Rhino did an excellent job on the packaging for the MST3K DVDs. Will we still be seeing that?

I also read that Shout! had rights to some of the episodes that Rhino didn't. Does anyone know anything about this?

I'll reserve judgment on this decision until someone comes out with a "Santa Claus / Gamera vs. Guiron / King Dinosaur / SoulTaker" set :P

I second the request for season sets made earlier in the thread. I know, I know. Impossible. But still...

I would have to disagree with you there. I really never liked the box set packages. The single releases were ok except for repeated typos.

They have the rights to all of the episodes. That is to say all of the footage that Best Brains shot. They then have to get the rights to the actual movie being riffed in order to release them.

That would be one hell of a set that is for sure.

New Info from Shout! Factory:

" I'm looking forward to beginning work on this as soon as possible.  Having been a fan of MST3K since its beginning and having already produced the four Film Crew titles, I can't wait.

You will never see season volumes of the series, I'm afraid.  That is, unless there's someone with REALLY DEEP pockets that just want to do it without the hopes of receiving a profit.  The films came from multiple studios and copyright owners and no one company can afford to license every single movie ever addressed by the MST3K gang in a single season.  That, sadly, includes us.

But we are ironing out some awesome plans for the upcoming first set and will start officially working on it very soon.  I promise you MST3K fans that you will NOT be disappointed.

Brian"

That is cool. I just hope if they get a defective master tape from BBI (Dead Talk Back anyone??) they just say no and move on to the next.  They really need to examine the masters before licensing the movie.

This sounds interesting. They say that ALL of the episodes are headed towards DVD/download. Could that mean that the fans are finally going to get access to the first 3 (or 4 if you count the concept episode) KTMA episodes?
And I agree that a season by season system would be better, but it seems unlikely.

I have never g got a Rhino disc that didn't have a problem of some kind, they rarely had any extras, and they where hard to find.

So i think this is good news.

Shout! did a better job with the four film crew discs then Rhino did on any of the MST3K discs.

I only ever had one problem with Rhino's discs, but it was a pretty major one.  Pod People snapped in half when I first took it out of the case.  Very annoying!

Anyways, like I've said before: If Shout Factory! do put out volumes like Rhino did, I would like them to keep to the volume numbering system that Rhino had.  I think full season box sets would probably take too long in getting all the movie rights, not to mention the cost of the set.

The only problems I had with any of the Rhino discs were with the BBI supplied masters.

Shout! has basically said that there is absolutely no way to do season box sets, it is just too impractical.

Is Shout gonna re-release the episodes that Rhino has already put out, or does Rhino still retain the rights to those episodes?

I cannot imagine that Shout would rerelease the Rhino sets.   If you were in charge of Shout and wanted to sell the most units, you would not rerelease sets that you figure all of your fan base already owns.
