Anyone into BLOWFLY?
« on: May 01, 2008, 12:13:16 AM »
Anybody familiar with Blowfly?

By day in the 60s and 70's he was Clarence Reid a Billboard charting songwriter. By night he became Blowfly the original dirty rapper. He would sing x-rated parodies of popular r&b songs like "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" ("(Shittin' On) The Dock of the Bay") and various other dirty versions of songs.

Any fans on the board?

I've read a lot of articles about him and he sounds like somebody I'd enjoy, where's a good place to start?

I would recommend:

The Best of Blowfly: Analthology

You get two of the best songs, "Rap Dirty" and "Porno Freak".

Weird World of Blowfly is his first and has some of his best parodies. Most of his old stuff is out of print but you can get super cheap mp3 downloads from Amazon of both of those.

If you want Blowfly to actually get paid for entertaining you then pick up any of the last two releases:

Blowfly had poor management and shady labels for his entire 70's output so he got ripped off a lot. A few years ago a friend of mine from high school was interviewing Blowfly for the local New Times and asked him why after living in Miami for 20 years he never played a show and Blowfly responded that he didn't have a band. My friend Tom asked him if he wanted one (he is a drummer) and he put together a band, practiced for a month then brought Blowfly into the studio. They have been touring pretty extensively for the last 5 years since and they put on a hell of a fun show.  My friend Tom is now  his manager, drummer and legal guardian!?!

Here is pic of me and Blowfly in '05. Might not be SFW due to the fact that is a picture of a white guy and a black guy flipping the camera off, while the black guy is wearing a baseball hat with a weird felt vagina on it at the same time said black guy is wearing a thrift store found Disney Eeyore University jacket.

...

One of my old roommates was into Rudy Ray Moore and had a few of his albums. I think that eventually led him to Blowfly somehow... although it must not have left much of an impression on me, because i can't remember anything but the album cover. Might have to give it a listen again sometime soon.

Don't doubt it. They are friends. About 2 weeks after the photo above they came back through Arizona with Rudy Ray Moore opening up for them.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Oh and

One of my old roommates was into Rudy Ray Moore and had a few of his albums.

Me to, which is another reason why I thought I'd like Blowfly.  :)
