Actually can we do a chart now for Des a bit like the one recently done for the screen times of all the Doctors?

If I don't care about something, why would I wave my hands in the air about it?

Xia Li or similar.

My friend Jenny has that name because it's a close enough approximation of her actual name.

If you're a native Chinese speaker whose "l" and "r" distinctions aren't very good, why would you pick "Shirley" as your American name?

Because you have barrs.

A friend of mine is dating an immigrant from China.  She also chose Jenny as her English name.  I wonder if it's for the same reason.  That's an interesting point, Tripe!

I have to consciously not wince when she introduces herself. She sounds like Michael Scott doing a racist caricature.

I know some native Japanese.  They have the same issue with l and r.  I know neither sound is truly natural for them.  But, I don't understand why they can't remember the difference.  I explained to one friend, "L" is pronounced "el" an L sound. "R" is pronounced "arr," the R sound.  She understood perfectly.

Later, she told me  that over the weekend she intended to "go to the liver and catch some fresh, rive fish."

I have trouble pronouncing their version of the l/r sound.
Can you speak her language?   Does she speak Mandarin?

The Japanese "R" sound is more like a D sound. Put the tip of your tongue at the back of your hard palate and vocalize an "R" sound while dropping your tongue.

Dou itashimashite!

Whoa!  Arigatou gozaimashita! Exactly!  I read somewhere, that's it's "70% D, 20% R and 10% L.  I can do it ok, with sounds like "ryu." But, I have trouble with the shorter sounds, such as seals "Ru."

You speak Japanese?

I see.  I haven't had the pleasure, yet.  But, have studied for a couple years, because of my love of anime,  Jpop and Vocaloids.
