I watched this movie yesterday (without the riffing) and didn't think it was too bad for a Star Trek movie.
I'm curious to see what kind of spin "the guys" put on it.

gammer eagerly awaits the release of the rifftrax

You think you're eager, I'm more eager than a backed-up salmon at the head of the stream in the middle of spawning season.

Sorry. Little bit of Dan Rather there.

I bought the region one version, so there shouldn't be any problems with my computer this time (it's hard coded to Region One, unless I use VLC player which ignores all that stuff).

Not yet, the volume on the website might be overloading things as the CHECKOUT option just sits there and spins.   But I can wait until tomorrow morning.   My DVD came in the mail today so I can wait....... I can wait......... I can wait.........

LOVED this Rifftrax. Kept me laughing all throughout, and this Trek movie was better than V, I thought. Also, thanks to my recent discovery of Schnappi, I'm in on an in-joke. :^)

Even though I think Star Trek VI is at the very least a good movie, I still enjoyed the rifftrax quite a lot. What I don't understand is how they can be so critical of this movie. I mean they need to take into consideration that Paramount was drowning in red ink at the time from losing money on Godfather III, Days of thunder, Lethal weapon 3. Therefore they only had a $30 million dollar budget on Star Trek VI. Sad I know, but let's face it, no movie is 100% perfect no matter what the script is and who is in it. Well... no, I think The Empire Strikes Back is the only perfect film in existence.

Were they extra rough on it or something? Even the best movies inspire some fun-poking and elbow-jabs. I would gleefully riff the hell out of some of my favorite media.

It was AWESOME. New favorite. I loved all the old Star Trek references, too. The traanya, the green alien woman.

I loved the whole "This scene needs a Gorn or one of those cookie faced guys." :D

Well, after months and months of having Matrix as my favorite Rifftrax, I finally have a replacement. The guys did an AWESOME job on this one, plus I dig the movie too (my third favorite ST movie). I was laughing the entire time, nearly without stopping once for breath.

Favorite line: "Bacon? You're not Bacon!!!!"

The discussion on ice-fishing was my favorite.  The FilmCrew could have been extras in "Fargo" with those accents.   It was like a trip back to a Sven and Ollie joke as filmed by Ingmar Bergman. "When you're out of slits, you're out of pier."

...

I actually saw this movie in theater the night before it was released, and i really liked it... still do. The riffs were great though. But why go back to the Star Trek well so soon? My little theory involves a mix-up between Mike and Kevin on just which film Kevin was supposed to actually watch when preparing for ST5. I picture him showing up in San Diego with pages of jokes for the wrong film... but ultimately deciding that they were just too good to throw away!~ Star Trek VI: Jokes From The Back Burner! ;D

Anyway.... all black-helicopter (spaceship?) conspiracy theories aside, i think this is the best project to feature all three guys, and it's certainly one of my favorite Rifftrax in awhile~ I love it when the guys sound like they're cracking themselves up in the studio. They were definitely cracking me up! I was home alone and getting over the flu, but laughed out loud quite a few times~

Also this Rifftrax marks the maiden voyage of my new high-speed lightscribe DVD burner! Good times~

First off, I'd like to say thank you for saying the "Spaaaahk!!" joke the minute Shatner walks on screen! I know I'll do the same for the rest of my life!

I watched this trax with a group of friends, and not one of them laughed at any of the Schnappi jokes, so I guess they had no idea what it meant. I wanted to enlighten them, but I thought better of it. It's bad enough I forced them to watch Star Trek VI   ;)

This track was a lot of fun, but not as good as the best ones. Still, it had all three riffers, which makes it special in my book.  :)

Hm, I think there was a bit of a quality control failure on this one - a lot of stuff was said seemingly just to fill a silence, with no consideration for whether it was actually funny or not. Lots of puns, non-sequiturs, and rather nasty personal attacks on the actors (so, you have no love for William Shatner, we get it). A few of the remarks were among the lamest I've ever encountered in MST3K/RiffTrax history (that honour might go to the "pretending my husband's not gay" remark about Iman - very poor indeed).

I guess the problem might be that, unlike Star Trek 5, 6 is a pretty decent movie. It was jarring for them to desperately keep insisting the movie's a dog when, patently, it's not. It seems a bit senseless to riff it when there are many perfectly awful Michael Bay and Joel Schumacher movies out there going criminally unriffed.

;D Sorry, I guess I did lash out a bit in my disappointment; my expectations for a Mike/Kevin/Bill triple-header are always stupidly high. Being a geek, I guess I'm given to Comic Book Guy "Worst Episode Evurrr!"-style outbursts.

Still, out of all the RiffTrax released so far, only 2 have been a let down for me, so that's a pretty damn excellent hit ratio.

My theory:

Since this was a marginally better movie than Star Trek V, the guys spent more time mocking the worn-out original cast than they did in Star Trek V.  Therefore, I think that complaints from people who didn't like the riffing on Star Trek VI will come from people who are particular fans of Star Trek.

Luckily, I'm not one of them.  I thought it was hilarious.  Also, that's the greatest number of times I've typed "Star Trek" within 3 minutes in my entire life.

Well I'm a pretty big fan of the Original Series, but not like a nerd-level fan. I actually love to laugh at all the corny things in the episode, like the Big-Head Talosians and Spock frollicking on Omicron-Seti III. I know that Mike feels the same way too, and so that is what makes this rifftrax all the better. :)

I'll need to revisit this one again before making my final judgement, but I didn't get as many laughs from this one as I did from STV. I still thought it was funny overall, much better than Battlefield Earth as far as the "all three riffers" ones I've seen. I just thought that a good amount of the retread material on the cast members fell flat. While I have yet to grow tired of the "Spaaaahhhck" riffs for Shatner, I just didn't get many laughs from their return trips to the Scotty / Sulu / Chekhov material.

I'm also getting increasingly irked by the "movie snob" feel that these guys are falling into. While I don't think any Trek movies are cinematic masterpieces, I don't think they are suicide inducing torture sessions either. The repeated bashing of a competent, relatively harmless sci-fi franchise flick just comes across as petty. On more than one occasion I thought "Jesus, get over yourselves you damn self-important twits... it's a freaking TREK movie, what did you expect?". While I did get very annoyed at the proceedings at various points, they always managed to redeem themselves with a consistent pace of truly funny riffs. Overall, I'll give it a 3.5 outta 5.

I'm in agreement with most of what you're saying here, but I think that the difference in quality between STV and STVI is pretty huge, movie-wise.  I can't believe they are in the same franchise together, let alone be right next to each other in the franchise.  STV is turd of a movie, and the bashing of the film itself is warranted.  STVI, in comparison, is a pretty good movie, a competent and exciting sci-fi flick...and simultaneously perfect rifftrax fodder.  I do cringe a little bit when they bash the film itself, and feel they should stick to making fun of the characters, dialogue, sets, etc.  It must be that these guys just don't like Star Trek, period.  Which is fine I guess.

This was a great rifftrax though, I laughed a lot.  And chalk up yet another rifftrax with a shout out to Wisconsin.  I think my favorite riff was when Bones says, "I don't know his anatomy!" and Kevin chimes in with "well what are you fartin' around with him for?!"

Something I also noticed is that it seemed like Bill isn't as big as a Star Trek fan as Mike and Kevin are. While Mike and Kevin were making all the hilarious Star Trek references, Bill was making jokes about Uranus. His Scotty impersonation too was a little, eh...

For the next Star Trek movie, if there is one, I would love to see Trace, Kevin, and Mike do it, because it makes it all the more fun when you know that they are real Star Trek fans. Just look at season 5-7 of Mst3k and spot how many Star Trek gags there are.
Title: Re: Thoughts??
Post by: Nunyerbiz on February 19, 2007, 10:26:48 AM
First, I agree with you 100%. STV is a turd, STVI is competent.

I don't necessarily have an issue with them bashing this or any other movie. I just think it can go from hilarious ("Shatner ruins the franchise!") to cringe-inducing fairly quickly. There just seems to be an air of misplaced self-righteous indignation to a lot of these rifftrax which just isn't funny to me. A lot of these comments are not being played off as a joke, I truly think these guys hate just about every movie they rifftrack. That's all fine and dandy I guess, but I find it ironic that they steer towards movies that "take themselves too seriously" and then turn around and do the exact same thing with their increasingly indignant tone.

Yeah, the direct jabs at the incompetency of the filmmakers and actors do seem a bit...mean at times.  Movies like Troll 2 deserve those types of comments, but I think stuff like The Matrix and Star Trek VI don't deserve those types of comments.  But, I usually give them the benefit of the doubt and assume it's just good natured ribbing.  The Rifftrax are definitely funnier when they're cracking "jokes", and not simply "bashing" the film itself.

I guess it's better just to go in without being a "Star Trek" fan, as I do, because the movies all look lousy to me and I don't particularly care which one is lousier than the other. I think they all deserve everything the guys throw at them and more.

Haha, welcome to the discussion; I couldn't agree more. I just get a kick out of how everyone defends these as great works of art...

I don't think anyone has said these were anything like great works of art.  But you're missing my point.  The discussion is about the difference between making a particularily funny joke, observation, or impression....as opposed to just saying "wow, this movie sucks!"  Anyone can say something like that, so I expect the wit that comes with Rifftrax to be a bit more sharp.  And it is, for the most part.  I just don't like it when they use that particular crutch.

I think this was discussed to death when the Phantom Menace trax came out, so I'll shut up about it now.

Something like, "Turn up your volumes at home. This scene is this movie's guitar solo!"

No, I just checked to make sure.  I'm referring to when the Balrog first appears, and Mike says "Ah, There he is, coolest scene in the whole movie right there."  I thought that was very gracious (and unexpected) of him.

I will agree with Mr. Smilin' Jack, you missed the point. I am not defending Star Trek VI as a work of art, in fact in one of my original replies to this thread I said as much. "I don't think any Trek movies are cinematic masterpieces" was my exact quote. My issue is quite the opposite. Mike and crew are the ones treating these movies as if they EXPECT them to be works of art. I don't find it particularly amusing when they go "elistist", if you will, and make jabs based on some bizarre quality standard that they themselves artificially inflated.

With something like Phantom Menace, I gave them MUCH more slack as it was a super-hyped movie that completely failed to meet every concievable expectation short of box office. While I think they went a little overboard at times in that one, it deserved something that slanted more towards mean-spirited. Star Trek VI was a freakin fluff piece... the only way it could have been more fluff is if they introduced the Care Bears as an evil alien race. The filmmakers weren't trying to sweep at Oscar or shift the paradigm of filmmaking as we know it. Many of the "meaner" rifftrax comments this time around seemed incongruous for such a lightweight movie. They were being petty.

I guess they aren't going to change. I've never understood the general animosity towards movies around here and I guess I never will. Apparently the riffers share this animosity and sometimes go overboard to revel in it. I don't watch movies because I hate them and I can have a good enough time with most movies I watch. Of course there are exceptions. I think Dr. Moreau, xXx, Battlefield Earth and a few others wholeheartedly deserve to be loathed. Even in jest, if you start throwing suicide references around in regards to something as innocuous as Trek VI... the joke is lost on me. You're just being a self-absorbed ninny.
Title: Re: Thoughts??

Of course we all have our own particular types of riffs that we prefer, and we all like certain RiffTraxes better than others. But I don't think the guys are being particularly snobbish or self-righteous or elitist or mean with any of them. (If I thought they were, believe me, I'd join you guys in calling them on it. I LOATHE snobbery.) They just bash movies because it's what they do and it's what they've always done, starting with the MST3K era. I really don't think they're saying, "This movie is not 'Gone with the Wind,' and it should have been 'Gone with the Wind,' so I will now proceed to tear it to shreds!" That's never been the way they operate, as far as I can tell. They're just taking things they think are silly or bad and making fun of them.

The guys hate, or just make fun of, lots of things I like (Rachael Ray, "Patch Adams," and Shania Twain come to mind -- yes, I know she can be weird, I just like her, okay?  ;D ) but I don't think they're being mean or snobbish about it. I think they just don't like those things. That's fine by me.
Title: Re: Thoughts??

Well, I'm not trying to blow this out of porportion or anything. I just think the discussion board is the place to talk about the things you and like and the things you don't like about the product. With this particular rifftrack, I do think they went 'snobby' on a number of occasions but it's a tiny fraction of the overall piece of work. I'm not denying that. I laughed ALOT more with Trek VI than I was annoyed with it. I have no issue making fun of things they thought were silly or bad. I do have an issue when they go out of their way to be mean-spirited against a completely harmless movie.

However, I do think they fell into your "Gone With The Wind" analogy with this one. Just because the movie had a character who quoted Shakespear didn't automatically remind me how a silly Sci-Fi franchise movie isn't as good as Shakespear... Apparently it did for Mike and that exchange definitely struck me a snobby. It's a pretty good stretch to suggest that the people responsible for Trek VI were trying to put themselves into the league of one of the greatest literary figures of the English language or that they ever imagined that anybody would suggest they were making such a comparison. Of course, Bill saved the day for me by diffusing such an inane comparison with his "tattoo magazine vs nachos" addition. Mentioning Shakespear and Trek VI in any head-to-head discussion is as crazy as tatoo mags and nachos battling it out for supremecy.

I see what you're saying, but then they've always had that policy of "Never show a good movie in the middle of your crappy movie" (as stated when what's-his-name started watching "Casablanca" in "Overdrawn at the Memory Bank"), which I think is pretty sensible. Of course they weren't SHOWING Shakespeare here, but the principle still applies. When you're showing people silly things, it's kind of shooting yourself in the foot to keep reminding them of great art.  :) At least, that's how I see it.
Title: Re: Thoughts??
Post by: Nunyerbiz on February 20, 2007, 08:56:43 AM
I will respectfully disagree in that the Overdrawn at the Memory Bank comparison is a pretty big stretch. In that movie they were completely aping Casablanca. A full half of the movie took place in some bizarre virtual reality version of Casablanca. They were forcing the comparison at every turn. In Trek VI, a character was using Shakespear quotes that were relevant to the goings on of the plot. They weren't jumping into the holodeck and reimaging "King Lear" or something.

Wow, step away from the boards for a sec and miss a heated debate...

I for one LIKE bad movies on occasion; I own my share of crappy action and sci-fi flicks out there, and often I think they're just fun to watch. Don't get me wrong, I still think that as far as meaningful entertainment goes, they're pretty bad. You could call that snobby if you wanted to, but I think we all recognize that just because a movie is entertaining doesn't make it a great film per se.

Star Trek is fun to riff because it does take itself so seriously, as do the fans, let the board show...
Title: Re: Thoughts??
Post by: Nunyerbiz on February 20, 2007, 09:37:31 AM
From the time they saved the whales, the original cast were pretty much lightweights that played up about as much lame comic relief as they did dramatic posturing. I'll give you the "so serious" tag for The Motion Pciture, Khan and Search for Spock... but if you thought The Undiscovered Country took itself too seriously, with a freaking Shatner vs Shatner fist fight being played for laughs.... I would wonder if you actually watched the movie to begin with.

Again, it's not about bad movie or good movie... making fun or not making fun. The issue that I have is when they aren't even attempting to make fun, they are simply being mean-spirited. There are movies that deserve such treatment and there are ones where such treatment just comes across as petty.

I agree the riff shouldn't be mean-spirited (see: SW Ep 1) but I haven't picked up any meanness in this one, or the previous Trek. It's treated as silly, and maybe that seems mean to the trekkies, but that's the point of Rifftrax. To make a movie look silly, right?

I bring up an admittedly small aspect of a few rifftrax that bothers me, only one of them related to Trek, and I'm simply dismissed as a trekkie who is taking things as a personal attack. I had no problem with anything they said in Trek V and I've stated a couple of times that I'm no great fan of any of the movies (apart from Khan).... but who needs critical thought and reading comprehension?

I retract everything I said. Mike and the gang are great and all these movies deserve everything they get! Broad generalizing is fun!

You hate Star Trek and dismissively regard 100% of its fans as drooling sycophants, unable to cast so much as a glance askance, much less view with a critical eye, ANYthing that Paramount chooses to slap the Star Trek label onto.

I understand completely that this is your opinion. Indeed, I don't think it's possible for anyone who has visited this forum even casually in the last six months NOT to know that's your opinion. And AS your opinion, it's your absolute right to express it, as you have done ad-fucking-nauseum.

However, there is a certain level of saturation one can reach, and when you constantly express the exact same opinion in pretty much the exact same way over and over, you run the very real risk of BELABORING THE POINT.

So, what I would say to you is: what else ya got? What you've offered on the subject of Star Trek so far has been rather long on juvenile insults, and rather short on thoughtful, substantive arguments.

I'm serious about this. I really would like to hear something new from you that bolsters your points. Is there anything behind the contemptuous sneer you've shown here, or are you content simply to sit back and feel superior?

Man, I shouldn't respond but I will. No, I normally don't prefer to wax philosophical where Star Trek is concerned. But believe it or not, I LIKE the orginial series, and have seen most of the episodes. But really, beyond a mild interest in an old sci-fi show, my emotions aren't linked to the series. When thinking about these movies, it dawned on me that most of them are silly; the latter seem to pander to Trekkies in a way that just makes me laugh, and most of them (perhaps II excepting) tend to serve as poor replacements to the TV show. I think this is true of most movies based off TV shows: they simply feel like long episodes. And if you don't have any particular attachment to the series, then you'd have a tough time considering them "great" movies.

That doesn't mean you can't enjoy them (well, maybe not V) but as someone who feels mostly ambivalent about their quality, I just stand slack-jawed at the people who assume that I somehow need to love these things...

THAT's a reasonable statement of opinion on your part, macleod. And that I don't have any issue with; in fact, I even agree with some of it.

MY problem comes with what appears to be your corollary: the blanket assumption that anyone who argues with your assessment of Star Trek, or defends anything Trek-related, is somehow making the statement that anything with the Star Trek label on it is inherently good and wonderful, and that you're insane for not liking it. In this forum at least, I haven't seen anybody making that statement, although you've been acting as if EVERYBODY is making it.

Granted, I don't know you personally (you're probably a decent enough fellow); I can only go by what you've written. If you feel I'm misrepresenting your position, please let me know.

Khan is the only Trek movie that I would consider "good", just because it had a great over-the-top Montalban and a great over-the-top Shatner (before he turned his particular gift as an actor into a self-parody). I also did enjoy a few of the other even numbered ones. I thought The Motion Picture was decent, but yes... they were definitely trying too hard. It was if they made a conscious decision to shake off any notion of the inherent 60's campiness of the original series by being as dour and pretentious as possible. Great story for the forty minutes and change needed for the series... dunno about padding it to over two hours.

There is an intrinsic value to movies that has nothing to do with any combination of their production aspects. The "value of the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts" argument, if you will. For example, I will not argue that Commando and Bloodsport are awful movies when looking at any aspect of production (acting, direction, screenwriting, etc). Come to think of it, I doubt anybody would give me an argument even if I sought one out. That said, I find both movies to be perfectly entertaining.

The REAL value of a movie is found in its entertainment value (That IS what movies are made to do, right?) and good acting, deep scripting, great dialogue, great special effects, and compelling story are all icing. They can make it better, but they are not necessary to make a good cake, nor do they qualify as cake if that's all you have. There's that intangible quality to a movie that transcends everything else and comes out as pure entertainment whether other elements fail or not.

Take Ghost Rider. Just about every positive review I've scene has all been to the tune of, "The acting was horrible and the dialogue was cheesy, but I had fun watching it!" Ghost Rider is cake without the icing, and sometimes that makes for some darn good cake. Maybe it even means that the cake is all the better because it can stand on its own without the icing. :^)

Yeah, there's truth in all that, but I suppose I tend to differentiate between "entertaining" and "good"...I mean, that's just my take...

But I have to disagree...I can't even call "commando" entertaining...

I think entertaining are those movies that FX plays on weekend afternoons, but commando still makes me cringe thinking about it. I think the first time didn't hurt so bad, but afterwards...

That said, bloodsport is entertaining as all get out...and if you like more of that "the quest" has the exact same Damme plotline ;D

Running Man is another good cheeseball Arnold flick, but I still prefer Commando by a slight margin.

Back to topic...

Maybe I'm just 9 years old inside or something, but one of the riffs that made my laugh very, very hard was:

"Lick me."

"Lick me."

"TAKE TURNS licking me."

For me, this track further bolstered my theory that Bill is one of MST3K's most underrated talents.  His inflection and timing are subtly fantastic.  He's a scalpel; Kevin is an anvil plummeting from the sky.  (This is not a slam on Kevin, mind you, merely a description of his style.  Some jokes require an anvil.)  And Mike is the Outback-sized, comedically solid steak knife between the two.  I do believe this is why the many Sci-Fi era epis are among my favorites; the balance amongst the three is perfectly struck.

And finally:

Quote
I hit the floor laughing during the dueling shatners "Spaaaaaahk spaaaaaaaaaaaahk spaaaaaaaaaahk" and then when Kevin mimic'd Shatner actually doing it "SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHK"

Please help out a non-Trekkie here.  Once and for all, could someone please explain the "Spaaaaaaaahk" reference?

(Once I had to pause the whole shebang and have the following phone conversation with my fiance:

"Yes?"
"The Klingons are bad, right?"
"Right.  Well, mostly.  In Genera--"
"Okay, thank you.")

It's a goof on Shatner's overacting. There have been occasions when he says the word "Spock" and draws it out unnecessarily.

That said:

"KHAAAAAAAAANN!"

p.s. In the MST3K movie, the "Spaahhhk" joke is used to great effect.

I like that they treat it as kind of a personal in-joke between them; if it weren't for that, it might get a little old for me as well.

p.s. Although, now that I think about it, it's also a kind of shorthand meant to denote overacting.

As with STV, the volume of the background music got in the way at times, and unfortunately the delivery of everything seemed... just kinda obvious and really not witty. I dont think trying to bash a good movie helped either, and the "I'm going to kill myself" jokes have never been funny.

Well, not to provoke gbeenie again, but I'd hardly call it a "good" movie, but rather a "decent" Star-Trek film (which there aren't many).

But they have bashed a couple "good" movies so far (like Lord of the Rings), which produced hilarious results.

I also think the "I'm going to kill myself" jokes were very appropriate for battlefield earth...after watching the riff 3x, I feel the same way. Mike and co. had to watch the movie for like 40 hours to make the riff for it...soooo

I thought it was funny, as someone who had never watched star trek, I loved seeing the chick from sex in the city the dad from that 70's show and shatner puttin on the pounds.

However it was the most irritating synch up ever. I dont know what version I've got but my version seemed to be missing about 9minutes of in the middle of the movie. Took me about 25 minutes to find another synch up point and then it did it again right at the end of the movie. I've no freakin clue what happened. Besides that, the first 3 synchs were perfect, that's about it  :( Still a funny movie and the riffs I did here were very funny.

yeah I had read that, but this was weird, it wasnt like 3 second it really was more like 9 minutes. Maybe I got the shortest version.

I have too admit something, it was an experiment and this is why I dont know the version. I decided to watch it from Xbox live pay per view. They have all the star trek movies. I figured it would be neat to see if it synched. Well, it is neat, you download the whole movie and it plays it like a DVR. It synched perfectly, I had never had a movie have no drift at all. And then it all of a sudden went a screwy around the time the trial started. I couldnt get it synched till after the mining camp scene started. Maybe this is the same thing as in that thread, it just seemed like a long time, but I guess I cant be sure, without any programs like you guys use to reauthor.

In summary xbox live pay per view does work, but there's no guarantee on the version.

The entire subplot involving Admiral Cartwright and Rene Auberjonois' character (see? I'm not even enough of a Trekkie to remember his name) being in on the assassination plot is gone, for one thing. When the would-be assassin gets shot at the end ("You're not bacon!"), he's never unmasked, and no one asks why he's lying in a pool of non-Klingon blood.

I FINALLY got a hold of a copy of the movie at the local Blockbuster last night. Good stuff. I remember seeing Star Trek VI on TV a while back and not being able to think about anything other than the president calling someone a dumbass. Glad to see they picked up on it too. I was surprised that they pointed out that the Klingon judge was the same actor who played the dumb cracker in Giant Spider Invasion. Nice peice of  MST3K nostalgia. I could definitely see the resemblance once they mentioned it. I have to disagree with their assessment that GSI was a better movie, though. For me, ST VI is much easier to sit through than that cheeseheaded flop any day. I mean, come on, Shatner's hamminess is worth the whole crazy thing. Too bad David Warner got killed off so soon. They might have worked in some Delta Knights jokes if he'd stuck around longer.

Can't say that it does . . . of course, I just threw up in my mouth a little at reading that phrase. I'll be honest and say that of the "Blue Collar" guys, I find Ron White funny and even can laugh at Foxworthy and Engval from time to time, but Larry the Cable Guy just serves as a horrible reminder of what the hell is wrong with the South. Well, there is nothing particularly groundbreaking or taboo about a comic taking on a alternate persona / stagename as part of their schtick.... next revelation is going to be that he was never actually employed by any cable providers....

Also, the reason anybody actually LIKES Larry the Cable Guy is BECAUSE he's a cartoony character, not in spite of it. It was pretty much the same exact scenario with Dice Clay about 20 years ago.... they both realized that going on stage as somebody other than Dan Whitney or Andrew Silverstein could make them a lot more money...

I don't think Dice Clay and Larry the Cable guy are that comparable. Alter egos, maybe. But Dice never really had a catch phrase that he loved to cash in on, as far as I could tell. Nor did he immediately jump into every moneymaking market possible (See: "LTCG: Health Inspector", Blue Collar Comedy Tour(s), Blue Collar TV, that movie where he thinks he's in Iraq but it's really Mexico, his recent Comedy Central special.... and others).

I would also disagree with you that people like him because he's a caricature of the south. At a time when NASCAR is a popular sport among the middle class, and people use "Git-R-Done" in every day language (trust me on this one, I've heard it plenty of times) - I think it's more than just his pretending to be a character on stage. He's just a really good businessman, taking advantage of the popularity and moneymaking scam he's got going on.

He's even poking fun at it in the promos for the ComCen special. He basically points out that saying "Git-R-Done" is mandated in his contract.

I feel your pain, man. Back where I went to college (and some places near where I lived back east) you couldn't throw a rock without hitting a Nascar fan's pickup truck. If you listened closely you could hear them watching Blue Collar TV and buying tickets for the Cable Guy's next big show at the Critter Cafe.

As far as the Dice vs Larry comparisons... I think they fairly apt. Dice had a TON of cable specials in the early to mid 90s... and who can forget the Adventures of Ford Fairlane? I think the similarities stopped because the "Dice" alter-ego eventually generated enough of a politcal corectness backlash and forced him out of the spotlight. Larry is just a relatively tame bumpkin-type by comparison, so he hasn't had to worry about that aspect. Just because Dice didn't have an annoying catchphrase doesn't mean he didn't ride that persona for every dollar it could get him.... he'd still be pulling his "Litte Miss Muffet..." dirty limeric bullshit to this day if he could have gotten away with it.

QuoteI think it's more than just his pretending to be a character on stage. He's just a really good businessman, taking advantage of the popularity and moneymaking scam he's got going on.

So if you develop a successful comedy act that a shitload of people enjoy you are a manipulative scam artist only out for money?!? At the risk of sounding like a smartass, that's called free enterprise Comrade Torgos. I'm no fan of Larry the Cable Guy... I've chuckled at a few bits here and there from what I've seen of his standup... but he's not my cup of tea. That said, I don't understand this backlash against entertainers when they try to cash in as much as possible and strike while the iron is hot. Do you really think Dan Whitney toiled in countless comedy clubs during the 1980's to sit back and not make money when he found a winning formula? Certain people laugh at his stuff and pay him for it.... I'm failing to see a "moneymaking scam".

Risk? That was pretty much a guarantee. I got nothing against people making money, but Larry does the same thing stupid reality tv shows do. They cram it down our throats until we are forced to accept the stupidity. It's making people think it is alright to be a dumbass like Larry the Cable Guy, and that I cannot abide. If it was more of a satire, like Stephen Colbert, than I could understand. But it's mostly people going, "Dang! He's just like me!"

At a point in time where the United States is ranked 33rd for overall intelligence, we don't need Larry the Cable Guys to make sure we come in 40th next year.

I'm not saying what he's doing is good or bad for society or anything like that... but it is a market driven system. Who is this mysterious "they" that's cramming anything down our throats? If he wasn't getting ratings, he wouldn't be on TV. If you're making some analogy to the decline of western civilization... Larry the Cable Guy's popularity is a symptom... not the disease.

Apologies for being a smartass... I really meant it more as a joke and a silly excuse to drop a "Comrade"... and wasn't trying to be meanspirited or anything.

No need for apologies. It's all good man. The only point I'm making is that people will watch what you put in front of them. The perfect representation of what America watches is my father. He'll watch Grey's Anatomy, What About Brian, or whatever else is on after he gets home from work from 8pm to 11 pm.

I had once blocked out every channel on his cable box when I was visiting except for educational and thought stimulating channels like Discovery, History, A&E, The Science Channel, Nat Geo, PBS, Etc...
When he went to watch TV and asked me what happened, I told him the cable must be acting up. So from 8 to 11 pm he watched only those channels, and was actually pretty interested in them. Now if that could only be the case for the rest America, not to that degree necessarily, then it might very well help.

But when it is guaranteed that all people who have a tv and at least an antenna will get ABC,NBC,CBS, and FOX. And those networks have caught viewers in a vicious circle by making dumbed down shows available from 8 to 11pm, having the people watch them just cause they are there, taking that as liking them, and renewing the hell out of them. If you replaced most of the serial dramas with educational shows (not boring, but thought stimulating), you know what, they would watch them because they are there. For most people, TV or media is on the same level for them as eating.

If you put a can of day old dog food out in front of them, and nothing else. They'll say "Wait a second,"  but then they'll realize they're getting hungry and just end up eating it.

And thats what TV networks are doing now. They are essentially force feeding us day old dog food.

Wow. How's that for a rant?  :D  Go from Larry The Cable Guy to this. But to be honest, it is completely irrelevant. Except that LTCG is more like a week old dog turd we have to eat. ;)

I get what you're saying... I just look at it from the other perspective. I don't think it's the networks conspiring to dumb down America. They play what gets the ratings. To piggyback onto the food analogy... they aren't nonchalantly throwing out stale dog food and saying "eat this or starve"... they've been running a buffet for over a half century. As tastes and trends and fads come and go, they continually rearrange and substitute the shit behind the sneeze guards until only the popular items are left. If their customers want junk food, then that's what they are in business to provide. As anything else in a free market, there wouldn't be supply without demand (or at least you would eventually hit equilibrium).

Now you could make a case against many networks for continually going the easy route and playing to the lowest common denominator... but it's up to the public to reject that at some point. I think the crazy reality show boom is on the downside of the curve... and while it's been replaced by the "three pseudo-celebrities judge dumb talent contest" boom... it's at least kind of a step to the side instead of backwards. Also, you mentioned a good number of thought stimulating channels... and more and more of them seem to be coming around all the time as well. There's like 6 Discovery sub-channels now... where the hell were those when I was a kid and TV was supposedly smarter? Those wouldn't exist today if the country was already over the edge plummeting towards the cliffs of retard. Somebody out there is fighting the good fight.

I can think of a thousand reasons why there is nothing wrong with TV ... hell they're even bringing Futurama back on the air!

As in making new episodes? Now that would be sweet.

I think there's a lot wrong with TV and some right. Currently I don't have cable, but when I did, my family almost exclusively watched Discovery, A&E, History, and Cartoon Network. The kids would watch Nickelodean during the day and I'd watch some stuff on G4, Comedy Central, and Sci-Fi. Those channels are what's right . . . for the most part. Then there are channels like E!, MTV, VH1 (which used to be good, but now sucks donkey balls), and all the other brainless pop-culture crap they show on local network stations. So it's a mixed bag. I just choose to ignore the crap and watch what I like.

Meh, I can channel surf like nobodies business ... many of the channels you mentioned have shows I love... Discovery has CashCab, History has Modern Marvels, Comedy Central has South Park, Cartoon Network has adult swim (w/ new Futurama episodes coming soon), E! has my favorite show- THE SOUP)

anyway I'm tied to TV for life, if for no other reason than to watch sports or sports related TV ... plus if TV stops producing crap then what are my two favorite comedians (Joel Mchale and Mike Nelson gonna riff on every week!?)

No, it IS sweet. The first of 4 DVD movies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Futurama:_Bender%27s_Big_Score) should be released in December, later to be chopped up into episodes to air on Comedy Central.

I am glad that someone is doing that, but honestly, TV is too big of a thing to try and hope you'll make a difference in it. Maybe that's why Mike doesn't own a TV.

I am not saying completely get rid of everything except educational shows, but I'd like to see it balanced. But I know that what I like and what will happen are 2 completely different things.

Hell, if I was making buttloads of cash by putting crap on the air, I wouldn't want to sacrifice my income and livelihood just to hope that people will watch whatever you put in the 8 O'clock time slot.

I have to say that I do like The Soup . . . but that's because it pokes fun at all the pop crap that E! tends to pump out for the rest of the day.
