Cavemen (ABC)
« on: October 24, 2007, 10:46:08 AM »
This show has been maligned since it's pilot was screened for the critics. In response to the criticism, they re-shot the pilot, did some re-writing, threw in a few scenes with one of the "real" cavemen from the commercials (the original actors were not available at the time), and toned down some of the "obvious" racial comparisons (e.g. in the original, the cavemen referred to themselves as Maggers, as in Cro-Magnon, were very talented athletically and posessed great rhythm).

Having said all that, and knowing how people love to predict failure, I will boldly predict that this show will be a hit. It's the new Seinfeld, a show about nothing, with a goofy twist (which btw you completely forget about after a while). Have you ever seen Seinfeld's pilot? It wasn't all that funny. It takes time for character development, etc, but it looks to me like Cavemen is right on track. The writing is very good, the one character (Nick) is perfectly played, the other two... well they havn't found much of an identity yet... but no doubt they will. The occasional scenes with the caveman from the commercials are a treat, even if it is obvious that they were thrown in after the fact.

I like these guys! Anybody agree?

I'm actually regretting that I missed the pilot. I've heard it was funny from several people.

I watched the re-shot pilot episode, the second episode, and most of last night's episode. I have to say it's just not all that funny. Sure, many hit TV shows start off as not all that good, but this one just doesn't have good enough writing or story situations to keep me interested. Though I absolutely LOVE the squash scenes with the dude from the caveman commercials, and I think they are the funniest scenes. I hope they never get rid of that guy.

I think the show has promise, but they really need to up the humor ante if they are going to stay afloat.

Anybody else see a Seinfeld-esque quality to this show?

Another thing that appeals to me about it is no laugh track... but I'm a fan of dry humor.

I thought the first episode (the pilot, i guess) wasn't funny or interesting and the second episode wasn't much better. However, I really enjoyed the third episode and the fourth episode was pretty descent, too.

I missed the "Seinfeld quality", but I think you're right. I suspect that's their template for the show (i.e., it was intentional). They even had a "Yogurt Nazi" episode, LOL!

well of course you liked it, you're eegah!   ;D

I agree that the first and second ones were not as good... all that character development slows down the laughs... but it's definitely getting there!

I thought the original pilot was funny. I caught ten minutes of last nights episode and was laughing my ass off. I absolutely don't understand the hate for this show.

Meh.  I didn't like it.  Aliens in America is fantastic, though.

You don't understand the hate for a show which began as a COMMERCIAL?

That doesn't just flabbergast you? It doesn't make you seethe with bile and rage?

Huh. What's that like?

Haha, well I DO have a four year degree in Advertising, so I suppose things like product placement and such don't phase me unless they are done poorly. In this case it wasn't.

Actually, I tend to agree. I go to great lengths to filter my internet experience down to the bare core of what I actually WANT to see. Unfortunately, short of illegal activities, that is not possible with television, because we don't have anything even remotely like TiVo in Canada, so I can't record shows and automatically filter out the ads. Mute with closed captioning turned off works nicely for that, though.

I haven't seen this show yet (the time it comes on is weird up here, and interferes with more important real life stuff), but I gather that the show is not exactly a Geico commercial extended to 22 minutes... it's more of a show based on a concept, which just happens to have been a commercial. It's not like a show that was designed SPECIFICALLY to sell products (such as, for example, ANY kids cartoon from 1980 - present). ;)

Yes, but it works on stupid people, and there's a hell of a lot more of them than there are of us, so it's not going to go away.

My general snarkiness aside, I actually take a pretty zen approach to life, in that I don't bother wasting anger or energy on something that's unchangeable. I instead devote my time and energy to what I *can* change (for the purposes of this commercial conversation, things like minimizing my exposure, and teaching myself to ignore the adverts that can't be avoided), which is more productive, and less stressful. Stress is the real killer - if you can master stress in its various incarnations, your life in general is much, much richer.

Aiiii!

I really, really LOATHE advertising. No offense, and I know it's your job, but...I try to just steer clear of it altogether. I don't listen to commercial radio; I don't watch commercial TV; I don't read magazines with commercials, and I have adblocker on all my webpages.

I honestly don't know how people stand the nearly-constant and INANE babbling that comes from commercials; I find it physically nauseating and so maddening that I can't sit still and watch. I hate them so much.

The worst part is the fucking ads in the movie theaters, where I have ALREADY PAID TO SEE THE FUCKING MOVIE and they still show me these vapid commercials.

STOP IT, you FUCKERS.

(there. Now who had me as the 'next to snap'?)

Well I don't work in advertising YET. I graduated last Fall but haven't interviewed for AD jobs yet... either I'm lazy, dont want to relocate, or the thought of being in an office sounds unappealing ... all are excuses I use lol. Currently work at a liquor store but I'm interviewing for better paying job tomorrow. Basically I skip jobs a lot (one job gets too boring.)

Anyway, about your 'hate' for advertising - many people feel that way! Thats why ads are getting more creative, its getting harder to reach the jaded consumer.

Ah, well, see, that's your REAL problem. Never let a woman control the remote. :D

Seriously, take that thing from her, even if she's the only one watching. Then you can at least mute the commercials. ;)

So, between a cute lizard, a hot cartoon spy, and some depressing cavemen, they chose THAT for a TV show?

Man am I glad I stopped watching TV five years ago.
