IT'S TIME FOR...20 QUESTIONS!!SEE IF YOU CAN GUESS THE NEXT RIFFTRAX FLICK!!
-DA RULEZ-Ask a "Yes" or "No" question
Wait for response
We will ONLY answer the first question asked after a response
The same person who asked the last question can't ask twice in a row.
Asking a vague question equals 5 forfeits of a question.
Don't expect any clues ;)

Oooh. It feels like we just had the last one. Now remember fellas, let's try and reach a consensus on the questions! ;D
Oh, and I know tis but a minor thing, but any chance you could include GMT when you post the start time? I'm useless at the conversion... :)
Is it Pirates of the Caribbean?
;D
(just kidding!!)
Another one, already? We're still riding the high from the Dr. Moreau announcement.
Guys and gals, lets not make the same mistake we did with the last 20 questions (eg, blurting out the titles of movies without checking the already confirmed facts)
I'm sure IMDB, as well as genre/decade sites will help us tremendously, so lets look through those while we do it. I suggest trying to narrow down and pinpoint the year this time as well.
We gonna get this one, sucka!!!!!
Rats I will have to sleep through this one, good luck guys, hopefully the new server can handle it.
Woops///
OK, everyone. I'm not gonna tell anyone what to ask and what not to ask, but a few things to keep in mind.
1) The Holiday movie would PROBABLY be announced via Da Penguin riddle, based on past holidaytrax announcements. Wouldn't jump right in to holiday guessing unless the clues start to lean that way.
2) Comedies are, for the most part, not good Riff fodder, bad though they may be. It's not out of the question, but, again, unless the questions really point to one, might not be a good idea to throw 'em out there.
3) (A lesson I learned myself last time) If you're not sure about one of the questions (Like, is this based on a book, does it star a previous Rifftrax member) do some research before you pitch in a guess. Don't base it on whether the movie seems like it MIGHT be based on a book or MIGHT have some Rifftrax stars. :^)
4) Usually not a good idea to throw out a movie until we're in the ballpark. Sometimes, it's OK to come out of left field, but let's not try on questions 1-5 at least. See how the questioning fits your suspicion before you jump in.
Everyone should have imdb.com open in another window so you can quickly look up any guesses you have. Remember the recommended guidelines for the first few questions:
Find out the genre, decade, and rating first, it's the easiest way to narrow down the list.
Then based on the responses to those questions, ask appropriate follow ups. Like since we know a movie is sci-fi, find out if it takes place in the future, etc.

Yea, sorry about the Coneheads guess last time. It fit every clue but being based on a book.
I've been using Wikipedia; they have been pretty good about genres and time periods.
Monday got a little crazy. We have learned! (Now to see if it STAYS learned at 2PM)

I'm assuming people are just going to be blurting stuff out because the winning guess gets the free rifftrax prize...I wouldn't count on this being very organized.

Wrong rating too....
Please make liberal use of imdb powersearch (or anything better, if it exists) using all answers received so far:
>>> http://www.imdb.com/list (http://www.imdb.com/list) <<<
Good questions (IMHO) are about:
year - let's try to narrow it down further than just the decade?
rating
actor
genre
Or anything that imdb powersearch could use to narrow it down.
Maybe ask something about the number of words in the title? That could be a good one too. And perhaps say "not including a, an, or the" to avoid confusion.
No way to yes/no that without using a lotta questions...
As a note, we're using IMDB to verify our answers to your questions. So if something is questionable, the IMDB can be used as "proof" for us to confidently give an answer.
IE, is the movie Sci-Fi? Dr. Moreau is classified as Sci-Fi on IMDB. So while there's no aliens or space travel, we checked that out and said "yes."
Also, an example of this is the plot descriptions. In the plot description for Dr. Moreau, IMDB said that it took place in the year 2010, allowing us to answer the question "Does it take place in the future relative to when the movie was made?" with a yes. Now, a better question would be something like "Did it take place more than fifty years in the future from when the movie was made, since that version of the question doesn't allow for misleading but true answers like "Well technically yes, it took place the next year."
Just some insight into how we answer questions. It's all in fun people. Can't wait to see how this one proceeds.

I like this idea david. so if we know it was made in the 80's, ask if it was made before 1985. Great idea.
It may not need too many yes/no questions to narrow down a number (such as a year) if you're smart about it. If you have a range (between 2000 and 2006, say), ask if it's greater than the one smack dab in the middle (after 2003) and the answer cuts your range in half no matter the answer. Certainly a lot better than narrowing it down one freaking movie at a time.
I agree with Jack Ross that we really shouldn't expect this 20 questions to be organized. N00bs who want a $3.00 Rifftrax for free are going to be the ones blurting out wild guesses. They have no real interest in finding out what the next movie will be. They only care about the free Rifftrax.
So, I simply suggest that all the veterans of this board be on their toes and ask their intelligent questions as quickly as they can. Hopefully you'll get in front of a n00b and we'll get helpful answers to helpful questions.
If the server is fixed (we'll see in a couple hours), I think this 20 questions will go much better than the last one. I'm hoping that was the true reason behind Monday's insanity. If not, I'm truely horrified at the lack of intelligence behind some of those guesses.
Wow, a new one already?? I feel so spoiled! (And I like it! ;) )
Hey! This will be a fun thing to tune in to during the loooongest hour of the day.

We've changed the rules on this one based upon user feedback. The person who is the MVP - decided upon by RiffTrax staff, possibly with help from a computational algorithm burned into DisembAudio's calculation circuit - will receive the free RiffTrax.
To reiterate:
simply blurting out the answer will NOT get you a free RiffTrax! You have to ask thoughtful, relevant, and non-contradictory questions that actually move the game forward. The person who is deemed the most valuable player will be the one to receive the bounty.

As long as you don't ask two questions in a row! (I'll be the second/fourth/sixth/etc asker, in that case :))
I was just thinking that the reason why it went well at the very end of the 20 questions last time was because everybody was working toward the answer, rather than trying to get a free rifftrax. If we had an official asker, it would stop newcomers trying to destroy any hard work we put in. It doesn't matter who asks the questions now, anyways.
Heh, I think everyone asking their own questions is fine... it's now a competition to see who can be the most helpful! (I'll help you across the street, ma'am! No, ME! I WILL! Get out of the way idiot!)

That's fixable, by the way. Go to your profile, pick "Look and Layout Preferences" from the menu on the left, and input an appropriate number of hours to offset. There's even a handy link there that will auto-detect it for you based on IP; it doesn't actually work very well, but it's there. Anyway, you'll figure it out.

Unfortunately if the final question (answer?) is going to be asked by someone, who was voted on by the other forum members... that kind of makes it unfair. We'd like to keep it... more.. fairer. Yeah.

'Based on a book?' Seems like a pretty good question from the last thread- if we get another one, should we try to narrow down when the book was written? That could make life pretty easy.

Making the 20 questions based on the book instead of the movie (if it IS based on a book...) That would be an odd strategy, but possibly helpful if everyone's on board (and only one movie is based on the book in question).
Myself, I'm going to narrow down the exact year of the
movie if I can. A good opener would be "was it made after 1990?"
Hmm. I don't wanna mess up our strategy, but on the main page, I was just treated to an errored out page of Mike in a Santa-Suit. I refreshed, and he turned back into Bow and Arrow Mike. :^)
I dont know if the book was such a good question. Island... was written by HG Wells and no one got it. Questions should be kept to easily found traits think *IMDB*
Then again, as I stated, X-Mas would probably be a Da penguin puzzle. Forget I said anything. :^)

I wouldn't waste possibly four or five questions narrowing it down exactly- within five years is almost certainly good enough.
And I think the reason the book thing didn't help much is that people weren't really paying attention- it would have ruled out most of the guesses.
should we say that no exact movie guesses until question 10?
Depends on how the questions go. :^)

If it's before 1990, should we ask 'before 1980?' or 'before 1985'? None of the movies thus far have been before 1980, so that might be a waste.

Halloween was before 1980. Still, 1980 is a reasonable lower bound I would imagine.

So it's a recent movie that's riffable that couldn't be classified as action, sci-fi, horror, or adventure. That sounds like drama/romance to me. A lot of the gimmicky romances of late, such as Lake House, might fit into science fiction, though.

Let's try to get the genre out of the way before asking any more questions.

I like that question too. Thinking outside the box.
Just because I know we're gonna go there, Ian McKellum (SP?) was in DaVincci Code. :^)

It can't be DaVinci code. we know that the movie didn't star anyone from a previous rifftrax, and Ian was in two of them.

Come on, man. That was actually a good movie. Please no more question wasting.
Does the first word of the title (not including a, an, or the) come before 'G' in the dictionary?
I think it's either Flightplan or Firewall
EDIT: not flighplan, that's action
Is it set more than 10 years before the movie's release?
edit: missed my window. I'm thinking Casanova, though.
NOT OFFICIAL -- guys, I wonder if we should ask if it's a romantic drama. Might narrow it down.
I'd just like to say how vastly improved the 20 Questions game is now that there are dozens of Schnappi's and DisembAudio's on every page of the contest.

Yup, I think it's safe to say this does NOT qualify as an action movie. That's not sarcasm, by the way, this movie was incredibly, incredibly dull.

Great job, guys.
Awesome. I actually saw this movie in the theater. It's crap-tastic!
OK. Now, can the mods please LOOK at the thread I refer them to before shooting the question down? You were thinking of the movie suggestion thread. I linked to the Rifftrax Playoffs Nomination thread. Only 4 pages. not unreasonable to look through. Narrowing it down with the ORIGINAL suggestion thread would be stupid. :^)

If he used imdb.com/list then it would've been quite a small list to choose from. Firewall and DaVinci Code were the only two that really stood out as having a chance of being riffed, but McKellen is in Lord of the Rings.
Swordfish is R
Can someone tell me how to narrow down both year AND Genra on IMDB?

let it go man, it was a cheap question on YOUR part
Sweet! Nice askin', gang.
I was forced to endure this crappy film on a flight between San Diego and D.C. (it was either that, or ruminate on how badly I had to whiz, but could not because the damned seat belt light was on, and I didn't much feel like being tackled by the flamingly gay flight attendant). It is most ripe for the RiffTrax treatment.

That would have made things incredibly complicated and slowed things down. there were still dozens of movies on there, and forcing everyone else to plow through it would defeat the purpose of having simple yes or no questions.
OK. Letting it go now. :^)

I just asked my toaster. :)
Actually, I just did a power search on imdb, which narrowed it down quite a bit, and with the clues given, I took a stab at it. That question of "does it come before M n the alphabet" REALLY helped.
But I get no free rifftrax! >:(
Who WAS the MVP?
I just want to tell you guys:
I'm going to get my dog.

Damn, Pak, give the mods a chance to convene!
;D
We should have a youtube preview up soon for you guys. It will come out on Friday, 12/8.
I think this 20 questions went much smoother than last time. If you noticed we didn't have any n00bs dropping in taking random shots (I think). So, I think the MVP system worked well at shooing those people away.
I still think we could have done just a bit better though. It'd be nice to take it one step at a time next time. First get the year narrowed down, then the genre out of the way, etc. Just my thoughts. Good job everyone.
I would have guessed "Batman Begins" if not for the action question. IMDb classifies it as drama, but probably also as action.
And now I feel kind of bad for Jack! Maybe the MVP and the correct guesser could both get prizes?? ;D

There's not really any reason that the correct guesser could not also be the MVP. It's just best if people don't expect that.
Wow, I came on just in time to see the last question posted.
Anyway, good job at guessing Firewall. This is going to be good.
By the way, if you have not seen the movie, there really is a lack of action. I rented it a while ago and I felt ripped off. I expected more from Harrison Ford. Really looking forward to it.

I agree. Plus, also giving one to the correct guesser just ushers the random movie title guessers right back in, which is one thing I think we all want to avoid.
Good deal. Smilin' Jack definitely deserved this one. Nice work, SJ.
just PM one of us when you wanna cash in the free RiffTrax, (might even use it today for Dr. Moreau?)

Wow. Thanks Disembaudio! I really wasn't expecting to get the MVP here.
Thanks to everyone who asked meaningful questions. And a special shout out to Steve-O for keeping tally.
Well i thought Firewall. was a o.k. movie. Not great but not really bad either. The thing with Harrison Ford his he plays these guys in bad situation in almost every movie. Except Star Wars and indiana jones. if they did pick Batman begins. I dont think i would bother hear it get riffed. No offence but it is one of favorite movies and the last they did a movie i really liked (aka X-men). It wasnt that good.

Well, I did ask the PG-13 question too. As long as it's stated that the correct guesser doesn't automatically get the free trax, I think we're on the right track.
You deserve it! I was still scratching my head by the end there.
I think we all know how to play a better game now! Personally I think genre questions may not be that helpful. Doesn't do as efficient a job at eliminating movies as range-cutting types of questions (concerning alphabetic placement of movie, year of movie, number of words, and so forth), especially considering how genres can be blurred sometimes.
Firewall is pretty terrible. Every thing plot related is either incredibly obvious or improbable and Harrison Ford looks borderline catatonic half the time. A big juicy 18% on the rottentomato meter. My favorite quote about it, and it's right on the money:
"Put Alan Thicke in the lead role of Firewall and, without changing one line of dialogue, the flick would debut at 9pm Eastern on ABC's Movie of the Week."

Yes, but considering they use the imdb to answer these questions, you can check to see what they classify it as (they usually list multiple genres). At first I thought it could be Flightplan, but when I looked closer, it has action listed as a genre. When doing the power search, genre really helps.
Hey, who was the MVP last week?
I have seen Firewall, but I was more excited about it, not because of the acting or the story, but because of the places I could point out that I knew, since I live near Seattle.
I was like, "Hey, there's the Alaskan Way viaduct, that's gonna collapse any day now"
and "oh there driving out into the country parts of Western Washington. I wonder if they're in Carbonado yet?"
Then it showed them in like the middle of the desert, and I was confused because I said to myself, "Hey, there are no deserts in Western Washington, and I seriously doubt they drove the 3 hour drive to Yakima."
Oh yeah, feeling pretty good about this one. ;D
I heard he hacks an ipod.

I disagree- there was an underlying creepy, almost fascist pathos to it that you never get on TV. That script was the product of a disturbed mind, I tell you.
