Thoughts.
« on: August 24, 2006, 03:03:04 PM »
I just saw this movie with the rifftrax and more than any of the other movies, it recalled MST3K.  Its easily the worst film that Mike has riffed for Legend so far and even though he tries his best (and is very funny in places), the overwhelming awfulness of Plan 9 even seems to subdue him.  The advantage MST3k had over rifftrax is the host segments which gave a chance for the audience to take a deep breath outside of the movie before soldiering on, but here, taken in one fell swoop (as I perhaps, stupidly decided upon) Ed Wood's most famous film practically begs you to press eject on the DVD player and frisbee the disc out of the window (which would look a lot like the "UFO's" in Plan 9, just without the nipples).  Thank the Lord for Mike, without whom I would've surely ended up driving my head into the monitor.  I didn't ask for Tor Johnson-neck-fat jokes, but I was very glad when they arrived.

Overall : B.  (Just no more this bad, please Mike?)

I think you will notice the Rifftrax "classics" are more of a commentary style as apposed to riffing. I beleive they did this because they were marketing their color remakes of these movies to a broader audience.

Wheras rifftrax is geared towards the MST3K people.

I'm certain Mike assumed he'd nab a bunch of them, but I'm pretty sure he's after a much wider auddience than just the fans of a show that's been off the air for almost a decade, or he'd still be doing the same crappy schlock films that were riffed back in MST3K's day. :P

When I listened to Mike's riff on Plan 9 while watching the video.google version, it did feel like Mike was 'holding back' a bit. In effect, he knew his audience and Mike was being cautious at points not to sound like a fanboy. Although he knew a little too much about Tor Johnson's private life to be catering to the straights in that moment. Mike just couldn't help make digs at the swedish wrestler with neck fat. There was another point where Mike purposefully points out some other guy actually had a career outside Plan 9 and managed to do some good movies, but I've since forgotten which loser Mike was referring to or what movies he mentioned. I mean the guy was in Plan 9. It's like Elizabeth Berkeley's permanent Showgirls scar. You never live something like that down. Mike also seemed to painfully avoid saying anything remarkably memorable about Vampira. That could be cuz last I checked the woman was still alive somewhere, and may still be litigation happy. She tried suing Elvira after all. Mike probably knew to give her a wide berth.
My wishlist: Leonard Part 6, Gigli, Shanghai Surprise, Mannequin, Supercross, Spice World, Pluto Nash, Angel Heart, Ghost Dad, Flashdance, Home Alone, Lifeforce, Maximum Overdrive, Phantasm, Poltergeist 3, Pretty Woman, Robocop, Sixth Sense

Movies I don't want Riff'd
any Tom Cruise movies. Yuck

Is there a difference between the "Classic Rifftrax" downloadable commentary and the commentary on the DVD?

And how "Riffy" is it?

I used the Rifftrax for the Plan 9, so it was pretty riffy.  I bought the NOTLD on DVD, and it had the same amount of material, maybe even more.

Cool, I guess I'll get the DVDs then.  Especially since they're "Signed Mike Nelson Limited Editions." :D

Yeah, I personally choose to stick with the DVDs in the case of the Legend Films title, and buy the RiffTrax downloads for stuff that isn't already on the discs. One of the added bonuses is that, being a big cult movie buff, I get to own some great-looking prints of films that haven't been treated very well on DVD, print-wise (especially The Little Shop of Horrors - every version of that film I've seen before the Legend Films edition looked and sound like the distributors fished their prints out of a dumpster).
This iRiff will only be on sale for another few hours. Get it while it's cheap!

The tracks are the same except for Disembaudio.

May as well. No sync worries etc. My only complaint is that you are forced to watch the color versions of a couple of them if you want Mike's track. The plan 9 looks way better than my old Rhino version.

My response was in question to someone asking about the quality of the Legend DVD's, and the comparison between Mike's commentary for them and for the Rifftrax he produces here.   :)

I just can't get over the cardboard and plywood "cockpit" in the airplane...

complete with shower curtain! Or the cemetary, complete with cardboard headstones, and trees that will fall over if you touch them.

Look out for the saucers on strings! The old Flash Gordon TV show had better special effects!

It's pretty crappy but God help me I love it. I have since I was 10. That being said I will probably never watch it without Mike's commentary track ever again but I still love it.

It is truly the worst movie I have ever seen. But its so bad, its entertaining.
I also think its time to pull this one out again to watch in spirit of the Halloween season.

Aliens who resurrect the dead...its perfect for Halloween.
