome, long out-of-fashion programming languages.

I learned that Alfred Hitchcock really did ruin Tippi Hedren's career.

I learned that "I always imagined myself falling in love with someone who is alive" might be the greatest quote in movie history.

And sex-crazed douche friend like to make love to women who are fully clothed

I had the same reaction at around the same time and basically had to pause the movie so my friend and I could laugh and talk about how no part of the revelation made sense especially given his computer and the simple VR gear he had. Somehow that was giving him an immersive  experience that he couldn't distinguish from reality and allowed him to move his limbs and have some form of tactile feedback?  Whaatttttt?  And not long after that my friend and I (correctly) guess the girl wasn't real and only existed in a computer.  Which even *that* didn't make sense.

And I was honestly expecting a bit more of a "pay off" or connection between her story and his real-world story.  That this incredible, unworldly, impossible to exist, 20-ghz chip his company was struggling to sell could be used on the computer that housed Julie's essence to make her existence more stable. Which, I get that she was rich so it was probably easy to achieve, but you'd think in his research he would have found the server/computer she had set-up somewhere to contain her essence and operate it. I mean, she had to buy-out something somewhere to have this, linking her name and such to it.  So why couldn't he find this during all of his searching? Certainly it's on some public record somewhere.

I learned that apparently Nguyen loves my home city of San Francisco yet still has no freaking clue that people don't work in Silicon Valley and live here - it's always been the other way around. Of course, the whole VR thing kind of confuses things - though it does seem to make it look like Jack actually lives in San Francisco and works 100 or more miles away.

I would love if he made a movie in Downtown Detroit. I think it would be a great pair. His directing and writing skills vs the total craphole that is Detroit.

Wow, this riff was such a pleasant surprise.

I learned (or, rather, was persuaded) that Birdemic is a bona fide effort.  I had always been suspicious that it was intentionally made to become a bad "cult classic" instead of naturally becoming one through grassroots popularity like The Room or Troll 2.

But here is another movie by the same director with the same style and production values, which doesn't feel artificial at all.  In fact, it has a heartfelt story to tell, which I cared about more than most hollywood plots.  I can't point to any substantive difference between this and Birdemic except the SFX.  Bad CGI really can ruin everything, even campy fun.

It would have been just as funny if they had done Birdemic with superimposed video of cheap puppets. Not sure it would have made that movie better, though.

Everything I saw/read/heard about James Nguyen before watching Birdemic told me it was a genuine "effort" at making a movie. It is, afterall, pretty hard to intentionally make a bad movie that'll become a classic, usually such effort show through because the attempts are to hard and come out loud and clear.  To pull it off, Nguyen would have to be a brilliant director and all of the background info on the production revealed that the project was plagued with problems and Nguyen genuinely was trying to make a movie that "meant something."

Birdemic 2, however, is another matter altogether and is an attempt to make a "good bad movie" on purpose and it really, really shows.

When I saw this was something he made before Birdemic, I knew I was in for a treat.

I learned that it took him 3 months to think of simply googling her name. And that when he did, her obituary wasn't one of the first things that came up.

And more recently I learned tnere is an effort being made to do Birdemic 3.

I learned that James Nguyen still loves round numbers.

I learned that the big shots in charge of placing huge microchip orders still work out of dismal, undecorated cubicles.

I learned that sometimes, when James Nguyen claims that Tippi Hedren is in his movie, he is telling the truth.

I learned that you can go on a date to a 1920s themed party in which, apparently, you and your date are the only attendees.

I learned that you can date a girl for 3 months, know virtually nothing about her, but still fall madly in love.
