That said, like all the polls, it could be a great way to gauge interest, but it still has a few problems that I think would keep it from being a foolproof way to pick the next movie.  First of all, how do you make sure that voting is kept honest?  Maybe submitting votes by just replying to a thread for each matchup?  I'm not sure, but I think it would be relatively easy to vote many times for a poll, (not that anyone would be so desperate...actually, scratch that...)  And then you still run into the risk that whatever wins turns out not to really work for a riffable movie, and there's no way we could pour through all the choices ahead of time to see what wouldn't work.  Often what trips you up are the things you don't think about like a movie being too talky:  you don't really notice until you look for it.  We'd need a clause like in the Riff-Off where we can use all or part of the winners, but there's no real way to do that here.

What do the rest of you think?

You make some good points.  Perhaps the best way when voting in the polls is to reply in the thread as well.  We'll just have to take people's word that they've voted only once.

As for the choices that we select, and the reasons for and against why they should be selected, I think that's going to be more prominent if the list of films is severely reduced.  I think the forum would consider it an honour if Mike decided to tackle a film that we've suggested, so I would hope that no one would try and ruin the event.  I also think a concentrated look at the forum's tastes and the debate over whether certain films could be a viable rifftrax would be fun.

But you can set polls so they only accept one vote per user, so doesn't that sort out this problem?

OK then, we have the official word from Rifftrax!  Knock yourselves out and maybe, just maybe, the winning film will be considered for an upcoming Rifftrax.  (Unless the winning film is Troll 2, then all bets are off.)

Personally I can't wait for this to start!  I'd love to be able to vote on one of two films and post my reasons for my vote.  Bring it on!!!!!

My two cents worth...
I went through the last posted list and am suggesting some removals from the list with the reason being listed after. Only a few are for an opinion based reason, most are relative scarcity. Just throwing it out there. if they say 'hard to obtain?' that means I am unsure of their commonality but think they may be hard to get. Please correct if they are easy to get!

American Ninja    Hard to obtain?
Big Trouble in Little China    (While I love this movie and would love to see it riffed it has 2 problems in my eyes. Kind of hard to obtain and is already a comedy/satire might be hard to do.)
Blair Witch        Perhaps not Mike's cup of tea. Chock full of F bombs and not much else.
Cabin Fever      Not really up Mike's alley. Really gory (not that I mind that, but for normalized consumption)
Dick Tracy        maybe hard to obtain. Not sure.
Donnie Darko     Perhaps not the proper tone for a Rifftrax. Already a comedy, but of a very different type.
Double Dragon  hard to obtain?
Dungeons and Dragons   Even though I would love to see this one done, probably hard to obtain
Flight of the Navigator      hard to obtain?
Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man    hard to obtain
Mannequin   hard to obtain?
Maters of the Universe   hard to obtain? I know Netflix has it cause it's already in my queue  :)
Maximum Overdrive   Again a great idea but hard to obtain I'd wager
Monkey Shines       Ditto
Purple Rain     hard to obtain?
Prince of Darkness    one of my personal favs, but I know it's kinda scarce already
Streetfighter: The Movie    hard to obtain?
Superman 3 and 4    Hard to obtain?  Are these even avaliable on DVD outside that box set?
Texas Chainsaw: TNG    hard to obtain. and hey, I was the first one to even suggest it I think
They Live!     I LOVE THIS FILM! But I think it's a bit hard to obtain
Trainspotting     wrong tone?
Wall Street    hard to obtain?
Waxworks    hard to obtain   (another I like and suggested)
Xanadu    hard to obtain?
Zardoz      hard to obtain?
Grapes? I hate grapes, I can't stand grapes. I loathe grapes. All kinds of grapes. I hate green grapes and I hate purple grapes. I hate grapes with seeds, I hate grapes without seeds. I hate them peeled and nonpeeled. I hate them in bunches, one at a time and in small groups of twos and threes.

If they are going to be plentiful, then please leave them in play!

American Ninja is in stock at Amazon.  Featuring Michael Dudikoff and his abnormally large, disproportionately-sized fists, if the box art is any indication.  Even better, American Ninja 2 (the greatest of the American Ninja saga, I think we'd all agree) is released on a DVD WITH American Ninja 3 for one low price!

I need to get a raise at work so I can start collecting movies like these.

I found the American Ninja films (well the first 2) to be pretty good for saying thet were American 80's martial arts movie, a film type that generally didn't do well outside of the main guys like Van Damme, Seagal and Norris.

Agreed.  Both hugely enjoyable and hugely cheesy.

I want to cast my vote for "Escape from the Planet of the Apes". This is the one where Cornelius and Zira come back to contemporary Earth and become celebrities. But then xenophobia sets in, they become fugitives, and Ricardo Montalbon (as circus-master "Armando") has to help them.

Rich, fertile ground, here...

They're also available in large quantities whervever used DVDs are sold. Can't imagine why...

We can set polls to have a vote-per-person count as well as a time limit.

I think we could figure out a way to eliminate lots of the "problem movies" as has been discussed. The poll would definitely still need to be moderated. The best way to accomplish this, I think, is to have users submit a list of their top choices for movies to be riffed. Maybe, 5 a piece or so (or less?) to keep things somewhat concise. Then we can bring the master list to the people that need to see it, and we can eliminate any that are not doable based on criteria such as availability, mass appeal, bawdiness etc. The final list, maybe of around or near 10-15 movies, would then consist of all movies that are potential riffing candidates and the voting could then commence.

Let me know what you guys think, as I believe this would keep things somewhat orderly and prevent most problems that have been brought up. Discuss!

I think that is great idea torgospizza.  As you had said, 5 or less, I think is key.  I think this could be a big success as long as it is all fairly orderly.

What if we open up a post for one week for people to suggest one movie and one only that they'd like to see Riffed. Then have the Mods take a look and pluck out the no-gos. This should give us a healthy group of suggestions. To go bracket, we need a bracketable amount of candidates (16, 32, or 64 would work.) After we whiddle down the list we open up the voting, first with the 64 candidates, then with the 32, then the 16, the 8, the 4, and then the 2 winners, with the ultimate winner being our numero uno choice. :^) This would require a lot of posts for each competition (I'd reccomend 32, but we might only be able to break it down to 64.) and then each subcompetition afterward. Mayhaps the mods would be nice enough to make a board for the occasion solely for housing the tournaments?

Boy, who thought Capote or Pee-Wee's Big Adventure would make a good rifftrax? Jesus. Making fun of Pee-Wee is like making fun of happiness and joy and Capote is almost the saddest movie ever made, and based on crap that actually happened. Even if you didn't like the movie it would be pretty damn insensitive to do it. If he did Capote then he would have to top that by doing The Killing Fields, Hotel Rwanda, and United 93 while he was at it.

Oh and also Trainspotting is a pretty sad movie too and shouldn't be on the list. No movies with dead baby scenes please.

Um, so in other words, don't do these movies.
