I watched the rifftrax Carnival of Souls last night and holy crap...
It made the Coleman Francis movies seem like masterpieces by comparison. Ed Wood has noting on these guys. I consider Hobgoblins to be a timeless classic now that I have seen this movie.
Am I nuts or was this the worst movie ever riffed / possibly the worst film every made?
Opinion is divided. I think that, without the riffing, Carnival of Souls is actually a pretty spooky movie. It conveys tension nicely, has some good camerawork, and the broken-down pier is a great setting. The thing about riffing - and it happened with the Halloween riff too - is that it completely destroys any atmosphere or tension that the movie tries to build, so all you're left with is a bunch of silly looking people dancing a waltz too fast. :)

It occurred to me when we were doing it that I thought this might be one of the worst movies we've ever done. I hate just about everything about it, from the unlikeability of the lead actress, to the creepy guy, the horrible soundtrack, the repeated beats it hits (back to the doctors office, back to the carnival, etc), to the predictable twilight zone style ending. I'll take The Happening over this one any day, at least it's good for some laughs.
Nothing happens. Nothing.
An unpleasant organist gets hit on by a greasy guy in Utah, she stares into space a lot, and dudes in poorly executed mime makeup show up from time to time.
Sandstorm. Deeeeeep Huuuuuuurting.
The riffguys have mentioned that movies with long pauses are hard to riff, so this seems like it must have been an epic challenge. Turned out well, though. Pretty damn funny.
And don't forget the fact that at least 98% of the movie is made up of things that don't actually happen. If it weren't for the riffing the main point I'd get at the end of the movie would be "congratulations, you just wasted about 80 minutes (or however long the movie is)"
The riffing, thankfully makes it fun.
Just because I don't have enough abuse in my life, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and admit this is actually one of my favorite low budget horror movies of all time.
Still loved the Riff, though.
