Blatant Advertisement: Announcing RiffNotes
« on: July 06, 2008, 01:19:23 PM »
Please accept my apologies in advance.  I hate advertisements.  If necessary, please feel free to hold your nose as you read further (I'm pinching mine even as I write).

I'd like to announce the maiden voyage of a new project, which I'm calling RiffNotes.

RiffNotes is a collection of notes, annotations, web links, side-by-side picture comparisons, etc., intended to accompany the RiffTrax commentaries.

The project idea was hatched one evening while watching Riffs with some friends.  I noticed that I was frequently having to explain the meaning of certain jokes, especially when the riff in question involved a reference to an actor, a parodied line from another movie, etc.

When I started compiling notes on these kinds of riffs, not only did I find that the RiffTrax became more enjoyable, I also found a new appreciation for the intellectual "edge" of the brand of humor produced by Mike, Kevin, and Bill.

To date, I've finalized and published two RiffNotes files: one for the short, The Terrible Truth, and one for Raiders of the Lost Ark.  Many, many more are coming.  The shorts RiffNotes will always be free to those who request it.  The next three RiffNotes in the pipe are 300, The Sixth Sense, and I Am Legend.

I'm hoping this project will make the RiffTrax experience even more enjoyable, and also increase the audience's appreciation for the cleverness of what Mike, Kevin, and Bill are doing.  The site also promotes RiffTrax products heavily (obviously), so ... here's hoping for a infinite loop.

You can visit the site here: http://riffnotes.blogspot.com

Thank you for your patience with this blatantly self-serving commercial.  As a token of my repentance, I'm offering a free copy of the Raiders PDF to the first 10 people who request it.  Send an email to riffnotes@gmail.com with the subject line "Free RiffNotes for Raiders".

In my day, we had to actually be intelligent and versed in pop culture and in the world around us when we watched our Rifftrax. AND I HAD TO WALK 15 MILES TO SCHOOL IN THE SNOW UP HILL BOTH WAYS!!!

Seriously, I think this is a good idea. Well done!

Now that's a good Idea, there are a few like that out there for MST3K. :)

Would you like me to add you to the index (normally I just do that but generally it's for actual fan created riffs)?

Great idea!  Yes, please, add me to the index (as long as we understand that "the index" does not refer to the Inquisition's Index of Forbidden Books).

Figuring out the references was always the fun part of MST3k.  This would ruin the fun for me.

I agree to a point.  I'd like to have the option of looking something up if I should so choose.  It doesn't happen often when listening to riffs but once in a while I get curious where certain jokes come from.

Yep, same here.  I've almost completed two full Riffs (Raiders of the Lost Ark and 300), and I have to say ... some of these references took a bit of time and research to pull together.  I don't mind doing a quick Google search for an actor's name once in a while if I don't know who the riffers are referring to, but for some of these references ... I wish I had a cheat-sheet like the ones I'm putting together.

But I can understand, too, why certain people would say that this takes all the fun out of it.  I'm probably in that same category.  These cheat sheets are for people in the other category, who just want a fast way to look it up.

Honestly, so far I'd say the most immediate value in these notes I'm compiling is in the side-by-side picture comparisons ... e.g., in 300, when Ephialtes (the hunchback) appears and Kevin says, "Is that Clint Howard?", I stuck a picture of both Ephialtes and Clint Howard side by side in the notes - and it's immediately funny, just seeing the two of them side-by-side.

Raven - maybe you'd be interested in assisting me on some of these RiffNotes in the future?
