Title: Rob Zombie To Remake The Blob
Post by: Henry88 on August 28, 2009, 09:43:48 AM
QuoteIn an unexpected turn of events, Rob Zombie will soon be writing, directing, and co-producing ... not an original film as you might think ... but a reinvention of The Blob. Yes, The Blob.

Variety reports that production will begin next spring. While he'll follow the release of "H2" with a new album and tour this fall, he'll complete the script at that time. "I usually follow a movie by putting out a record and going on tour, and I write the script during that tour," he said. "The tour will take me through Christmas."

As for why the shift back into remake mode, Zombie explained, "I'd been looking to break out of the horror genre, and this really is a science fiction movie about a thing from outer space. I intend to make it scary, and the great thing is, I have the freedom once again to take it in any crazy direction I want to. Even more than 'Halloween', where I had to deal with accepted iconic characters like Michael Myers and Laurie Strode. 'The Blob' is more concept than specific storyline with characters, so I can go nuts with it. My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing ... I have a totally different take, one that's pretty dark."

Zombie will produce with The Genre Co.'s Richard Saperstein (the former Dimension Films president who became close with Zombie during H2) and Brian Witten, original Blob producer Jack H. Harris, and Judith Parker Harris of Worldwide Entertainment Corporation. The budget for the film, which is already being promoted as R-rated, will be around $30 million. As for who The Genre Co. is, it is apparently an entity to watch as they are currently also in pre-production on Darren Bousman's Mother's Day redux. Always good to see new friends of horror arriving on the scene.

What this all means for Zombie's mysterious Tyrannosaurus Rex remains to be seen. In the meantime, wrap your brains around this announcement by watching the original film's trailer from 1958 and wondering who among today's crop of young actors could come close to filling Steve McQueen's shoes.

So in this one, is the Blob going to be a really fat redneck in a wifebeater?

Seems like he'd going to ditch the actual Blob for this remake as well: http://chud.com/articles/articles/20630/1/SHERRI-MOON-ZOMBIE-TO-GAIN-400-POUNDS-FOR-ROB039S-REMAKE-OF-THE-BLOB/Page1.html

I really wish Rob would get back to making original stuff. His Halloween remake sucked something fierce, and I'm not too confidant as to how that sequel is going to play out. That's not giving much hope for this remake.

I thought that with all the horror remakes going on, The Blob was kinda inevitable.  I'm still amazed that the remake/sequel of the Thing hasn't come and gone already.

Is there any movie that isn't getting a remake in the next two years?

Pennsylvania has been upping their incentives to make movies in the commonwealth.  It would be nice if they filmed the remake in Phoenixville, just like the original.  The town is very proud of their Blob roots.

What's the PA incentive? I'm hoping it comes my way.

Michigan; currently offering more than any of y'all to make movies in our state.  :highfive:

Now if I could get Tim Allen to make that commercial instead of the bloody stupid snow one.

oh just the usual tax credits.  Although at the moment, it's kinda in limbo since the state budget hasn't been passed.  But last year they were able to get Transformers and The Road to film here.  And I think the next big movie they got to come here is a Tony Scott/Denzel Washington joint.  I'm not sure if that's started to film yet though.

25% apparently

Ours is up to 42% except some moronic state senators want to eliminate it. Their arguments come in two forms; "I don't get how having films made here makes the state money" and "ewww film people".  ::)

Hopefully they'll not prevail.

New Mexico, North Carolina and Louisiana are the other three states I know of that have really been pushing the tax credits.  But they don't have the snazzy Tim Allen commercials.

Pennsylvania really needs to have some of those commercials.  Maybe the It's Always Sunny gang can do them.

So when are you and the Missus going to be on that?

If you needed a reason NOT to see Halloween II....this should do it.

That film falls on it's face and the studio may change it's mind about The Blob.

I thought the first Halloween had a HUGE drop off after the first weekend? I wouldn't be surprised if this one tanks, or makes significantly less anyway. I think the studio may be less willing to hand over money to him soon enough.

If he wants to make a movie about rednecks, how about an adaptation of the video game Redneck Rampage? Now that I might see.

Or a live action version of "Squidbillies".

Well, at least he's not trying to remake Deliverance.

The 80s movie had a pretty good budget (for that kind of movie) and put everything towards the effects. Also, it was made in the 80s, so it was the height of the purely practical effects era. Now the Blob would be CGI and not nearly as cool.

Although I really like practical effects, I think this kind of movie would look awesome done with CGI.  Imagine the blob consuming people and having them slowly dissolve inside it.

Well, Halloween II opened third this weekend....some reports say a distant third.  There could be hope.

And judging by some of the FAQs on imdb.com - most of which are basically "Didn't Loomis/Michael/Annie/Fill-in-the-blank die in the first film?" - those who did see it weren't so thrilled.

On the other hand, there's something there about a 3-D Halloween coming in 2010.  Don't know if it's a Rob Zombie movie or not.

Halloween 2 made $18 million in its opening weekend.  That's not exactly a smash hit, but the movie only cost $15 million to make.  In an interview Harvey Weinstein said that they're hoping to release a third, 3D edition next summer.

Well, Zombie said he's not going to do a third Halloween movie, period (at Comic Con, I believe) and refused to say why.  So they'll have to find someone else.

And I didn't know that the Weinsteins were behind these.  These damn things make a penny more than they cost and they'll make a sequel.

I don't think they need Zombie any more.  Actually, they might not have wanted him after this one, considering the bashing the movie's getting.  You know who I think they should get for the third one? John Carpenter! The man's cheap enough, and carries enough horror-cache with the niche audiences that could bring in some bucks.  Plus he's in a pretty low point in his career, maybe enough to make him want to revisit the franchise.

Why would he want to?  Between The Fog, these, this rumored remake of his version of The Thing...he's getting all of his money upfront in licensing, sitting on his butt and taking none of the risk, financially or career-wise.  And if the new people don't screw up and they make any kind of profit, I'm sure he's getting something on the back side as well.

Money-wise, I'm sure he's fine.  Career-wise, he's reduced to the Masters of Horror series that ran a little while ago.  A return to Halloween would give him a chance to make a major motion picture again, something he hasn't done for a while.

The source material is a really cool comicbook mini-series by Greg Rucka.  A friend of mine was kinda infuriated by the trailer, because it seems to prioritise the action over the mystery.  I'm a little more hopeful that it's just the trailer selling the busier parts of the movie.

I'm aware.

My point is....what more would a prequel to The Thing be than a bunch of people in an arctic outpost waiting for the wind to die down or the sun to finally come up (and for better or worse, that's all I get out of the commercials for Whiteout)?

It only gets interesting when the monster shows up.

The prequel to The Thing would take place at the other camp that McCreedy and the others explored and saw the big block of ice where the creature melted out of it. That was supposed to be a nod to the original movie, so the prequel would be like a remake of the original, but with the effects of a new movie.

And we already know that it escapes - either as a dog or turns into one just as it approaches the other camp - and whatever was left of that group dies in the helicopter.

Yawn.

There's a reason that most stories start where they do.....

I agree, but it can compromise the movie's tension if its telegraphed too much.  The recent Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie had that problem, and so did Romero's Diary of the Dead, but for different reasons.
