Joe Camel (Camel cigarettes) Vs. The La Choy Dragon (La Choy)

VIDEO UNAVAILABLE

Joe Camel was actually born in Europe. The caricatured camel was created in 1974 by a British artist, Nicholas Price, for a French advertising campaign that subsequently ran in other countries in the 1970's. Indeed, Mr. O'Toole recalled a visit to France many years ago during which he glimpsed Joe Camel wearing a Foreign Legion cap. The inspiration behind Mr. Price's cartoon was the camel, named Old Joe, that has appeared on all Camel packages since the brand's initial appearance in 1913.

The La Choy Dragon appeared in TV ads for La Choy from 1965 to 1967. The dragon's full name is Delbert the La Choy Dragon. Though originally built as a full-bodied character to engage with actors in a supermarket setting, a live-hand version was used in later spots with Mert, a meek, bespectacled Muppet spokesman, as his foil.

Well, so is the La Choy dragon, but in a good way.  I'm voting for him because there aren't any cartoons that show him dying of cancer.
Correction: the coat hanger should be upside down.

The ballsyness of the tobaccco companies creating Joe Camel is enough to get my vote.

Anyone who votes for a cigarette mascot over a MUPPET will surely burn in hell.

I saw a Jim Henson exhibit with a few of the La Choy commercials.  They were hilarious.

I never did like Joe Camel.  I don't see how he "appeals to kids."  He's kinda swearmy and weird, like a perverted uncle.

Never seen the dragon before so familiarity makes me vote for Joe.

Never heard of the La Choy Dragon before this very moment, though that commercial is a hoot.

It's all about J.C. in this one.  I appreciate the audacity of creating a cartoon character to market cancer sticks to children, and then compounding that audacity by making the character's face a stack of assorted genitals.

A dragon would eat a camel actually, wouldn't he. I want to see that happen. Someone, make it so!
