Hypothetically, if say there was some new government mandate that forbid the watching of any movies other than three that you would be allowed to pick out in advance, what would they be?
Or, to be less weird, what movies can you watch over and over and never get sick of?
My choices:
Robin Hood: Men in Tights
Kung Fu Panda
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
The Back to the Future trilogy.
Once Upon a Time in the West
Blade Runner
A Matter of Life and Death
Just so my bases are covered:
Glengarry Glen Ross - One of my all time favorites, all dialogue, with amazing actors and performances.
Die Hard - To fill my shoot-em-up action adventure needs.
Dumb & Dumber - When I need a laugh.
So unfair though, cuz I'm leaving out dozens of beloved classics.
1.Animal Crackers
2.Citizen Kane
3.The Empire Strikes Back
Ooh, well first I'd probably cry for a while at the thought of all the movies I couldn't watch again, and then pick:
Grindhouse (counting this as one movie) for my action, gore, zombie, and Tarantino needs
Shaun of the Dead for the laughs and additional zombies
The Shawshank Redemption for the uplifting feeling, which I'm going to need when I realize (again) how many movies I can't watch anymore.

3.The Empire Strikes Back
All great choices! I can watch Animal Crackers all day and never get sick of it. Here would be my choices:
1- Singing in the Rain
2- It Happened One Night
3- Animal Crackers
This is simple...
1 - Amelie
2 - RAD
3 - Big Trouble in Little China
:)

Yeah I figure Animal Crackers would be good when I want comedy(I have been watching it since I was four and still have not gotten tired of it),Citizen Kane would hold me for drama/artsy picture, and Empire Strikes Back would do me for action movie.
Singing in the Rain may be the only musical I can ever remember enjoying at all.
Good choice.
Young Frankenstein
The Godfather
The Omega Man
Sixteen Candles
Say Anything
Back to the Future ... or Clerks 2.
The Big Lebowski
Bull Durham
The Fisher King
I would just make three movies about me kicking the guy who came up with that mandate in the balls. Take THAT, hypothetical GUY.
I would go with...
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
The Jerk
The Princess Bride
The Third Man
Seven Samurai
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Yea, screw the banks!. It's these G.D. film production companies that need to be regulated!!! ;)
Seriously, though, this is a tough one. These usually come in the form of the "top-ten list" where you have some wiggle room, but three?!?
Okay, here goes:
"Annie Hall"
"Fight Club"
"Pulp Fiction"..no wait! "Monty Python and the...aaaaahhhhhhhhh!!!"

That's the point, what would you choose if you had no wiggle room? Plus, it's more fun this way.
Anchorman The Legend Of Ron Burgundy
Duck Soup
The Great Escape
Hot Fuzz
Big Trouble in Little China-for the commentary
and
Skyscraper starring Anna Nicole Smith as a Helicopter Pilot who is fighting a bad guy who quotes Shakespeare with a lisp. I have never laughed so hard at movie in all of my life
Holy crap! :( This is assuming that they can't stop me from replaying movies to myself in my head....the ones I've seen a million times.
I think this is my list:

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
Back to the Future
Gladiator

The Third Man
Seven Samurai
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
you were smart to pick 7 samurai-- a 4 hour movie that has everything--action, comedy, romance, suspense, etc. Shoulda thought of that. I'm gonna be stuck on an island with 3 short movies.
The Empire Strikes Back
Fight Club
Life of Brian
Once Upon a Time in the West
Touch of Evil
Mulholland Drive
QuoteSkyscraper starring Anna Nicole Smith as a Helicopter Pilot who is fighting a bad guy who quotes Shakespeare with a lisp. I have never laughed so hard at movie in all of my life
There's a plot and characters? I must have skipped that part.
If the plot revolves around a slo-mo shower scene where she soaps her self off while apparently having an orgasm then yes, a plot. You know, I myself have never been that excited to take a shower. I mean sure, it feel nice and everything, but not THAT nice

Welp, there goes my libido.
Hmmm... This is really difficult. I mean, there are a lot of kneejerk movies I think of that I just don't know if I could still watch them after the 40th viewing. And then, should I choose something with, say, Jenna Haze in it just so I have that base covered? So I'll just think of movies that I've watched over and over again since childhood and can still watch.
1. Jaws
2. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
3. The Wolfman
Though, Bride of Frankenstein, which someone referenced above, would be in a much bigger list.
1. Back to the Future (Part 2)
2. The Great Escape
3. Rocky
When The Great Escape is on, I can't stop watching it.

The Great Escape is an all around fantastic movie, made even cooler when you realize that several of the cast members were actually POWs during WWII. Also, I wanted to add that my fourth choice would have been Jaws.
I think it's simple really: you need a violent movie, a funny movie, and porn. Or... three movies that have all of the above.
I watch movies to escape reality, so my choices would be the escapiest movies I know:
1) Return of the Jedi: I've lost track of how many times I've seen it, and it still glues me to my seat every time I see more than a minute of it.
2) Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Yes. The Disney movie.) I can't explain it. It's not the best incarnation of Hitchhiker's Guide, and it's probably not even in my top ten movies of all time, but whenever I watch it, I get to the end credits feeling profoundly happy. In a "It's great to be alive!" kind of way. Doesn't matter what else is happening in my life. I just wouldn't want to face a world where I couldn't watch it again. No other movie has ever had such a profound grip on my mood. Except maybe...
3) Who Framed Roger Rabbit: I am and have always been addicted to Cartoons, and when it comes to escapism, strange though it may sound, Roger Rabbit fits the bill for me. If I could live in a movie, I'd live in that one. In toontown. :^)

I think this is my favorite list. Also cool to meet someone else who feels that way about the Hitchhiker movie :)
Man, I read all of your choices and you make me re-think my decisions. Thank God something like this would never happen, I'd go insane.
My list:
Nightmare Before Christmas
Lord of the Rings (The whole thing, as it is really one long movie split up for similar practical reasons that the one long book was split up)
The Incredibles
P.S.

1. If LOTR counts as one film, then I'd put it on my list, too.
2. BTTF 2 is also my favorite! But Empire is my favorite Star Wars....
3. Someone mentioned Hitchhiker's Guide and I enjoy it too---best parts are Stephen Fry's lovely silky voice reading straight from the book and those hilarious animantions.
