Back in action!

MST3K Episode K19: Hangar 18

The Movie:  A team of astronauts venture into space only to have a fender bender with a UFO. The collision kills one of their crew by beheading him in space... somehow.

The remaining 2 crew members return home to find that (Surprise, surprise) the government doesn't want to let the public know about he UFO. Especially not during an election year. Instead, they're chalking up the death to the incompetance of NASA and the remaining crew.

The Remaining Crew:

It also turns out that the UFO landed on Earth, but it vanished before anyone could see it. Except this guy.

And who's going to believe HIM?

Now it's up to the 2 astronauts to uncover the cover-up while being marked for death by the Government because they know too much. At least about the UFO.

The Episode: We're running at full steam now. The riffs are frequent and funny and the host segments feel more scripted and better planned. Although there is the odd revalation that crow is a "Hermaphrobot." And that Joel gives the bots "Mid-morning pleasure stimulations. Although that's probably more innocent than it sounds.

Overall: While there weren't any "Knock-it-out-of-the-park" riffs in this episode, the overall riffing was much more solid and cohesive, without too much dead space. The host segments are getting more familiar and could have fit in just fine during any season of MST3K. The movie itself was actually pretty watchable. There's genuine intrigue and suspense going on while the movie plays, and Joel and the Bots work with it instead of around it.

Rating: 7 out of 10. Not the best episode, but nothing wrong with it either.

Favorite Riff: Tom: Uncle Fester! AHHHHHHHHH!

There's a chance. The factor that was eating into our free time is gone now, only to be replaced by the fact that we're having our baby soon. It's all still on our to-do list, we're just going to have to learn the new rhythm of our life first. :^)
