My Two Mikes
« on: March 03, 2008, 10:08:01 PM »
Does anyone else think Mike seemed to be a completely different personality after MST3K: The Movie came out ? The change seemed to be starting during the short season 7. I can't really describe what changed, but I liked season 6 Mike better. I heard him say in an interview that Hollywood took what he loved (MST3K) and stepped all over it. I've been pondering if this was the reason for his change of approach and tone to his character.

The real shift that I saw was between MST3K Mike and Rifftrax Mike, as even at the end of MST3K's run he still had his kind of easygoing laid-back calming center type of personality to his character that he doesn't need to play up for Rifftrax, letting him just cut loose and be mean when he has to/wants to.  I think the whole show might have become a touch harsher toward the end, especially in the Sci-Fi Channel years, but I never saw it as coming from Mike personally.

The real change was when Mike quit using his high pitched voice.

If there was a noticeable difference in the way the character of Mike was behaving, I think it was probably due to the different direction in which the show took the skits during the sci-fi years.

It always felt to me like after the movie the show got an eensy bit more risque. Still mostly family friendly, but they seemed to try to get away with just a little more.

Yeah, exactly what I was thinking. Just like Crow's voice mellowed over the course of the CC years, Mike's voice seemed to calm down and not sound so up-beat and goofy. It's understandable, though, since Mike was relatively new to the hosting gig leading up to the 7th season.
