I had myself a double dose of MST3K yesterday:  The Sinister Urge and The Beatniks.  As a movie, The Sinister Urge is pretty bad, but in a fun way, just as I find the Ed Wood films I've seen so far to be.  I felt sorry for the actress wanna-be and her fate, so Ed elicited an actual emotional reaction from me, besides amusement.  Ed also amused me by slipping in a poster of his The Bride of the Monster, along side such quality films as The Violent Years and Jail Bait.  I loved Frank's diabolical scheme to blow-up Deep 13, and the guys playing detectives to find a way to stop him.  Mike scolding him:  "Frank, you stop your terrorist activities right now."

Favorite lines:
Crow: "He is serious - those are definitely pinking shears."
After guy gets shot - Crow (I think): "Oh, right in the sinister urge."
"I'm learning a lot about porn."
"The coffee table - bought with the souls of young girls."

So, Sinister Urge, "I toast your sleaziness," by giving this a grade A.

The Beatniks (featuring no actual Beatniks) is just bad.  Although I will say, at least Tony (fill in the blank, 'cause I've already forgotten the actor's name) had a nice singing voice.  The Sinister Urge might make into my top 20 favorite list, but not The Beatniks (Said list is a work in progress.)  However it does include one of my now favorite host segments - Joel abusing Crow and Sevro with "rock, paper, scissors" and Gypsy coming to their rescue.  "Gypsy crushes Joel!"  Ah, my love for Gyspy keeps getting affirmed.

Favorite lines:
"Beatnik music is really square."
"He's an evil Gilligan."
"Isn't that interesting.  He took 10% out of the agent."
And, of course, "Gypsy crushes Joel!  My babies!"

Beatniks gets a B-.

Just Watched Pod People (It Stinks!!!) and Teenage Strangler (Didn't steal no bike neither!)

I love how in teenage strangler, they immediately suspect the alleged bike stealer, as capable of murder. Well he stole a bike when he was younger, so it MUST be him that is strangling those poor girls, not the creepy janitor that nobody talks to.

I found out the movie was filmed in Huntington, West Virginia. My grandmother lives near there between Huntington and Point Pleasant. I did a double take at the credits when I saw that.

I'm also guessing little Mikey in that film grew up to be Charles Nelson Riley....

"Manos" The Hands of Fate   - "That's not how you wear your Depends, Torgo."

Hired! Part 2 has become one of my favorite shorts - the old guy putting his hankerchief on his head cracked me up - so random and inane.  The riffs during the movies are fun, though I have a feeling that a lot of times, the guys decided that some points of the movie itself are so unintentionally funny that they let those parts ride on their own.

I think the best parts of the episode are the host segments, especially Joel and the 'bots coming up with their own monsters with exaggerated body parts - "I'd have one really big flared nostril.  And inside there'd be lots of red, matted hair."  Plus, the DVD has the Poopie Real - sweet!

Hercules Unchained

Herc: "That's the second time you've knocked over my goblet!"
Crow: "How would he remember that?"

As we're still unboxing stuff from storage, I found Riding with Death in the bottom of one of the boxes last night. And was able to get mellow with Ben Murphy, the elusive Robert Denby and even Jim Stafford!

Last night I watched one of my favorite episodes, "The Dead Talk Back".

While watching it I noticed that the "actor" playing the detective looked and sounded EXACTLY like Bill Kurtis (host of many shows like "American Justice").    Sadly, I looked it up on IMDB and it was not him.

Operation Double 007
Ah, you have GOT to love the Italian spy movies of the 60's.    They sure cranked them out.

I think the producers were confused if they wanted to pretend that they were a Bond movie or not.   They had the "shirley bassie-like" shrill theme song (that the boys really riffed on), the babes, the gadgets, etc.    They even had the lady who played MoneyPenny, some of the other british guys, the main bond villian, and Connery's brother Neil.

I found it weird that they called him "the brother of our best agent", but when they called him by name, they called him Neil Connery.    Why not Neil Bond?    They also made reference to Ian Flemming books which was odd as well.

I loved how they dubbed Neil's voice (in the generic Hercules manner).   He must have one thick Scottish accent.

I just finished watching "King Dinosaur". Ok riffing, a little slower because it was the early seasons. I'm thinking of staying away from more of the early few seasons from now on. Their just not as funny. And I don't care what ANYONE says, Joel isn't funny in the sketches. The Joey the Lemer song was painful to watch.

Does anybody know of some episodes in the first two seasons that are really good? I hate to dismiss them so easily.

Prince of Space:  I'd actually forgotten how good an episode it was.  Some great riffs, combined with a some very funny host segments make this one of the best.  In other words, "I LIKE IT VERY MUCH."

The Day The Earth Froze

Gotta love the opening bit, with all the Minnesota speak! My Dad was raised in Minneapolis, and he always gets a major kick when they go off on a Northern tangent!

Also gotta love those crazy Finnish myth-based movies! They make absolutely NO SENSE WHATSOEVER!! I think Crow said it best in Jack Frost: So the premise of this movie is everyone is just nuttier than all get out, huh?  ;D
