How come Michael Bay couldn't be directing this instead of ruining a property that could be cool.
Bay, you're movies are already gay, do He-man Spend two years making He-Man so noone can watch it when it comes out and your career will finally be over.

It's because he never had hair. He was born badass.
The Dolph Lundgren film is an '80s classic, but I would like to see a new version set entirely on Eternia. I'm not a fan of the cartoon, but there's a lot of cool characters and ideas that I hope they include.

Two really interesting directors, and then a comedy director and a kids movie directors. Makes me wonder if they even know what direction they want to take this.
Actually, with the exception of the guys who did the Croods, they are all interesting choices to me. Obviously Joe Cornish and Rian Johnson would be cool, though much like Duncan Jones directing World of Warcraft, I have a hard time envisioning it. I LOVE Brick, but I don't think of Rian as the stylish kind of director for a fantasy/sci-fi movies that feature barbarians with lazer guns. Not to say he can't do it, but I can't begin to imagine what he would do with it... which is rather exciting.
Anyway, the director of Mama is actually a bit interesting to me. I never saw the film and the lukewarm response doesn't make me want to run to see it, but I have an inkling (a gut feeling) that he's someone like Alexandre Aja: someone who can do some subpar movies, but has enough of his own voice that he might be capable of something great. For Aja, it was Piranha 3D, a movie that I have mixed feelings on, but feel that his voice rang through what could have been a purely pedestrian production. I could be wrong, but I'm interested in it. Not Cornish or Johnson interested, but interested.
As for Miller and Lord, these guys are really proving themselves a comedic force, but I think they could make a straight forward adventure fantasy easily enough. Though the focus on Clone High, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and 21 Jump Street were laughs first, they definitely had a handle on characters and giving us protagonists to root for. Personally, though, I'd much rather see them go the Edgar Wright route and have them do a Marvel movie. Maybe Hulk. After all, the most effective version of the Hulk had a big focus on humour.
Anyway, I must admit that these names make me FAR most interested in a He-Man movie that I would have ever expected.
BTW, Michael J. Straczynski would be a good screenwriter for this one. I'm not as big a fan of MJS as LucasM, but the man knows the character (starting his career working on the series) and his Thor work (which is probably my favourite of his in the last 10 years) was a great example of him making a fun fantasy adventure series.
Anyhoo, this is all just speculation since while the list of names may be real, at this stage anything could happen and it is not too much different from fan speculation.
We have three "frontrunners" in consideration to direct MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE! (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/66337)
I think this could be awesome if done right. I've always loved me some Sorceress, and who doesn't love Skeletor?
If they went Conan-y with it and downplayed the magic a bit I think it could be a lot of fun.
I don't know about that. I can't imagine MOTU with downplayed magic. Skeletor's gotta be rolling in the black magic.
Yeah, that is part of the premise. A regular guy is magically transformed into the most powerful man in the universe. I personally would like to see some magicpunk type stuff. Technology that runs on magic!
Yeah anything associated with this:
QuoteFabulous secret powers were revealed to me the day I held aloft my magic sword and said "By the power of Grayskull, I have the power!"
Is going to have a hard time downplaying the magic and still being recognizably the same fictional universe.
I think Swipes is right techno-magical devices would be cool.
And maybe the occasional positive affirmation from Skeletor...

MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE Writer Shares Origin Of Eternia & Castle Grayskull (http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/nailbiter111/news/?a=61879)

SHADOWLAND MAGAZINE: When Mattel initially hired you to write the original four Masters of the Universe mini-comics how much of the story and characters had already been fleshed out? Did Mattel already have a structured outline, an early concept to expand upon, or was much of the story left to your imagination?
DONALD F. GLUT: I wasn't hired by Mattel per se, but by Western Publishing Company. Western, at the time, was publishing a lot of licensed books, comics, etc. owned by various movie, TV and toy companies. My main editor at Western offered me the gig. He showed me a set of about a half dozen Polaroid photos from Mattel, showing prototypes of various characters and also the castle, most of which were, at the time, unnamed. I recall He-Man and Man-at-Arms - and possibly Beast Man already having names, but not much else. Mattel sent notes to Western describing what the toys did. But the names of the other characters, the universe they existed in, their origins and powers, etc. were pretty much left up to me. And I was instructed to include in the stories how the toys and their accessories (like swords) functioned.
SM: Were you responsible for coming up with the names of Eternia, Castle Grayskull, and He-Man's Power Sword?
DFG: Yes, all three. The name Eternia was inspired by the title of the movie Fantasia To my thinking it seemed to fit because the mixing of the primitive and futuristic - swords and fantastic vehicles, for example -suggested to me an "eternal" or timeless universe. Castle Grayskull I named after my then-wife's maiden name, Gray. I named the Power Sword after the Power Stone, a recurring plot device from some of the earliest Superman comic-book stories.

'Thor: Ragnarok' Scribe to Pen 'Masters of the Universe' for Sony (EXCLUSIVE) (http://variety.com/2015/film/news/he-man-masters-of-the-universe-christopher-yost-writer-1201573946/)

After helping shape the world of Asgard, "Thor" scribe Christopher Yost is now ready to head to Eternia to help He-Man return to the bigscreen.
Sony Pictures and Escape Artists have tapped Yost to do a rewrite on its reboot of "Masters of the Universe."
Terry Rossio and Jeff Wadlow wrote previous drafts of "Masters of the Universe," which is being produced by Escape Artists principals Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch.
Set on the planet of Eternia, the story follows a warrior named Prince Adam who has the power to transform into the heroic He-Man. His nemesis is a villain named Skeletor who seeks to conquer a fortress known as Castle Grayskull in order to learn the secrets held within.
Filmation/Mattel's "He Man and the Masters of the Universe" cartoon ran from 1983-85 and spawned a movie starring Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella that subsequently became a cult hit.
Yost cut his teeth in the Marvel writing room on a number of animated properties before contributing to the first "Thor" film and providing a polish on the script for "Thor: the Dark World." Marvel was so impressed with his work on the first two films in the franchise that they tapped him to co-write the upcoming "Thor: Ragnarok" with Craig Kyle.

It seems longer because they produced an insane number of episodes for two seasons (producing them straight into syndication) and once they stopped producing new He-Man they immediately went into production on She-Ra Princess of Power, pairing those new episodes with re-runs of He-Man.
Part of the Charm of... Transformers, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, GI Joe, Jem, what have you is that it has a certain feel to it that comes with being something as a product of its decade. I'm thinking that things just can't be the way they used to be in the way that we loved so much. There was a certain, dare I say... cheesy appeal? But it was a genuine feeling dammit, it made us happy and it made us giddy as hell. Even the 87 Masters of the universe movie really wasn't that bad if a bit uneven. It's just weird to think Tom Paris was in that movie, along with Ivan Drago and future Perry White.
Then again I could just be full of shit too.
I think the cartoon is probably awful but I loved it as a kid, the box-art for the toys is spectacular though imo
The cartoon was cheaply made, which usually made it look bad (except for certain parts of "The Price of Power" which was actually beautifully animated for its time), but it had a lot of potential boiling just under the surface, especially from the writing staff. When I bought the box sets way back in the day I was surprised how often I recognized the names of the writers, especially when Paul Dini started coming up.
Well it didn't fit anywhere else...

The only way this works is if they lean HARD into the insanity. I want Ram Man retracting his legs and springing forward into his foes. I want Mekanek to scout ahead with his stretchy robotic neck. I want Modulok to be able to assemble himself into various configurations of limbs. I want Stinkor and Snout Spout!

I agree, gritty realism is just going to make this boring. They also are going to have to find a star that not only looks the part, but has a LOT of charisma.
Chris Hemsworth seems like an obvious pick. Maybe too obvious..

Yeah, someone like him would be perfect. Otherwise we'll get one of the many many handsome and buff actors that are just blocks of wood. His brother Liam would be a good example of that.
But even with good casting, it still has to be written well.
One word made me no longer excited: Sony.
