Ok, I'm done.  Sorry bout that.  I've been screwing around with some stuff at work involving the Union.

Maybe I'm a racist, but I can't imagine a large Vietnamese man who could intimidate a whole village like that Bien guy's dad.

 There are a lot of Vietnamese in Lincoln here, and I've seen them working on their cars.  They actually squat inside the hood on the frame of the vehicle while they tinker.  It's really fascinating.  I wish I could do that.

I think that's why he's so intimidating.  I pictured a male and female Sumo team with Bien a bit like an Asian version of D'Onfrio from Full Metal Jacket, only not really crazy.

I mean Asian man/woman mountains do exist, just not that often.

Here's something interspersed amongst the horror and degradation do you find the descriptions of food (aside from THE SOUP ) delicious. My office goes out to lunch at different restaurants every so often, I've been pushing for Vietnamese next time.

We were in Denver at a Vietnamese restaurant and my aunt tried Octopus.  She said it was like eating rubberbands, but yeah the food does sound good and healthy.

You want to eat Squid rather than Octopus which is a bitch to cook.


So is Bien in any way crazy or just crazy like a humongous fox?

Sounds like he is doing whatever he can to get out of fighting without deserting.

Ah but look at what that action might hold for him when it comes to returning home.

I'm not done yet.  Actually, I'm not home yet, so it could be a few days until I get done reading since I don't have the book with me.

Well I don't remember what page to read to now.  I'm at 150 now.
All that talk about the girl he left in the village when he went to war was very sad.  It kinda sorta reminded me of someone from high school.

We were reading to 184. 

But yeah have you got to the bit where he goes to visit her?

It's very sad how life can utterly crush somebody.
