Did Mike and his Special Guest fend off the Commies properly??
PUME!!
It's cool to see that Other Joel is a MSTie.
Well done on both parts, nice job of eliminating dead space, Mike and Other Joel had a good chemistry and seemed like they were having fun!
It scored a 9.3 in my book.
I gave it a 9..
Joel & Mike did GR8, but Bill and Kevin were M.I.A. (probably A.W.A.L. ::) ) >:(
I liked it. It's nice to see that Joel is a genuine fan of MST3K and seemed to enjoy doing the riff which always helps. That being said, I'd love for him to do another one in the future and this one (in my eyes) was a success.
9/10

Well, you could balance it out by seeing a Rifftrax Presents title with Kevin and Bill right afterward. Make it a double feature! ;D

Done Did!
Just finished watching ID4-Independence Day 8)
Very funny riff, top-notch jokes. Joel did a great job, in my opinion; delivered his lines extremely well, I thought. I will definitely be watching this more than once.
Not bad, not brilliant. Gave it a 6. My review...Red Dawn (http://www.geocities.com/opheliaskiss01/MightyJack/MJ2/Rifftrax3.html#reddawn)
I'm left wondering what the big deal was.
Don't get me wrong, the Rifftrax itself was awesome. A solid 8. Laughter and mirth abound, and Joel made an awesome guest-riffer, but after all these years of hyping it up as the best riff-fodder ever, I was expecting a goofier movie, or a worse movie, or maybe just a more rediculous movie, but the source material was fairly well-grounded, the movie was all right, and the script was reasonably plausable. Am I losing my ability to enjoy movies ironically? Has The Room made it so, by comparison, every other movie isn't so bad? Who started the whole "Red Dawn" thing on these forums? Anyone care to shed some light?
I might have to see it again before I rate it, but I was laughing a hell of a lot. Glad J McH was able to record one and he did not disapoint at all.
I would rank higher (I assume) but missed 1/4 of the jokes due to volume reasons.

That's what I thought too. Compared to a Road House or even an Over the Top, the unintentional comedy just isn't there ("avenge me" is probably the finest moment of that sort.)
They don't even yell "wolverines" that often, maybe twice? and wasn't even that funny when they did.
The whole movie felt like they had some grandiose ideas on a very limited budget. I can see this being a fun movie if they remade it with a larger budget, but the move felt kinda cheap. The acting was fine, but not much else was.

Why did you say that?!
Definitely a perfect 10! Joel and Mike together was a real treat.
As for a couple comments made above. Red Dawn has always been on my list of movies to get the treatment, it wasn't my most wanted Rifftrax, but after many others showed similar interest it definitely climbed to my number one spot.
On the surface its just an average implausible fear based movie thats nothing altogether that special (apart from the big name actors) ... but soon the several memorable scenes easily turn into in jokes amongst friends. I thought me and my group of friends were basically alone in this (err... thus the definition of an inside joke / screaming of an obscure movie quote) until I got to this forum I never realized so many people had ever even heard of the movie... a little bit obscure and mainstream at the same time... perfect fodder for an in joke... the South Park guys, Seth Mcfarlen a couple times, pretty sure I remember the Sklar Brothers or Simpson's, and many other comedy acts cant resist a good Red Dawn joke. Was it the perfect fodder for Rifftrax? Not really Red Dawn was certainly more challenging than a lot of movies, Batman and Robin is probably the easiest to make jokes at in my opinion... but not all movies are necessarily easy. Long story short, dozens of us on the forum GOT the in side joke, sorry if we hyped it up too much, certainly wasn't the intention. Just my take, perhaps others could take a stab at Conor's question.
Totally rambled there. As for the Rifftrax, its a solid 10 with tons of great jokes. Was the choice of Red Dawn a 'Joel Mchale trax' we were expecting him to do?... not really... as a fan of the Soup I was expecting a more recent film made this year or last year... but it really didn't matter because it was easy to notice Mike & Joel's chemistry. Maybe another time they can do a 'blockbuster' film, or perhaps instead Mike could do a cameo on Joel's turf (one of his two shows), that would be equally cool.

I think it was one of those things that just got legs and took on a life of it's own. I don't know if there was ever that many people clamoring for it as there were people who thought it was funny to clamor for it....
Yeah, I think it's a fine little cheesey movie that "dared" to have a little fun with a concept and got hammered for it. Not going to win any awards but it's fun as hell.

Does it make me naive that I'd like to hope people these days are a bit more evolved than the kind of jingoistic yahoos who would have liked this movie when it first came out?
I really enjoyed this, the fact the guys keep breaking during the riffing gave it a good atmosphere too.
I gave it a 9.
Favorite bit? Mike doing the Air Wolf theme.

Well, yes. I mean, you could remake this movie with Arabs instead of Communists and it would be a smash hit.
Just got done with Red Dawn... Joel did a great job as a guest riffer, the mood was relaxed and they brought a bunch of nice jokes. It was one of those riffs where if you never saw the movie before, you could still follow along and enjoy it just fine. The guys didn't try to hard to overwhelm every sliver of dead air with riffs... but just kept a steady pace going throughout. I didn't get a ton of big belly laughs as I do with their best efforts but very few jokes fell flat... So as of right now, I'd give it an eight outta ten... but I got a feeling this one will probably bump to a nine with repeat viewings.

Ditto on pretty much everything above. Not a lot of belly laughs but steady throughout. My main issue had nothing to do with the quality of the riffs. Joel wasn't miked as well as Mike or something. There were quite a few times where I could barely hear Joel.

Towelheads are the new Reds.
We will always have stupid, hatefilled people. We only evolve if we ignore them and stop voting for conservatives.

I believe it's going to be the Chinese this time round.
Anyway, 9 out of 10 from me! Joel was fantastic (shame about the low mix on his jokes sometimes though).
MORE JOEL!
Late reply, but I just got around to watching this. No offense to Bill or Kevin, but I enjoyed the Mike and Joel duo. I think guest riffer trax are some of the best.
[honesty] Totally sucks that P.S. has passed... but I'm glad they got these last few Swayze films in. It probably would've been inappropriate otherwise. RIP. [/honesty]
Also, More Joel Mchale Trax please!!

It wouldn't necessarily be in poor taste. They riffed The Dark Knight even though Heath Ledger had passed away.
^^^ Good point.
I can sum up this riff in only two words, piss poor. Simply too dark a film to riff (in spite of the times). Not even the smartasstic comedy stylings of my Reptilian friend Joel McHale can save this venture. Some lines brought chuckles, but that's about it (The best part was the banter between Mike and Joel before the film). Three out of ten, and I'm being generous.
A lot of forum members were screaming for this to be riffed, I hope you enjoyed yourselves. Guess I'm not into lizard humor. <-- I just find that fun to say. ;)
I smell what Joel and his ilk are cooking, and it smells like Chicken Tetrazzini. That's the problem.
I was going through my rifftrax the other day and realized that I'd somehow missed picking this one up. I must have been ass deep in work when it came out or something, otherwise I don't know how the hell I missed it! (I also noticed I missed ever getting Halloween so I corrected that as well)
Anyway, Joel amazed me in how good he was at this. It doesn't look like Mike will ever repeat with a guest star and that's too bad because Mike and Joel McHale are simply wonderful together. Joel's an obvious fan and it really showed. They set a great tone at the beginning when Joel kept interrupting Mike and saying "pause". LMFAO What a great way to start a trax with a first time guest riffer.
The riff of the movie was hilarious. 10! Lot of awesome lines and this is easily the funniest guest riffer trax since Weird Al did it. Speaking of that, is it just me or were there moments where Joel sounded like Weird Al? Their sarcastic high pitch riffs really reminded me of each other.
As for the movie itself. I was 15 when I saw it in the theaters and boy has it not aged very well. I can't imagine those of you too young to remember the Cold War watching this now. I mean, back in the 80s we literally went to bed at night thinking there was a chance the world could end. That's inconceivable now. And maybe it's just me because my father was in the Navy and he was on one of the ships (The Newport News) that was part of the Cuban Missile Crisis blockade. His ship was the one that searched the first transport out when they were taking the missiles back out. So the Cold War was very real in my family growing up. The expectation of WWIII was real to me growing up. I don't think people who are in the teens or 20s now can imagine what that was like.
This movie fed on that fear. Now that the fear has passed, a large part of this movie doesn't work on any level. And I'm sure it must have been very hard to riff.
But you guys pulled it off! Great riff and fantastic guest! I sure hope Joel breaks the trend and comes back! Weird Al finally came back for a short so we have hope!

The problem with famous guests is they're normally busy with lots of projects. I imagine that doing more feature length podcasts isn't marked as high as something else which will get them way more money and exposure. I doubt it's a matter of Mike not wanting to have certain guest stars make return appearances. I'm not saying it'll never happen, it was nice to have Weird Al and Jonathan Coulton appear at the live shows, but that's what makes them guest stars and not regulars.
I disagree about the whole "end of the world" situation not seeming real to this generation. Sure the Russians don't seem like a real threat now, but the end times have been a constant concern to various members of our society for ages. I remember people being scared about Y2K and terrorists pretty clearly. Heck, I have a co-worker who seriously believes in the 2012 hype.
Oh, what I meant was the specific threat of the Soviets destroying the world is no longer with us, which was the subject matter of this movie. So that kinda takes a bite out of this movie's atmosphere. Kinda of like how we can now only take a movie about Martians invading us so seriously, but back in the 40s and 50s when that felt more real, those movies felt more real. That's all I was saying.
Good points about how busy guests stars are. I'm sure that has a lot to do with it.
I gave this a 6. It only got a few laughs from me.
I've been a fan of The Soup for years (Joel is by far the funniest host) so maybe my expectations were a bit high. It's cool Joel's a MST3K fan and all, but he didn't seem very on here. It must be tough considering Kevin, Bill, and Mike have done hundreds of movies together, but I can't really excuse the mediocre writing, off timing, and missed opportunities. Reguardless, I'd like to hear more of Joel because I'm sure he'd be great if he could find a groove.
