Do NOT use the Collector's Edition with the Rifftrax Player
« on: February 10, 2008, 09:20:22 PM »
Whne you select "Play" on the Collector's Edtion of Jurassic Park, there's a promo of Universal Movies availble on DVD that comes and screws up the synchronization.

I'm not sure if that is the exact cause, but the collector's edition is indeed off.

I was thinking about that. I have what is labelled "Collectors Edition" and there is a short. I find that skipping chapters fixes the synchronization problem, but after awhile it gets off-sync again. I thought this might be due to my dvd player "skipping" here and there, but I bought this dvd back in around 2001 and it was the only jurassic park dvd that was being sold. It's disappointing that they wouldn't forsee this being an issue. Any further word on this?

This is the set I have.  All three films for one low price.  I haven't had the time to watch JP yet though, so I don't know how it works in the player.

The collector's edition doesn't work well with normal "please pause the track" synching either.

I'm not sure where or why it gets thrown off.

We used the Collectors Edition to create the Riff and .riff, so there shouldn't be a problem with it...

The only difference I can find on my boxes is that the collectors edition is in DTS and the other version is Dolby Digital surround.  I'm not enough of an audiophile to even know what that means for synching purposes.

There is an amazon.com post that says the bass is accidentally removed from some of the early DTS disks (they say PEMC-D2R0 or PEMC-D2R1 on the inner disk).  I really don't see what that would matter for synching though. It'd just make it sound like crap.

It looks like both are 127 minutes though.  It can't be that something is added.

I just popped mine out to look at it and it's one of those defective, R1 disks as described here:
http://www.thedigitalbits.com/reviews/jurassicpark.html
(look at 8/2/01 - DTS Update)
and here:
http://www.videophile.info/Graphs/JP/JP_01.htm

Would that even matter at all?  I wouldn't think it would, but it's odd that the rifftrax was recorded using this version and there was an obvious drift every time I tried to synch.  I haven't tried to reauthor it and I have the other DVD.  It worked fine.  I just assumed Rifftrax used the later release.

The montage on my collector's edition isn't a chapter of the movie, if you hit the chapter skip button when the promo starts does it jumps to the Universal logo?

I wonder if some disks have a different montage that got authored into chapter 1?  Or it's a bootleg disk.....

I got mine when the disk first came out, the newest movies I recognize in the promo on mine are The Mummy, Erin Brockovich, and Jurassic Park.

Edit: I've got the Dolby 5.1 version, not the DTS one, maybe they authored the chapters different on the DTS disk?

I think the montage occurs before the actual movie itself though. YOu skip the montage to get to the main menu.

Well, there's this one:

That's the version I have. It's just a repackaging of the Collector's Edition.

Bottom line, the .riff file doesn't work well for this movie. Both times I watched it, I did the manual syncing, and I even had trouble with that. I would press play right when the Universal logo faded to black, but the first sync line would be WAAAAAY off. Using my own judgement, I would pause for a couple of seconds and then unpause when I thought it was ready. When I finally got it all synced up, it worked perfectly for the rest of the movie, but the beginning is always rocky.

Bottom line -- I think the beginning is flat out wrong. MP3 version and .riff version.

I rented the collector's edition for this, and every time I watched it, it would jump out of sync right at the beginning of the second chapter, to the point of cutting the middle out of one of the riffs (the one about buried car keys, I think).  I'd just wait a few moments and then skip back to the beginning of the chapter and it would get right back in sync, but it did seem a little strange.
I thought I was Dale.
