pol·ter·geist [ pølter geíst ] (plural pol·ter·geists) [Mid-19th century < German, "noisy ghost"] noun
Definition:
1) noisy spirit: a supposed supernatural spirit that reveals its presence by creating disturbances, e.g. by knocking over objects
2) 1982 Tobe Hooper-directed/Steven Spielberg-produced supernatural tale in which the Freeling Family deals with some seriously messed up/crappily-rendered spirits that ghost-nap their young daughter Carol Anne, who communicates with them through a television set (unlike text messaging, which is all the rage with the kids nowadays). A pre-Coach Craig T. Nelson and a pre-, um, Poltergeist JoBeth Williams star alongside Beatrice "I got an Oscar for a 5-min and 40 second performance" Straight, a creepy bedside clown, a ravenous tree, buckets and buckets of Star Wars product placement, and everyone's favorite lil' clairvoyant, Zelda Rubinstein. Running towards the light to provide RiffTrax commentary are Janet Varney and Cole Stratton, who previously underwhelmed you with their RiffTrax Presents of Dirty Dancing, Ghost and Footloose. We promise it will be more entertaining than The Bounty Hunter (since everything is). Which dictionary did this definition come out of, anyway? Am I right, people?

No hurry - I buy 'em as they come out but it can often take me months to get around to watching them. ;)

Yeah, but the seven hour director's cut? That's gonna be a mother to reauthor.
Is the link to "Get the DVD" at Amazon correct? Did y'all use the 25th Anniversary Edition "Digitally Restored and Remastered"?

There doesn't appear to be any time/scene differences between the releases, so it would just be a choice between a better quality picture.

This is like a perfect echo of the Red Dawn threads.
I just sent Cole a PM to see if he can clear it up.

Oooooo. Somebody is connected. And somebody is jealous.
QuoteRiffTrax sent us a timecoded copy, but I think all of the versions are exactly the same (my blu-ray copy matched up with what they sent me, which I think is the version on Netflix). Hope that helps!
I'm not sure if it does help...
The blu-rays came out after the 25th anniversary, so one would think they are the same print, right? ???
Cole's investigating further. ;)
Said he'd let us know if he hears anything definitive.

That
would make sense. But I believe the discrepancy happens at 11:45 when they are burying Tweety. I'm watching the riff old skool, so we will see.
Wait, so there is an actual problem - that's the first time you've offered that bit of info up - I thought you were asking before purchasing a DVD. :P

Grug. I love you to death buddy. But I've been here for a while, put together over 100 riffs, so I'm not going to go tossing crazy around unless I think it warranted. Which is why I probably don't belong on the internet.

I don't think there's anything crazy about making sure you're buying the right set before you buy it...

Okay.
I'll let everyone know which version we used in the morning. I got the disc from a netflix envelope, it said Poltergeist on it, didn't give it much more thought than that since there was only one cut of the film on the disc. Sorry.

I used to own the movie a while ago. I think that both versions have Carol Anne(sp?) on the front of them touching the television screen. But now I think the discrepancy happens at 9:00 or around there. Mr Torso is much better at this than I am.
It seems like there's almost always multiple versions of DVDs out there now for every movie, so I'm not surprised this is coming up again. It was brought up in the other thread too. The only other DVD, besides the 25th anniversary version, that's out is OOP, so it's unlikely that that version came from Netflix, unless they didn't upgrade their DVD versions of it when it came out along with the Blu-ray. I'm using the 25th anniversary edition - non Blu-ray, although I imagine it is exactly the same as the Blu.
Ok, we've got the 25th anniversary edition in the office...the one we linked to on the product page.

I haven't pinned it down exactly but by the fourth sync line (16:34) it is off and I have the 25th anniversary one.

Have you guys had any other support questions about this? I know that the bread and butter is riff player and ipod customers but at least two of us re-authorers have seen sync discrepancies when using the Warner Bros. 25th anniversary edition vs. the older MGM disc.
Is it possible that Netflix is using the new box art on the web but sending the old discs? This is what the WB 25th Anniversary edition version looks like:
(https://forum.rifftrax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi122.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fo255%2FMrTorso%2FForum%2520Posts%2FCameraDump04-17-10.jpg&hash=850545b9f70e15003ffaa4c497bd84318e59b94b)
Okay, just to be clear, which one is actually working well? The old one or the newer one?! I have a disc coming from Netflix... is that the right one??
I'm confused.

Don't be, it seems that the older version is syncing up with no problem, and the 25 anniversary has some drifting issues...which is odd because that is the version I was working with and it worked fine. Either way, you shouldn't worry because in the worst case scenario, I make a new mp3 with corrected times on Monday morning. So regardless which disc you get, you will be able to use the track.
Seriously, apologies all around for the inconvenience on this...I like to
think this stuff doesn't happen while I'm on duty, but alas. :-[
Hey Casey, this occurred to me today: When did we make the Timecoded copy? Months ago, right (after they recorded Footloose)? But then I think we sent the DVD back, and just reordered it a week ago when they were recording. Is it possible we got sent a different copy the second time?

That's pretty much what I'm thinking happened. Still doesn't account for the track syncing up when I was working on the sample earlier this week though. Either way, it'll get taken care of ASAP.
Gadzooks.* Sorry about this, folks. Janet and I fully appreciate you guys taking the time to figure out your reauthors and give our track a shot. We're pretty proud of it, and think it's comparable to what we've done previous--so I truly hope you enjoy it once this all gets figured out.
*gee wilikers, leapin' lizards, and oh-yoy-yoy were all considered, but gadzooks was chosen by a personally hired quorum at great expense.
I've always been a fan of "Eegad!"
Jeepers is a fun one also. Great trax! Very funny!
There is a new MP3 that will (hopefully) be going up by the end of the day.
Thanks Thrash. This is really appreciated.
Had a double feature of "Footloose" and "Poltergeist" over the weekend and loved them both. I was wary of "Poltergeist" being riffed because it's still one of my favorite horror movies and I wasn't looking forward to hearing jokes. It was reassuring to hear Varney point out in the intro how much she liked the movie.
I'm hoping they tackle "The Lost Boys" next.

Alright everyone, the new file has been tested and added to the product...anyone who has already bought it should see a new file "Poltergeist25thAnniversary_Riff.mp3" in their list of files. PAL version coming soon.
You tha man.
Do we get one for the abridged five(5) minute version?!

Thanks much for releasing the Riff for the 25th Anniversary edition DVD. Syncs perfect on the copy I got from Netflix.
Now to watch it :highfive:
Just put the new MP3 into Audacity. It had some weird issue (http://forum.rifftrax.com/index.php/topic,17844.msg544171.html#msg544171) that forced me to convert it to AC3 first, but after that, it synced perfectly. I didn't check all the sync lines, just a few before and after the halfway point where the drift creeps in.
Awesome! I enjoy all of their riffs. I noticed a trend though:
Dirty Dancing, Ghost, Footloose, Poltergeist... That means the next movie they riff has to be another dancing movie.
Personally, it's more a standard musical, but I would LOVE to see them take on From Justin To Kelly.
