Well as Miranda Richardson's Queenie might say "whose language do you speak?" ;)

I speak American English, the lingual equivalent of Frankenstein.  We take bits of dead languages and cram them together to give life to an ugly monster that no one really understands.

Well, that's exactly what we did too.  When we decided on using the Roman alphabet for the English language, we eventually realized that there weren't enough letters for the sounds of the words, so we just made some up!  And with the subsequent invasions we endured, we picked up pretty much every kind of language there was in Northern Europe and adapted it to English.  It's why it's one of the most flexible (and apparently difficult to learn) languages in the world.

According to teachers I've talked to English is both  1-The most difficult language to learn as a 2nd language, and 2-The language that makes it hardest for native speakers to learn other languages.
