I especially loved the "ubiquitous villain" riff, as my roommate and I always joke about Sean Bean never getting to play a good guy, beside the Sharpe's series.

Yeah, Sean Bean is such an excellent actor, but he always receives really bad roles. At least in the Sharpe series his talents surface (Btw, here's an easter egg for you: supposedly he likes to use the word "sharp" in his dialogue in most of his other movies as a jab at his popular role ). Of course, his best role has to be Alec Trevelyn in GoldenEye.

I remember reading about that somewhere. Thus, Boromir nicking himself on the shards of Narsil: "Still sharp." I can't recall any others, but I'll have to look for them. Darn, I have to watch GoldenEye again.  ;) Not rewatching The Island, though.

So in-between riffs i would start to take an interest in the movie before being pulled back out of the experience by the Rifftrax. There wasn't a nice harmonic convergence... ya' know, in my opinion.

I have to agree.  Maybe the problem is that I'd not seen LOTR before watching it with Rifftrax (which is the case with 99% of the movies they choose to do) and, though tedious in a couple places and a bit too long, it was well done and interesting.  So, at times, Mike & Kevin's commentary became - dare I say it? - a bit intrusive.  Not as irritating as when the guy behind you at the theater explains everything that's going on to his kid, but still...I'm definitely now an advocate of the "don't riff good movies" school of thought.

Having said all that, I really did enjoy this Rifftrax; it's one of their best ones yet for the snort-out-loud experience!

Awwwww, they were so mean to Sam!  Not nearly enough vitriol for Pippin and Merry!

Way to take on Mt. Everest, Mike and Kevin.  Obi-Wan watched this at two in the morning and he was on the floor over "Just draining the little Hobbit!"

Well, I kind of have a rule that if I haven't seen the movie,  I watch it without the rifftrax first, so I can avoid any feelings of "distraction".

My group and I gave up on this one after we went a good 15 minutes or so with zero laughs.

Note to self: stick to non-family appropriate rifftrax for edgier riffing.

Wasn't as "family friendly" as it was all made out to be.  Sure the language was toned down but the subject matter was still a bit mature.  *shrug*  Maybe I'm just a prude.

Yeah, I was kind of surprised that they worked around "hell" and "ass", but "nocturnal emission" was still OK.  It seemed a little weird.

Just finished it: loved it.

"I was once chased by Ring Wraiths. Yeah, they tried to get me to listen to Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees and stuff."
"Did they ride horses, Mike?"
"Err...no, actually. They rode the 21 bus."
"Mike, those weren't Ring Wraiths, those were Goths."
"Oh. That would explain the huge Doc. Martins."

OOOweeee.  That was some Rifftrax!  Mike and Kevin deserve some sort of award for the longest comedy riff in history.  Imagine the strain of having to come up with something funny to say every minute or less for THREE HOURS!  My hats off too ya!  How many cups of coffee and Dolly Madison Hostess Cakes did that one take to complete?  Did Kevin start going "Mommy, mommy!" like he did after the Gamera Playset host segment way back when?  Ha!  Great Job guys!  I loved every minute!

agreed.

Now, after all that: It's my opinion that in order to watch a three hour film you must actually be interested in the plot. So in-between riffs i would start to take an interest in the movie before being pulled back out of the experience by the Rifftrax. There wasn't a nice harmonic convergence... ya' know, in my opinion.

I'm still not a fan of riffing good movies, though. And again, that's just my opinion... i know that some of you kids out there love that sorta' thing. So, while the jokes were great (i laughed quite a bit), i actually prefer a nice mindless piece of film that i cold care less about. This epic was just too much for me...

100% agreed. it's not that this was bad,but LOTR is an epic movie that actually expects you to pay attention.

the riffs are MUCH better on movies that don't expect too much from you.

Wow.  For the first time in my entire MST/Legend/Rifftrax viewing experience, I had to turn it off from being bored and uninterested.  I lasted 30 mins, and mildly chuckled twice.  I WILL complete this Rifftrax, but I just can't get into it.  I'm not sure what's missing, exactly...  Perhaps I like the film too much?  Maybe I'm waiting for them to really rip into something/someone?

This Rifftrax could very well be my first ever "thumbs down" to anything that Mike Nelson has done.

I guess they can't ALL be gems, but there's still 2 1/2 hours to go...we'll have to see. :-[

But as for the riff, I'm loving it so far.  However, I would not consider this to be a child-safe riff, JProof, because Kevin Murphy does use a lot of innuendo which isn't exactly family-friendly.

As I recall, he's not playing a particularly bad guy in Ronin
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That role showed off his ability to play sort of nervous and incompetent without making it malicious.
