Anyone else sick of these stupid phone-in quiz shows?
« on: November 16, 2006, 07:14:08 PM »
I'm sure some of us here have seen them. Those irritating game shows where some jobbing actor stands around in a garishly coloured set, mugging and pointing towards a puzzle/question/riddle on the screen, and asking you to phone in and guess the answer for the chance of winning some free cash. Which go on throughout the entire night after Midnight.

I didn't mind when it was just on one channel, but now it seems half the damn stations have these sort of game shows, even the music ones. What the hell happened to late-night films, repeats, music videos running through the night? Something for us night owls, or those who work late and want to catch a show or two to relax. Now it's nothing but these moronic, money-spinning wastes of time. Who actually wants to watch these shows all night? The least the networks could do is cut them down to about an hour or two, or just play them in the later hours after 1pm.

I just can't stand them. Some of us actually want random stuff to watch late at night, you know?

Are you from the UK? 'cause they've infected a lot of the channels here too.  Even local radio has them on.

You can watch a 24 hour streaming channel of this from the UK at http://play.itv.com/watchnow.aspx .

This channel is pretty stupid.  At least the people that call in to them are pretty stupid.

I'm sick of TV in general, which includes all the fad shows. We got digital cable recently but I think we only watch 5 channels out of all 300+ channels we have. Mostly because most of them are annoying.

And am I alone when I say that I really, really, really desperately hate American Idol?

I don't really care about American Idol, but The X Factor (UK version of Idol) is a guilty pleasure of mine.  I wish they would bring the X Factor format to the US for Idol.  I imagine they would at some point.

American Idol is a Americanized version of Pop Idol (a UK show). That being said I wish you guys would stop making shows for us to rip off over here. "Who Wants to Be A Millionaire, Deal or No Deal, Big Brother etc...."  At first we were content just by stealing your sitcoms, All in the Family, Three's Company, The Office, Sanford and Son now we have to have your game shows too!

True, but Pop Idol only lasted for 2 seasons in the UK, before being pretty much replaced by X Factor (now in it's third season).

Fox bought the US rights to X Factor, but basically to keep them from the other networks.  I'd guess that the first season that Idol's ratings start to drop, they will switch to the X Factor format.

And yes, I know too much about this subject.   :P

Why people are so stupid, as to play these is beyond me?
Same thing with buying crap off infomercials/QVC, why!?

Ohh, and how about those freeking tv ads for cell phone wallpapers & ringtones! man I hate those, if anyone ever shows me one of these in an attempt to "show off" their cool background I swear to God...

And my all time favorite- 1-900 numbers (Ms. Cleo isn't even Jamaican!) Ohh and before I forget, has anyone seen the new ads charging for text messages to 'hot singles'... who is dumb enough to believe (or even care) that hot singles are text messaging their cell phone? WTF!!!!!!!

Edit: Crap, I forgot to rant about the cell phone: "joke of the day" scam. For the low cost of 3 bucks a day you can receive some lame joke that you could've easily have found on the internet... for free!!  :'(

Yeah. As a customer care rep for a cell phone company, let me assure you that the cell phone companies see not a penny of those charges, and there are scams that will milk you for like- 3 bucks a day until you have something upward of $100 in premium  text charges on the bill. Not cool, and not a thing your cell phone company can do about it. :^)

I always watch the audition episodes for the complete failures that think they can sing. Once they go to Hollywood I could give a rat's ass. The one show I did watch all the way through was WB's Superstar! That was the meanest, cruelest show ever and I loved it! They told everyone that they were good singers when in fact they sucked big time! The goal was to find the worst singer of all. That show was a train wreck you couldn't turn away from!

The American version of the The Office is fantastic.  Not quite as cringe-inducing as our version (the episode where David Brent goes to open nightclub because of his newfound "celebrity" is priceless), but still hilarious every week.

There are still a lot of cringe-inducing scenes though! The only thing that bugged me on this week's show was the blatant staples product placement of a the shredder. They show the scene with Kevin who is all excited about what it can shred and then the next commercial break has a staples ad for the same shredder!

But since they had already mentioned that the branch manager was leaving Dunder Mifflin to take a job with Staples and we also watched Kevin realize that he'd gotten so caught up with the shredder that he destroyed his own credit card, I felt the real commercial added to the joke.  There will be many more product placements coming up in NBC's future, though, and most of them will suck.

Minnesota, you mentioned the phone messages from hot chicks, who of course wouldn't be caught dead making those messages.  The best of these "chat lines" spots did introduce us to Evangeline Lilly before Lost. If that dumb ad helped her get the ABC job, that's at least one positive for those spots. If you've never seen the ad it's on YouTube, of course.
