Anyone remember Blockbuster?

What happens to people and the films they've 'bought' when that happens to UltraViolet and other cloud-based film depositories?  (Yes: when, not 'if'.)

[I know the answer, by the way.  It just confounds me how people can ignore this when assembling a digital-only 'collection'.]

Almost none of this makes any sense to me

Blockbuster seemed like they were going to be around forever, but they weren't.

When Vudu or other streaming websites die, what happens to all the movies you purchased through them?  We can only assume that they will all disappear.

By the time those companies go away we will have probably moved on to something new.  So think of those digital collections the same as VHS tapes that were thrown away after buying DVDs and Blu-Rays.

Or when a company like Vudu gets in financial trouble it will be bought out by Apple or Amazon, that's usually the way things go these days, so your collection might simply transfer to another service.

I've used Vudu mostly for rentals, they do 3D streaming well, although I did use their DVD upgrade service when they were offering deals if you did blocks of 10, I think it ended up being something like $2 each to upgrade (if their program recognized the disc) and own an HD streaming version of the movie.

So far the only things I've ever picked up on Vudu or Ultraviolet was using up vouchers for free movies stuck to DVDs. The last one I got, WrestleMania IV, which I got after buying the DVD for WrestleMania III, both of which became pretty much meaningless now that I get WWE Network.

The DVD did have a fun pop-up video version of the event on disc 2 though.

I assume it's not a plug, but a cog or a piston.

And mumbling to myself "It is by will alone I set my mind in motion. It is by the juice of Sapho that thoughts acquire speed, the lips acquire stains, stains become a warning. It is by will alone I set my mind in motion." while looking cross-eyed  :speechless:

If there are rumblings, download and install all the games in your library, and never delete them.

The scarier thing, in my opinion, is when steam loses the right to an individual game and you never know about it until you try and play it. Rarely happens, but it has.

Don't know if they make the hard drive that can handle my library. I'm a sucker for bundles...
