Was it Over the Top ENOUGH? Discuss!
Hey, congrats on the "no pain" thing, TP!
I really enjoyed it, thought it was quite a strong solo riff. I got a good giggle out of the first sync line being in the opening song. DA got a few lines in, hopefully not too many for the DA haters, lol.
Remember this is Double Elimination!
Goodbye Rambo. Cobra. Hawks. Hawk!
He might have hurt himself if not for his Tom Wolfe pants!
This one had a lot of moments that had me in tears. And a Warrior of the Lost World shout-out! Mike was on fire with the riffs as well; it had the riff-pace of a Mike/Kevin or Mike/Kevin/Bill experience. Definitely one of my favorites.
Oh yeah I meant to mention the MST3K reference and the Troll 2 reference for good measure.
Mike did a good job going solo this time.
Mike was really in top form.
This was pretty amazing...
...remember, unlike arm-wrestling, life is not a double elimination tournament.

Wait, you mean the match at the end was double elimination? Huh. The movie did not make that very clear.
Yeah, if only they had said it more, they wouldn't have forgotten at the end....
i didnt buy this rifftrax, but im curious what MST and Troll 2 riffs he made.
The annoying kid looks just like young Maggie in 'The Thorn Birds".

The truck became MEGAWEAPON and the kid needed more baseball penants in his room (really his mothers very effeminate room).
There's something I don't understand about the movie. Hawk(s) lost an arm wrestling match but he was still in the tournament and won it. What gives? I don't remember this being explained at all.
I know, it was weird, almost like it was a double elimination tournament, but I am not sure what the rules were.
Now now, the movie can't tell us everything can it?
No, it's only natural that some stuff is cut for time.
Gees, I think every moron knows that all arm wrestling tournaments are double elimination. Do they have to explain gravity to you guys too?
When my dad and I reconnected and his livelyhood was on the line, he was all caught up in thumb wrestling. Those are some tough guys on that circuit. He crossed the defending champ and nearly lost his life for it but they decided to take it to the table. It's single elimination, balls to the wall stuff though. Those thumb wrestlers don't joke around like the arm wrestling circuit. Needless to say, he lost his match and I haven't spoken to him since.
[and just in case it needs to be explained, that was sarcasm]
I came in with semi-low expectations, as I wasn't sure how he'd cope with going back to just himself, but wow. That was just an excellent job all the way through, and I was very pleased with the Disembodio(s) inter-cuts. Very well done.
Definitely a must-buy.

This one was right up there with Road House. Excellent solo riff all around.
Hawk(s) was a terrible parent. First, he sold drugs or killed people or something, and skipped out when the kid and his mom. Then, he let's the kid drive an 18-wheeler. Think of the catastrophe that could have caused if the damn thing jackknifed. And another thing, during that scene, he was trying to prove that the kid was being a wise ass and that driving a truck wasn't as easy as he thought it was. But the frigging kid learned how to drive it in about three minutes. So how did Hawk(s) make his point?
Second, he didn't even tell the kid his mother was dying in the hospital.
Third, when Hawk(s) drove the truck through the front door of the mansion, how did he know that the kid or a maid or something wasn't standing there?
It's hard to prove parental competency when you've just squished the kid under your truck tires. :speechless:
But other than that, he was a great dad who deserved the kid at the end, even though there was no reason for the grandad to sign over custody.
We don't know why Hawk left. But I am sure that the Grandfather (who could very well have been a large part of the reason) would have been only too happy to tell the kid all sorts of stories about why. Plus they thought she was just in hospital for surgery, had he known she was dying I am sure he probably would have driven day and night to get there .
no use trying to analyze the gaping holes that stallone left in the plot...

If the movie had earned more, no doubt we would have been given the deleted scenes on the DVD that would explain all the plot holes. Maybe even Stallone complaining about the script doctors that removed subtle character moments and plot devices. :P
Haha, yep.
I think Mike was dead on...
"yeah, stallone was involved in the screenplay in that he said 'yeah, I wanna do a movie about armwrestling....it can have a kid too"
I also loved Mike singing a line from Band-Aid: "And there'll be no snow in Africa at Christmas time this year..."

yes definitely one of those fun unexpected moments.
Wow! I think every Mike solo effort needs to be a cheesy '80s movie from now on. :^) The riffs were on spot and the movie was rediculous. But I think the best part was that the movie made no effort to resolve itself. It cut straight to resolution without finishing the conflict.
To quote one of my fav Crossroads riffs, "Don't know how to end your scene? Just end it!"

Haha, you're right...I gues Loggia just decided that "hey, he won the tournament, that must mean he's a capable father; I suppose I'll drop the charges and let him have my Grandson"

And really, after spending just 90 minutes with that little brat, wouldn't you give him away to the first truck driver with anger issues you ran into also?
I just read that Bull died in 2003.
RIP Bull and his feces-based insults.
His soul went...over the top... :'(
I liked this one. When Mike started talking about how a monkey should be in the film, it made a lot of sense. Tons of 80s movies seemed to have monkeys in them for some reason. I can't believe the movie seemed to side with Stallone's character over the grandfather. Yeah, the kid would have a much better life with a usually down-on-his-luck trucker with no permanent home than his rich and settled grandfather. Whatever, 80s movie.
I thought this was pretty solid for a solo-riffer trax.
My Take (http://www.rifftraxfan.com) is now posted (with a free preview)
mike does a damn good sly impersonation
Uh-oh, looks like Lincoln Hawk/s was caught with 'roids in Australia.
I wonder if they will strip him of his arm wrestling title of 20 years ago?
I don't think he'd have been the only one on steroids in that movie...
I thought the whole scene with Stallone walking away from the gate at Robert Loggia's mansion was hilarious. The whole, I'll just leave without a fuss dialog ending with "Ha ha I fooled you!"
Plus Disembaudio had a pretty good line when he said that the relationship between Stallone and his son was going to be rocky.
You guys are gonna be mad at me, but...
I wasn't all that impressed with this riff. Oh I laughed plenty, but it wasn't nearly as strong as the others. The movie basically riffed itself, and Mike was merely pointing out all its incompetencies. I found myself agreeing with Mike the whole time, rather than holding my sides from the amazing comedic revelations being bestowed upon me.
I felt it was more along the lines of The Fifth Element or X-Men.
*don't hurt me...
Hmm...I'd probably disagree...yes the movie does almost riff itself, but Road House is even worse in that regard. When your villains shout out random lines like "I used to F#%@ guys like you in prison," how can you not automatically laugh?
My favorite riff from this one: "thanks to this movie, I now know what Stallone looks like when he's constipated."
And I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet, what with all the references to it being a double-elimination tournament, but it shouldn't have been over. Hawk beat Bull for his first loss in five years, ok. But then they would have been even in the tournament with one loss each. There should have been one more match! It's a draw! (Or did the ref say 1 fall only for the finals?)
(Or did Mike's overabundance of riffs on the double-elimination rule establish all that and I'm just a rube for stating the bloody obvious?)

But even if he had to face Bull again and didn't win the second bout, he'd still be a winner in our hearts! :'(
One of my favorite riffs was when Hawk was driving along by himself in the truck, and he's pumping iron, and Mike says something like "the first hybrid cars that were half gas-powered, half Stallone-powered were wildly unsuccessful". I thought that was a very clever riff.
Here's something I don't get: Why did Michael's mom hide the card Hawk(s) sent to him all those years, then all out of the blue she wants them two to bond or something.
My favorite riff was: "This is the closet kid. Get use to it."

I wondered that too. I thought the grandfather would have been the one to hide/destroy them but the mom had them. That makes no sense.
I still want to know why exactly the grandfather gives up after Hawk wins at arm wrestling...

Who would of thought it was a tough decision. I bet there was a big battle about it off set, and then half the cast said "I'm going to call him hawks" and the other half said "I'm going to call him hawk" and then the two sides never made up....then Loggia switch sides mid-movie...
...the late 80's were brutal man...
Maybe every time they called Hawk "Hawks" they were trying to describe something which Hawk possessed, but it was edited later due to...um.....ok fine. It's because the movie sucked. :-",

I'm telling you, major in-production fight... it went down bad...or maybe they just changed their minds halfway through filming...
Maybe he was from the South. We add Ss to almost everything. "I'm going to the Walmarts." for example.
Weird southern accent though.
Maybe there's a hidden message in the movie that can be found by comparing scenes where he's Hawk to scenes where he's Hawks. I'll bet it's a cleverly encoded ransom message. Pity it's a ransom message from the '80s. :^) Or MAYBE he was cloned and his clone goes by Hawks to distinguish himself. Or maybe they're refering to the entire Hawk Family: The Hawks..

sorry, had an extreme sarcasm moment, as in aeon flux's CGI and special effects were so cheap that over the top's sweaty arm wrestling scenes looked state of the art. Aeon Flux, at least the city views, seemed like something the history channel would throw together for a show on roman history. Looked cheap.

I read this AP story headline this morning and, I know this is sad, but....... well........ if this does not make you laugh imagining an arm wrestling themed memorial service, then I dont know what to say.
NASSAU, Bahamas - Anna Nicole Smith will be buried in a custom-made gown next to her 20-year-old son following an "over the top" memorial service with a tightly controlled guest list, said a friend helping to organize the memorial.
Hehe. Get your elbows on the casket. It's time for some arm wrestling! :^)
This funeral will be double elimination. If you O.D. once, you still have another chance. ;)

well, the version i saw, the contest at the end wasn't double-elimination, so maybe that explains it.
Devil, I just watched it this weekend and I noticed that the comment of when to start the track was off. As I recall they said to start it when the "production" credit dropped, but it was actually when the "film" credit dropped. Fortunately I was paying attention for the name rather than which type of credit it was so I synched it up right away, but it's one of those things that could easily confuse people.
And remember, this is a double elimination Rifftrax. If you do not synch it you will have one more opportunity to do it.
so.... did anybody happen to catch the big arm-wrestling tournament on espn 2 a couple of days ago? i was holing up in a hotel room and totally bored and i watched it for a couple of hours. it was... pretty cool! there's a bunch of rules and fouls they don't have in the movie, like referee grips and elbow fouls. and players with a certain playing style are called "hookers." arm-wrestlers are called "pullers," although they are most definitely and explicitly pushing.
as any viewer of sidehackers knows, what any sport needs most is good terminology. if they'd worked some of this stuff into over the top it'd have been a ten times better movie. which means it would never have gotten riffed, which means i would never have seen it. ;D
Being perpetually behind in my rifftrax viewing, I just got around to this one. I thought this was another great solo Mike effort. I think the solo efforts have a certain focus that sometimes is missing when two or more are in the booth. I like all the guest riffer work, but sometimes they tend to get a little "talky" and force the "conversation" pieces that usually fall flat for me. When Mike is by himself, it's just the movie and the riffs... distilled essence of the form.. if you will.
These are my favorite subject movies... the ones that are unintentional goofy fun before riffing is involved. We need more movies like this... when you can kick back and have fun with it almost in spite of Mike and not because of him. That's not to say I would have sought out Over The Top without the help of rifftrax... but I wouldn't actively avoid it along the lines of Wicker Man or Aeon Flux. Some movies need riffing just to be bearable and some just need a little frosting on top. I always prefer it when Mike and company are just helping things out as opposed to full resuscitation.
Mike nailed a pretty impressive amount of real zingers and I was rolling for good stretches. While maybe not the same consistency as Roadhouse, this is easily Mike's second best solo effort and it stacks up well against any others. In the great tradition of Gary Busey, the bronzed visage that is Robert Loggia provides more supporting actor fun than should be allowed. Throw in a kid actor who walks circles around Stallone at every opportunity and "Meet Me Halfway (Across the Sky)" tugging at the heartstrings... this one delivers at both the movie and riff level. Stupid fun from beginning to end. 8/10
