The Rifftrax Playoffs!
« on: November 07, 2006, 06:14:01 PM »

Ok, here's the idea:  Instead of numerous smaller requests for rifftrax, the forum come to a consensus over what film they would like riffed in the near future.  Perhaps if a majority consesus were to reached, the mighty Nelson and Murphy may take heed.  But how do we go about such a monumental task?  How about...

The Ultimate Rifftrax Playoffs!?

Basically, through a series of polls, we match films against one another in terms of genre, era, or actor; the top choice goes through to the next round and so on and so forth, until we reach one movie...one final movie, standing high and proud declaring that it wants to utterly ruined by the riffmasters.

I think we can dismiss trax that have been hinted at by Mike and Kevin (e.g. Lord of the Rings, Coyote Ugly) as it seems we'll be getting those, so we can look at films that perhaps aren't being considered.

What do people think?  It'll probably take most of the board to implement and agree with this, as I doubt 20 people deciding on a rifftrax won't carry too much weight.

20 might be all you get my friend.  However nice of a board this may be, that doesn't mean we agree.  Also, this might take the wind out of the sails of the small requests.  By narrowing it down to one sacrificial lamb to be riffed apart, the rest of the lambs will be left out.

Also, as I recall, there was once a great gathering of support for one director to be riffed.  Back in the day, just about every forum member was in support of an Uwe Boll Rifftrax.  There was not one post of dissent.  So we sat and waited in hopes of having our dreams made true, until some one pointed out that Uwe Boll films don't fit in the Rifftrax criteria, they just weren't accessible enough.

What I'm trying to say is, be careful what you wish for, because you just might not get it.  If you narrow it down to one movie but it's something Mike doesn't want to do, then you're arms are going to fall off from raising that lamb up to the sun all day.

That being said, I'll get behind a movie if it's one I would like to see riffed.

That's where you and I disagree.  I would wholeheartedly support this concept.  And even if the eventual decided upon film is something I personally don't care to see riffed, I would still get behind it because it would be the Roundtable's choice.

I hope MrBasehart follows through and puts together a tournament bracket and everything.  How would we decide which films to put in the tourney??  Perhaps we let each member here pick one title, then whittle it down from there.

I don't think it's that line where we disagree.  That is the line that said if the Riff Playoffs are implemented I would participate.

If each member gets to pick one movie, we'd have about 500 movies if you only count the members that have posted.  That isn't realistic.  I'm sure there is a better way.

At first I though a good way would be to just make one huge poll of all the movies mentioned, but that would be daunting.  However, if you break it up by genre and theme are you doing anything more than what the polls on the front page do?  The polls would have to be substantially different from the front page polls, but still manageable.

If a system can be developed it's not a bad idea, and it could work.  But my fear is that everyone's votes are going to be wasted on something like Troll 2, something Mike will not riff.  It seems very popular amongst some, so there's a good chance it will be chosen.  And if it is, then all this polling and choosing and work will be for naught because it's not Rifftrax material.

My first thoughts in how to proceed with choosing films that we nominate are to use films that Mike would consider.  I think we all have a decent understanding of the guidelines the Mike is using at the moment.  I think one giant poll represents too many immediate choices and so the winning film might really only get 3 or 4 votes.  A series of polls would help the community refine its choice to something that perhaps would stand a reasonable chance of being riffed.

I think the only way to start with the polls is to first define some rules: i.e. That the films we choose are less than 30 years old; that the films are widely available on DVD to all regions, etc.  If we're able to define our poll by the same guidelines that Mike seems to choose his, then I think we might able to make a good case for it's eventual riffing.

And hell, it might be fun!   ;D

I think the best way to do this, that would be all in fun of course, would be to get about 20 possible films and do like a basketball playoff chart with them.  Like "What Lies Beneath Vs Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" and then "Dirty Dancing" vs "Footloose" and then pit the winners of those 20 contests against each other to see who wins.  This is what the original poster was getting at, I'm sure.

The winner may not end up being the cheesiest movie of all time but it would be the one the majority thought was.  It would take some time this way but I think you'd get a better idea of the majority than if you listed all 20 films in a "poll."  Besides, it would give the board something to discuss every week (the pros and cons of the two "riff off" contestants).

I think in this setup, genre doesn't really matter.  You're going to have pick a winner in the end anyway so you might as well suck it up now.  The mini-playoffs could be between genres (ie: 8 of the twenty films are comedies and you pit all those together and get a winner and then pit it against the drama winner) if you like, but I'd like to see an overall winner too.  You could even run several mini-playoffs at the same time.

20 would take forever but you could do a more workable number.  People do this with video game characters on GameSpot and it works (even though some people are passionate about their anime...scarily passionate).  I guess 20 wouldn't be so bad if you ran a few simultaneously, now that I think about it.

And thats the most important thing, it's just a bit of fun so why not try it... wouldn't do any harm... unless someone has an allergy to polls, of course

AmandaGal has the right idea.  We should set this up like a bracket tournament, having a poll for only two movies at a time.  The work would be picking what movies to put up, but I think you could make a list from the other threads and go through them and pick the ones that you think should be included.  I'll vote!

If someone wanted to show REAL commitment, they could filter through the old movie suggestions thread and find out which movies were suggested most often and then stick those in the brackets.  :^)

I, of course, have no such commitment, but I'd love to find out the results of this thing. :^)

Playoff brackets make everything more fun. Hell, it's the only reason anyone gives a crap about college basketball.

Exactly.  I was thinking perhaps more films at the beginning of the poll, but it might possibly become a bit unwieldy.

I will.  Give me a day or so...

This is going to be an extremely long post....   ;D

I've gone through the entire old suggestions thread and made a count of the movies suggested.  I've ignored people who said things like "the entire Steven Seagal filmography" 'cause that's just nuts and concentrated on people who've singled out movies that they'd like to be riffed.  I even used a database sheet in Word and everything!

Oh, in case you didn't feel like counting, there are 516 movies in this list and the numbers that accompany them are the amount of times they were "voted" for.  *deep breath*

Holy crap! Somebody buy this man a pint.

I notice a strong score for my very first suggestion - The X-Files Movie.
