Man, Death Wish marathons are exhausting.

Seriously Paul, just stay away from people already!

Well, I learned my lesson.  I'm not posting anything news or politically themed on my facebook ever again.  Gonna stick to the games, and cutesy pics.

People are so damned touchy.

So you know how people can have panic attacks, is there a similar phenomenon whereby people just feel incredibly lonely for no real reason?

Yes, of course it is. It is a symptom of my particular disorder. Not sure why you think there was no real reason for it. People can feel lonely no matter what is happening.

"No real reason for it" = without obviously discernible situational trigger.

I'm asking about myself so I'll describe the situation as I see fit.

No one said you couldn't, jeez

I get emotions and thoughts in my head without a situational trigger too. That being said, to me felling lonely is terrible and It must have sucked to feel that no matter what the situation.

I don't know if depression would be the right word to use in your situation, but here is a thread about a similar topic at depressionforums.org.  A "lonely attack" is certainly not unheard of.  I don't know how often it happens, but some of the advice for dealing with them includes switching on the TV or going out with friends to a social environment (out to dinner or a sporting event).

Funny this should come up.

I go in to the doctor tomorrow to evaluate how well the Zoloft (I always think of "The Blood Waters of Dr. Z" when I say that) and the Hydroxyzine are working for my anxiety attacks. The short answer is: pretty well. Overall, I don't freak out over minor issues. I suspect the Zoloft is the main contributor to this. The Hydroxyzine puts me in zombie mode. I just take half pills of those when I'm having a bad day.

Heck, the fact I'm not pacing back and forth pulling my hair out over leaving the house tomorrow must mean something is helping.

Yes.  [Since I'm only just barely recovering from sequential things starting back on Mother's Day (that's when the retina started to detach), I'll hopefully keep it brief.]

The quick answer is yes, there can be bouts of, well, just about any emotion without noticeable triggers.  They may be more likely with triggers, but it's possible otherwise.

Just as one's mind wanders with what we normally think of as cognitions (thinking about stuff that uses language as its mediator, remembering events out of the blue), the mind can also wander through emotions.  Stronger or more repeated cognitions or emotions are more common to remember, but it is also possible to remember things that just were intense at one specific point, intense enough to make a lasting impact.

Having certain emotional memories out of context [with no discernable cause or related word-based cognition] can lead to some depressions and panic attacks.  Because they are out of context more attention is paid to them, concern generates about them, and they get worse/more intense because the emotional-memory pathways are strengthened by the attentional focus.

There's also the possibility that there was a minor trigger for such an emotion, but so minor - or seemingly unrelated - that it wasn't possible to connect the two.  [They may just share a similar/parallel pathway in the storage/retrieval areas of the brain.]

Hope that helps.
