The Best Piano Pop Songs
« on: June 01, 2008, 06:02:11 PM »
What would you say are the best rock/pop songs wherein the piano is a prominent instrument?  Specifically, I'm thinking of songs that, in addition to being rock/pop songs, have very impressive and complicated sounding piano arrangements.  Such as "Prelude/Angry Young Man" and "Root Beer Rag" by Billy Joel, "Mess" and "The Ascent Of Stan" by Ben Folds (Five), and pretty much anything by Elton John.

"Jason, Chess is a game of chance."
-- My friend Shawn to my friend Jason upon being defeated at a game of Chess.

Yes, Tiny Dancer by Elton John is a bloody great song.  I also quite like Marc Cohn's Walking in Memphis.

If you're going with Ben Folds, I've always been partial to the first Ben Folds Five album.  Alice Childress and Philosophy are my two favorite tracks from that.

Joe Jackson's Steppin' Out is pretty goddamned catchy. I also like Ben Folds Five's Underground and Jackson Cannery, Fiona Apple's Shadowboxer & Sleep To Dream, and Radiohead's You & Whose Army?

This is my favorite genre of music so here you go...you want impressive piano eh?

Ben Folds: Philosophy (my sister got the sheet music for this song, and it only shows the first few measures, the rest is just an explanation on how he played it and what key he is in, because there are too many notes to put on a page in this song)

Ben Folds: Rockin' The Suburbs

Ben Folds: Such Great Heights (cover) Skip to 4:00 minutes of this song to hear some crazy synth going on

Ben Folds: Army (I love this song live more than you hear it on the cd)

As much as I like Elton John, this particular cover is now the definitive version for me.

Nothing is more fun than going to a Ben Folds concert, and nothing is more fun at a Ben Folds concert than participating in this song.  (and "Not the Same" of course.)
