Nightmare at Noon might sound like what happens a few hours after trying items from Taco Bell's breakfast menu, but in fact it's a movie! A totally 80s movie that reunites two stars from our VOD release
Mutant: the terrifyingly-faced Wings Hauser and his gruff, permanently drunk pal, Bo Hopkins. And, weirdly enough, they are once again facing off against a rural town full of people turned into ghouls by environmental contamination. But whereas Wings played a young whiny sarcastic yuppie in Mutant, this time he's...a slightly older whiny sarcastic yuppie. And while Bo played a small town sheriff in
Mutant, this time he's...a cop who lost his job for doing the right thing. But it's not a sequel! Somehow! Basically, they took what made
Mutant such a good movie (nothing), threw in George Kennedy (yes, that George Kennedy), some cleavage (not George Kennedy's) and a ridiculously long helicopter chase that was probably pulled from an Airwolf rerun, shook it all up and poured a big glass of
Nightmare at Noon!
It's worth noting that this movie is also known by another title,
Death Street U.S.A. (kinda like how
Mutant also had another name,
Night Shadows). It's also worth noting, according to the movie itself, that Wings Hauser's character loves croissants, but HATES them when they're microwaved. Might we fixate on this bizarre character detail? Oh, we might. We just might.
Help Mike, Kevin and Bill stuff croissants into a microwave until Wings drops to his knees in despair at this
Nightmare at Noon!

Yay!
For reasons out of my control I may miss Birdemic live. This could be most needed succor.
I will definitely miss Birdemic live, so this is a suitable replacement.
I'll have to wait till the weekend to watch this one :-[
George Kennedy?! I wonder if this is around the same time that he played Bo Derek's pervy old manservant in Bolero. I think this might be the better film.
George Kennedy, Bo Hopkins, that guy from Mutant...this film is just reeking of a certain.....what those guys reek of....
Okay, where the hell did the helicopters come from? Better yet, where did the producers find an attack helicopter? For that matter, where did the characters find one. And who's flying it??

Any news on this? I'm as mystified as the next person. And I want answers, Mcoy! I want them now!
Bo had instructed Mullet DJ to get contact to outside help. Mullet-Man obviously was successful. Albino Man.... had a helicopter... for some reason. He just never really needed or used it until the end of the movie... for some reason.
And we had a long helicopter chase and no "Airwolf" joke? For shame, Guys.
Really liked the 2 A-Team vans.. Yet that wasn't mentioned either as a riff :-[

Man, I forgot about that DJ. Makes sense. I've had friends who are DJs. The ability to call in an attack helicopter...why didn't I think of that?

Well in the mumbled instructions given to the DJ were to contact some guy and tell him something, so yeah, that covers it.
And the pilot of the attack helicopter must have had the same amazing tracking skills as our heroes, flying straight to the fight with the albino the same way our heroes rode their horses right to the black van that was out in the middle of nowhere.
Oh, and that was NOT an attack helicopter, looked like a standard helicopter that you see TV stations using with some props bolted onto it. Still pretty impressive for a low budget film, considering they needed a 3rd helicopter for the camera. At least I think they did, I think there were scenes with both choppers in the chase shown at the same time.

Yeah, give credit where credit is due: that helicopter chase scene was pretty impressive, especialyy considering the quality of the film it was in.
The whole time I was just worried about them crashing into the magnificent arches in that park. I wonder if the park service was sweating off camera.
Yeah. the helicopter chase actually WAS pretty impressive, in spite of them blowing up random parked junker cars in the middle of the desert. The chase vehicle, however, was another helicopter for at least some of the wider shots which at sometimes appeared to be being filmed from INSIDE the helicopter cabin as it looked like there was glare from the window. I don't think the "radio chatter" made much sense, at one point both helicopters are in pursuit and the army helicopter is almost directly behind the black one. In the radio chatter we hear someone say "I'm at your 3 O'Clock." Which no one is at ANYONE'S 3 O'Clock unless the chase helicopter for filming was actually in the pursuit (and we never saw it) and the other army helicopter was talking to it. Which... may be the case. Maybe the radio chatter was the actual radio inside the chase helicopter?

Well, it looked vaguely Apache-ish to me. Yeah, there's no way the Army would give them an actual AH-64. But they did a credible job of faking it.
And yeah, I was thinking the same thing: Did they really have enough money to rent two helicopters fighting each other AND a third one to film it? For a scene that made absolutely to sense!?
I forget the exact quote, but: "Those are some pretty lights, are you making a movie?"
Because if there's one thing a hillbilly can't recognize, it's a gun.

This reminds me: thug scientist introduces a virus(?) (oh. we TOTALLY need a NAN/Birdemic mashup!) that makes every male redneck shoot at anything that moves. And the women take the sensible route and viciously stabby stab the people they care about. So, what's your point, LBJ? No point.
Does anyone know what the original song (or sample of a style of song) is that they're riffing on when Kevin sings, "His name was Bo... He had a rifle and a shady past / Probably a drinking problem, we're not really sure / But he was Bo... [etc.]"?
It sounds familiar, but it's really hard to Google for "that song that sounds kinda like that Western-style song I heard that one time..."
Since there's no ranking thread (that I could see), I give this a 7.5. Good fun riff, but not fantastical or anything. I reeeally enjoyed Kevin's songs, so whoever wrote those needs to do more writing in the riffs IMO.
Dumb-ass movie, fun riff. I'm ready for the next one now.
