The other day at school, I heard some student complaining that their professor wasn't letting them have their phones out in class, because they're adults and they use it at work all the time. Dude, they're just trying to keep you from wasting several hundred dollars. Not to mention it's Hella rude when they're actually putting effort into a lesson that they're passionate about, and you're sitting there scrolling on Instagram or whatever the kids use these days.

Astrology isn't the worst thing, as long as you understand that it's more of a concept art of your life than a finished product. Some friends of mine helped me do my birth chart, and I get that a lot of the answers are vague because they're only as meaningful as the connections you give them, but it's still kinda like "You don't know me, planets and stars." And I could see more connections to myself in MY chart when compared to my fiancee's. I certainly don't believe that the planets and the stars have intimate knowledge about my life, but it doesn't mean that it can't be beneficial to look at what is supposed to be a breakdown of my general character traits.

Oh, I got a tarot reading the other day, too, and that was also really cool. I'm not converted to the whole spirituality mysticism kind of thing, but it's a great way to get you to examine yourself and your life to see things that might have affected you in some way.

I mean, it's pretty fucking stupid.  The only influence distant stars have on my life is a minor gravitational one.

Yeah that ever so slight 'tug' on my equilibrium makes me see stars sometimes :P

I like astrology and tarot.  Not because I think there is any magic behind what they do, it's definitely all a scam.  But there is an art to the scam that I find impressive, and I agree that it can also be useful sometimes.  It's all about reading people and what they want to hear, and boosting self esteem.  Sure they are also scamming people out of money and taking advantage of those who aren't as intelligent or discerning, but they can also get people to look a their lives in a different way.  Any big connection or realization comes from the customer anyway.  The good mystic just makes you think it came from their magic powers.  So really it's just guided self examination.

Exactly, it's a great way to get you to look at yourself and see positive things AND things you can improve on. It's not much different than taking a self inventory, and if you do believe in that kind of thing, sure. It's a way to get more people to critically examine themselves, and that's a positive thing, in my opinion. I think another similar kind of thing would be the Meyer's Briggs test, which is widely discredited by psychologists today, but people still use it and look up people who share their traits. Guided examination.

Astrology is still a scam and the reader is taking advantage of people that are hurting and searching for answers.  Sure, some people do it for occasional fun, like going to a casino, but there are plenty of people that get addicted and waste lots of money on it.

This starts to take the conversation to a different thread, but how is that any different than religion?

The obvious answer is that people can walk into a church/mosque/synagogue for free, they don't have to make a donation if they don't want to.  I guess there are some that make people pay to get in, but there are plenty that are open to all.

So I'll stick with the casino/gambling analogy.

You legit can look up anything to do with astrology for free if you have access to the internet, which anyone with access to a library has these days. Tarot is as simple as having a deck and the means to interpret it, which isn't difficult to come by, either, since you can get them online for about 20 bucks. You don't need to go to a mystic or anything.

Anyone can play casino games at home for fun/free, or do their religion at home without going anywhere, so the analogy still holds.  Spending a little once in a while is fine, but just know that who ever you give money to is also taking money from those that are addicted to it.

Not sure where to put this. I was just thinking about these bizarre Robocop KFC ads. This sounds like something they would have had him do in Robocop 3. Which is part of the reason Robocop 3 sucked.
