MST3k taping process
« on: May 31, 2008, 08:40:00 PM »
I recently saw a 'behind the scenes' look at MST3K & they showed how they used chroma-keying [sp?] for their silhouette technique.
What I'm wondering, was there an offscreen monitor of the final composite there for Joel/Mike, Crow & Tom to see?
Whenever Joel would interact with the screen I'd always assumed they could see the movie but this wasn't explained in
the 'behind the scenes' feature.

thanks.
longtime fan.

I believe there was a tv monitor with the chroma-keyed view of them right below them to watch the movie.

if you watch the rough cuts that are available online you can see them watching monitors via what looks like mirrors that are angled towards the monitor.

One thing I have always wondered. If the chromakey screen is all white, are they staring at an all white screen for hours at a time?

They'd be filming one for hours at a time, but the actor's attention would stay on the monitors

Notice in the beginning of City Limits how Joel is looking off to the left as he tries to place the umbrella over the flashes of nudity...

Good eye, I'd never noticed that.  Straightforward weatherman technique there.
